B JUNIOR LITERACY AWARDS The English Department's annual Literacy Awards ceremony was held in the library on Wednesday. One student from each junior English and Media Studies' class is nominated by their English teacher for showing tenacity in literacy. This means that they have been persistent and determined to improve their reading and writing and English skills, even when faced with challenges. The award winners have shown personal endeavour in applying themselves to their studies throughout the year, making their English teachers very proud.

Parents, students and English teachers filled the library, and Mrs Cope and Ms Joynes handed out the awards and book prizes. Mr Duckor-Jones read some of his recently published novel, Swim, and talked about the real life value of tenacity, and Ms Medland read some beautiful poems about the seasons, written by her Year 9 English class, 9LTN. The evening was a wonderful celebration for the English Department, and endorsed the words of the writer Gary Paulsen - "I owe everything I am and everything I will be to books." GRAD DINNER The Avondale College Grad Dinner held at Alexandra Park was a fantastic night, with our Year 13 graduates and staff dining and dancing the night away. ATHLETICS REPORT New Zealand Secondary Schools Nationals – Dunedin 2018 After many months of planning, fundraising, training and competing at the Athletics Auckland November meets, the team finally travelled down to Dunedin on Thursday morning. Fresh-eyed and full of hope, they shared their flight with many other Auckland Secondary School teams, which gave them a sense of what was to come.

The athletes kicked off their first day with Lex Revell-Lewis running in the Junior boys 400m, Jamie-Lee Clay in the 400m, and the 200m sprint girls running in heats as well.

The pool for these track events was huge, showcasing the very best emerging talent within the high school environment – and it was ample. Lex, Elleazyr Maiu’u and Elli Morris all made it through to the semi finals stage the following day. Maclani Michaels had her first event of the senior girls’ javelin and proved herself a worthy competitor, placing 8th overall in New Zealand. Not a bad effort! In the long jump pit, Joshua Saluni jumped 4.96m, which is a solid effort.

However, the field was very strong and a jump of 6m was required for reaching the long jump finals!

Joanna Poland had her first event for the competition on Friday afternoon – the Junior Girls 3000m. She was initially very

nervous and had set out a game plan of slotting herself within the pack and making a mad-sprint at the end. However, as it panned out, the pack was much too big for her to breathe so she stretched out her incredible legs and chose to lead the pack instead – keeping herself clear of any risk of falls or injury. She continued to lead the entire race – with two others following close by. By the time she heard the bell ring for her final lap, she stretched out her stride even more, obliterating the third runner behind her, who could not keep up with her pace. By the final 200m, Joanna had gained such a lead, she lapped the last few runners and completely opened up her lead with a blistering sprint finish. There was nothing her closest competitor could do to out-run her. Jo crossed the finish line with hands in the air – a true champion, and an absolutely wonderful and deserved outcome for an incredible young athlete.

Day 2 saw our senior discus and shot put star, Deja Rees, step up to the plate, and with high hopes she tried her best. However, battling the wind proved difficult for her and she placed within the top ten of both the senior girls’ shot put and discus events. The pools for the senior girls’ throws was large and certainly showcased an abundance of strong throwing talent in New Zealand; the future of this event looks to be in safe hands.

Lex also ran the heats of the 400m and after a solid attempt in his heat, he missed

out on a spot in the finals by one placing, resulting in a 9th in New Zealand overall finish. The hurdles trio of Joshua, Max van der Westhuizen and Tremayne RedmanGardner were also up in the morning on the junior boys’ 100m hurdles. Unfortunately, all three missed out on a spot in the semi finals.

Renee Fowler and Elli were also up in the morning for long jump. Both girls cleared well over 4.5m, but this was not near enough for a spot in the finals. Tremayne was up in the afternoon for his junior boys’ high jump, and proved himself to be a competitive jumper, clearing 1.80m to finalise his place as 4th overall in New Zealand. This was such a fantastic achievement and so very close to a medal. The senior 200m sprint girls completed their semi-finals in the afternoon and placed well within their heats. However, the competition was incredibly fierce and the girls missed out on a spot for the finals.

Day 3 saw Max back in action with the junior boys’ triple jump, but not quite gaining enough metres to make it to the top ten this time round. Lomanec Ianga was up with both his shot put and discus – and being a senior boy, he was up against the likes of Connor Bell – Youth Olympic Champion and Nikolas Kini – recent Polynesian Regional Champion. The talent across this group is world-class, but Lomanec kept his cool and aimed for PB’s instead. Faith Faumui also ran her junior girls’ 100m semi final and had a fantastic performance on the track, but this

was not quite enough to clinch a spot in the finals. The triple jump girls of Maclani, Elli and Grace Nweke were up and all three made a solid effort of the event. However, the competition proved too strong and the girls couldn’t quite make a top ten placing.

Grace and Renee were at senior girls’ high jump, with Grace clearing all her jumps without missing up to 1.63m, which is a personal best for her. She failed to clear the 1.66m, unfortunately, but was placed 7th overall for senior girls’ high jump – this being her first attempt within this age grade.

The last track events for the day, was Joanna Poland contesting the 2000m steeplechase – an event that is fairly new to her and she had only run in twice at the November meets in Auckland. With absolutely no expectation of where she would place, she just wanted to gauge her competition and do her best. Sure enough, Joanna absolutely blitzed the competition, leaping, running, sprinting and winning it! It was absolutely exhilarating to watch her go! A few of her competitors pulled out of the race, or came up injured. The steeple chase proves to be very challenging on young knees and hips.

It’s gruelling for the best of them.

Then finally we had the Senior Girls 4x100m relay consisting of Maclani, Renee, Elli and Elleazyr. A fantastic effort was given by these girls within a pool of 19 competitors. The girls came away with a commendable 11