On Thursday, two 13SCI classes of geologists went on a trip to Maori Bay at Muriwai. Geologists search for clues hidden in the rocks to solve very complicated puzzles. Students identified different rock layers and interpreted trace fossils left behind by ancient worms living on the ocean floor. The pillow lavas present also gave evidence for a large offshore volcano some 20-15 million years ago. Students greatly enjoyed the challenge of carrying out research in the hope of placing the final pieces of the puzzle together.

COLLEGE ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS THURSDAY 21 FEBRUARY
The Avondale College Athletics Championships are taking place tomorrow, Thursday 21 February from 9:00am at Mount Smart Stadium, Penrose. This day is intended for students who qualified for events from the Whole School Athletics Sports Day. Names of students who have qualified are on the noticeboard outside the Sports Office. Students are to meet at the Halberg Stadium at 8am for a roll call. Buses will depart at 8.10am. Students will race in their age groups on the day. 2019 SWIMMING GALA WEDNESDAY 6 MARCH The Avondale College Swimming Gala is taking place on Wednesday 6 March from 9.30am-2.30pm at West Wave Pool in Henderson. Permission letters can be collected from the Sports Office. Signed permission slips are due back by Friday 1 March. Buses will transport participants to the pool from Avondale College at 8.30am. Boys and girls will race in separate events, with championship races being run by age group and non-championship races by year level. Parents are more than welcome to join us for the day. NEW 191 BUS SERVICE
WHANAU BBQ Friends and families enjoyed a time of food and connection in the sunshine at the Whanau BBQ yesterday evening. Thanks to all who came along; we look forward to spending more time together as the year progresses!
From Sunday 24 February 2019, the new 191 bus service replaces the current bus service 107 (New Lynn – Rosebank Peninsula – Avondale – Blockhouse Bay – New Lynn one-way loop). The 191 will run between Lynfield and New Lynn in both directions. The service will provide a direct link between Lynfield and Blockhouse Bay and also introduces service to the new Murray Halberg Retirement Village in Lynfield. It replaces one-way service with two-way service on Whitney Street and replaces one-way service with two-way service between New Lynn, Rosebank Peninsula and Avondale as well as providing better connections to Western Line trains. Trips will depart New Lynn hourly from 6:20am to 7:20pm, seven days a week and depart Lynfield hourly from 6:20am to 7:20pm, seven days a week. The service no longer travels on Wairau Avenue, customers currently using the 107 to/from Wairau Avenue will need to use new bus stops on Riversdale Road or Ash Street. Customers travelling to/from Taylor Street and Wolverton Street will need to use a 24B, 24R, or 68.

TAUREWA ADULT HELPERS NEEDED! We would like to draw your attention to an exciting opportunity to work with our students at our school camp, Taurewa, which is located beside the Tongariro National Park. Adult helpers are vital to the success of our Taurewa Camps, and we are currently looking for some more volunteers for upcoming trips! A reasonable level of fitness is required but no experience in the activities is necessary. Each camp is five days long and includes the following activities based around Tongariro National Park: • Year 10s: Kayaking, day tramps, hot pools, low ropes course and more! • Year 12s: Mountain biking, rock climbing (indoors), overnight tramping, low ropes course and more! • Year 13s: Overnight tramping, white water rafting, low ropes course and more! All trip costs are covered and adults can hire any clothing or equipment from the Taurewa Office at no cost. Adult helpers need to be over 21 years of age, and willing to complete a police check. On Saturday 16th February the 1st XI Boys put in a great performance against Kristin. Special mention needs to be made of Nathan Powell, who brought us right back into the game with 60 runs when we were 96/7. However, the run chase came up short and our boys lost in the last over. This was a tough loss but an outstanding performance nevertheless. The Year 9 Boys came up short against St Peters, unable to chase down their 138 runs. The Senior Mixed team had a tough loss in a very close game, losing 3-2 to St Peter’s.

Maceo Tremlett competed on Saturday 16th February in the Under 17 Single Division 2, and earned himself a gold medal. This was another great performance from him!

On Thursday 14th February, our Premier Boys defeated Waitakere College 2-1, before coming up short against a tough Auckland Grammar side, 2-0. Our Senior Girls put in two great performances, defeating Auckland Grammar and Waitakere College 2-0 and 2-1 respectively. Our Premier Boys went down to Westlake BHS and Manurewa, 3-0 in both games.

On Saturday 16th September Mihir Patil and Joshua De Zoysa were awarded their baggy caps for representing the 1st XI Cricket team. These are awarded to players who have managed to play 20 full first team games for the team. It is a significant achievement for these two young men as they have been in the 1st XI since Year 9. We wish them all the best for the upcoming season.

TAUREWA CAMP Whether kayaking down a river, tramping in the Tongariro National Park or cooking a massive chocolate self-saucing pudding, Taurewa trips are an action-packed week full of highlights! Taurewa is Avondale College's very own campsite in the central North Island, where students can spend time experiencing a variety of activities and challenges in the great outdoors. Activities around camp include a low ropes course, a walk through the local stream, and the Fairy Falls walk where students have the opportunity to stand behind a waterfall. Other activities include kayaking at Tokaanu, walking the Taranaki Falls track in the Tongariro National Park and circumnavigating Lake Rotopounamu. For senior students, the overnight tramp is always a highlight! All Year 10, Year 12, Year 13 and International students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp. We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa Camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure. Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to remind their parents when they know their camp is coming up!
