There will also be an opportunity to meet the Principal, Deans and your child’s home room teacher.

CAMBRIDGE INTERNATIONAL LEARNER AWARD Congratulations to Jesslyn Chen, who has gained a second Outstanding Cambridge Learner Award! Jesslyn (who was in Year 13 last year) has gained a High Achievement award after achieving the top mark in New Zealand in AS History. She will be presented with this award at a special ceremony in February. In 2018, Jesslyn also received this award for AS Psychology! Congratulations to Jesslyn, and her history teacher, Ms Fraser.

JOIN IN @AVCOL Budding Shakespearean actors, debaters, gardeners, indoor bowlers, musicians, dancers and more all had the chance to find their niche at the Join in @ Avcol event held in the Atrium at lunchtime today.

Hundreds of students took the opportunity to find out more about the many activities on offer here at Avondale, and with more than 57 stalls (not including all the many sports groups!) there was something to appeal to everyone.

Students should keep an eye on the Daily Notices for more information about the groups they have signed up for.

WHOLE SCHOOL ATHLETICS DAY FRIDAY 8TH FEBRUARY The Avondale College Athletics Day is a great day on the school calendar and offers all students a chance to participate. It also doubles as the first part of the Avondale College Athletics Championships. Athletes who throw or jump past the set standard will qualify for the Championship Athletics Day to be held on Thursday 21 February at Mt Smart Stadium.

All students need to bring a packed lunch, water bottle and sunscreen. Junior students can come to school wearing their PE gear; Years 11 and 12 should wear PE uniform or black and white sporting gear.

Should the day be postponed due to weather, an announcement will be posted on our school website www.avcol.school.nz.

AVONDALE COLLEGE SWIMMING GALA Wednesday 6 March Students can register in the Sports Department for the Avondale College Swimming Gala held at the West Wave Aquatic Centre.

Registrations are due by Friday 1 March.

We will be holding competitive and non-competitive races as well as our annual homeroom relays. Students who meet set standards for the competitive races will qualify to compete in the Central Western Zone Competition held on Monday 18 March.

ABSENCES Parents/Caregivers must notify the College by 9.30am each day if their child is away. You can do this in several ways: a) Send a notification via Family Connection (preferred) • Log in to Family Connection • Select ‘Available E-Forms’ (at top left) • Click on Absence Notification • Fill out the details, save and submit.

You will receive a confirmatory email once the notification is approved. This replaces the need to supply an absence note to the home room teacher. b) Email the Attendance Officer: absences@avcol.school.nz. Please include your child’s full name, home room class and the reason for the absence. c) Phone the Absence Line: (09) 820 1071 Students are required to provide a written note for all absences, even after the school has been Roberta Peteru notified by phone. This note must be brought on Attendance Officer the first day of attendance after the absence and given to the home room teacher.

Parents will receive a text from the school if their child is absent from home room without explanation.

Students must have a note from home if they are signing out of the College.

MUSIC GROUPS

MUSIC LESSONS Students at Avondale College are fortunate to have the opportunity to receive tuition in a wide range of instruments, free of charge.

Lessons are held in small groups, and are available in flute, clarinet, saxophone, oboe, bassoon, trumpet, trombone, French horn, tuba, violin, viola, cello, double bass, popular and jazz guitar, classical guitar, bass guitar, drums, percussion, vocals (singing) and keyboard. There are also a limited number of individual lessons available on piano and students who have already learnt piano may apply for jazz piano.

The teachers are paid by the Ministry of Education and Avondale College provides sheet music without charge. Avondale College has a number of instruments available for hire at less than commercial rates, but once these are all in use students must hire or buy their own instrument.

To find out more, students should fill out the yellow form (available from the Music Department) and deliver the signed form to Mr Stenbo at the Music Department on Thursday 7 February. Once lessons are full, students will have to go on waiting lists.

MUSIC CO-CURRICULAR GROUPS Rehearsals for co-curricular music groups start in Week 3. Students who already play in a music group, or who would like to join one should check out the rehearsal times listed in the Music Department.

Groups include: Symphony Orchestra, String Ensemble, Taikaka Orchestra (all-comers band), Big Band, Jazz Combos, Soul Band, Choir, Vocal Ensemble, Rock Bands.

The Avondale College Performing Arts Academy will be starting on Monday 11 February (Week 3, Day 6) for students who successfully auditioned and have been accepted into the Academy programme. The initial session starts in the Performing Arts Centre at 7:45am.

TAUREWA CAMP Whether kayaking down a river, tramping in the Tongariro National Park or cooking a massive chocolate self-saucing pudding, Taurewa trips are an action-packed week full of highlights!

Taurewa is Avondale College's very own campsite in the central North Island, where students can spend time experiencing a variety of activities and challenges in the great outdoors.

Activities around camp include a low ropes course, a walk through the local stream, and the Fairy Falls walk where students have the opportunity to stand behind a waterfall. Other activities include kayaking at Tokaanu, walking the Taranaki Falls track in the Tongariro National Park and circumnavigating Lake Rotopounamu. For senior students, the overnight tramp is always a highlight!

All Year 10, Year 12, Year 13 and International students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp.

We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa Camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure.

Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to remind their parents when they know their camp is coming up!
