Heartbeat 2019 Term 1 Week 11

B NATIONAL YOUTH JAZZ COMPETITION The 42nd National Youth Jazz Competition took place at the Baycourt Theatre in Tauranga from Thursday to Saturday last week, showcasing the best up-andcoming jazz musicians in New Zealand secondary schools. Avondale College was the most highly represented school at the competition, with 44 students in six different performance groups!

Avondale students performed in four different combo groups on the smaller 'X Space' stage, with the Big Band and Stage Band playing in the larger Addison Theatre. As in previous years, one of the highlights of the trip for all involved was the Tauranga Farmers' Market gig, where our students played over three hours in the sunshine, much to the delight of the stallholders and crowd.

At the Saturday afternoon prizegiving, all six of our groups were recognised with performance awards: Avondale College Quartet - Gold Award Blue Note Combo - Silver Award Five Spot Combo - Silver Award Avondale College Big Band - Silver Award Avondale College Stage Band - Silver Award 52nd Street Combo - Bronze Award Congratulations to all our dedicated Music Department staff and students who have worked so hard in the months leading up to the festival; they have achieved an outstanding level of performance!

Avondale College celebrated the success of some of our top students at the Honours Assembly on Monday. Students were recognised for their achievement at local, regional, national and international levels across a range of sporting, cultural and academic activities.

Y13 PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION A fascinating exhibition of cultural portraits has been on display in the Art Department this week.

Level 3 Photography students were given the task of selecting a culture that is close to their personal lives and interests, and creating photographs and statements to reflect this.

The artwork created through this process was both thought-provoking and moving, and staff and students have appreciated the opportunity to engage with this exhibition this week.

NORTH PIHA BEACH CLEAN-UP On a sunny day on the last Sunday of Term 1, 16 students and teachers met at North Piha car park for three hours of rubbish collecting. The beach itself was surprisingly quite clear of rubbish, probably helped by the steady wind that was blowing. However, the story was different in the dunes. Eighty kilograms of rubbish was collected in total, most of it being bottles and cans. Hats off to the students who often crawled under trees to collect the last illusive bottle - I don't think much rubbish missed the eagle eyes of our group! Fortunately, most of the rubbish collected was recyclable and could be put in the correct place. The bed mattress though, the council will be getting a call to collect that!

SCHOOL SHOW 2019 Avondale College is excited to announce our stage show for 2019: In the Heights!

In The Heights is a vibrant, life-affirming Broadway musical built on the infectious Latin rhythms of salsa and merengue alongside soul, pop, hip-hop and R&B. ​Set in a Latin neighbourhood of Manhattan, In The Heights is an award-winning show created

by Lin-Manuel Miranda (behind the Pulitzer, Grammy and Tony Award winning sensation Hamilton). ​ ​Winner of the 2008 Tony Award for Best Musical, In the Heights is the story of three days in the life of Washington Heights, a tightknit community on the northern tip of Manhattan.

At the centre of the show is Usnavi, a bodega owner who looks after the aging Cuban lady next door, pines for the gorgeous girl working in the neighbouring beauty salon and dreams of winning the lottery and escaping to the shores of his native Dominican Republic.

Meanwhile, Nina, a childhood friend of Usnavi’s, has returned to the neighbourhood from her first year at college with surprising news for her parents, who have spent their life savings on building a better life for their daughter.

Ultimately, Usnavi and the residents of the close-knit neighbourhood get a dose of what it means to be home.

Students who are interested in auditioning for the show will be able to sign up next term.

Auditions will be held on 3 May. The show will run in the Avondale College Theatre from 16 - 21 September.

ATHLETICS

NORTH ISLAND SECONDARY SCHOOLS ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIP 6-7 April 2019 Tauranga Stadium After the CSA Athletics Championships at Mt Smart, qualifiers had the option of putting in their own nomination forms for the North Island Secondary Schools Championships held at Tauranga. A huge Auckland team saw 115 athletes pooled from the Central-West Zones and Central-East Zones. A solid group of nine Avondale College athletes attended the competition over the two days.

Outstanding performances came from Le’Oxeayn Maiu’u, who competed in no less than five events. She placed 1st in the North Island for her 300m sprint, and 2nd in her 300m Hurdles, which is an U16 event – Le’Oxyean is still only 13. Le’Oxeayn also jumped into the 4x100m relay team for the Junior Girls and placed 2nd overall, with the Counties Manukau team just pipping them at the post.

Blessing Sefo showed a solid performance taking 2nd in the Junior Boys Shot Put and 3rd for the Junior Boys Discus.

Zaccheaus Saluni also gave a strong performance in shot put, placing 6th in the North Island.

Tremayne Redman-Gardner competed well in his High Jump, with a clearance of 1.85m (personal best) placing 5th in the North Island based on count-back. He also ran the 100m Hurdles, making it to the finals and then placing 7th overall.

The middle distance team did a superb job, with both Kimberley May and Joanna Poland vying for placing in the 800m and 1500m. Both girls battled it out in the two events, with Kimberley placing 4th in both events, and Joanna placing 2nd in the 1500m and 5th in the 800m. Both girls were involved in the 4x400m relays (Joanna in the U16 team and Kimberley in the U18 team). The U16 team placed first overall, and the U18 team 6th. Henry Greaves also competed in the U16 2000m Steeplechase and gave a top performance for a newcomer to the event, placing 9th overall.

Lex Revell-Lewis ran his final 400m for the athletics season, securing a personal best time of 53.30s, and placing 5th overall for the Intermediate boy’s grade. He was also part of the U16 4x400m relay team who ran a blistering 3:32.47min, which broke the current record. The boys showed incredible speed and precision through all changes and transitions.

Elleazry Maiu’u, older sister to Le’Oxeayn, showed strong form in her 200m heat, however did not quite qualify for the finals.

She was also part of the 4x100m relay team who placed 2nd overall.

It was a very successful weekend of athletics for the small group in attendance. The next major event on the horizon for the athletics group will be the NZ Secondary Schools Championships to be held in Wellington in December. Our athletes will need all of the off-season to prepare for the incredibly strong calibre of competition and the high standard that is expected in the individual events.

We would also like to say a big thank you to all the staff and parents who have supported our students and our sport throughout the entire season.

BADMINTON

Misha Lingampalli competed in the U17 Auckland Open and won the title for Singles and Women’s Doubles. She also placed 2nd in the XD Doubles. As a result of these performances, Misha has been selected to play in the Auckland U17 team, the U17 Gold Squad and the U19 Silver Squad.

DIVING

Javiyah Nikoia won three Bronze Medals at the Diving New Zealand Nationals over the weekend. These events were the Group A Boys 3m Springboard, the Group A Boys 1m Springboard and the Synchronised Junior Elite Group A/B Boys.

FOOTBALL

Our 1st XI Boys had a tough start to their season, losing 5-2 at home to Mt Roskill in the first leg of their promotion/relegation game. These teams will face off again on Thursday 11th April at Mount Roskill Grammar.

ORIENTEERING

Liam Stolberger dominated the Auckland Secondary Schools Orienteering competition, winning the Senior Boys Sprint Final which took place on Sunday. Liam has been winning each week in

the Central West competition, and to then take out the Auckland wide competition is a big achievement against some top sporting schools.

RUGBY

Our 1st XV Boys opened up their pre-season with a tough 10-8 loss to Waitakere College.

SWIMMING

On Wednesday 3rd April, Ikko Shibuya came away with two Silver Medals at the Auckland Swimming Champion of Champions in both the Freestyle and Butterfly strokes.

TABLE TENNIS

TAG FOOTBALL

Our Senior Girls played in the Senior Central North Western Zone at Moire Park. We made the final but unfortunately came away with 2nd place. The girls have qualified for the Auckland Championships which will take place on April 10th.

TAUREWA CAMP Whether kayaking down a river, tramping in the Tongariro National Park or cooking a massive chocolate self-saucing pudding, Taurewa trips are an action-packed week full of highlights!

Taurewa is Avondale College's very own campsite in the central North Island, where students can spend time experiencing a variety of activities and challenges in the great outdoors.

Activities around camp include a low ropes course, a walk through the local stream, and the Fairy Falls walk where students have the opportunity to stand behind a waterfall. Other activities include kayaking at Tokaanu, walking the Taranaki Falls track in the Tongariro National Park and circumnavigating Lake Rotopounamu. For senior students, the overnight tramp is always a highlight!

All Year 10, Year 12, Year 13 and International students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp.

We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa Camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure.

Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to remind their parents when they know their camp is coming up!

TAUREWA ADULT HELPERS NEEDED! We would like to draw your attention to an exciting opportunity to work with our students at our school camp, Taurewa, which is located beside the Tongariro National Park. Adult helpers are vital to the success of our Taurewa Camps, and we are currently looking for some more volunteers for upcoming trips! A reasonable level of fitness is required but no experience in the activities is necessary.

Each camp is five days long and includes the following activities based around Tongariro National Park: • Year 10s: Kayaking, day tramps, hot pools, low ropes course and more!

• Year 12s: Mountain biking, rock climbing (indoors), overnight tramping, low ropes course and more!

• Year 13s: Overnight tramping, white water rafting, low ropes course and more!

All trip costs are covered and adults can hire any clothing or equipment from the Taurewa Office at no cost.

Adult helpers need to be over 21 years of age, and willing to complete a police check.
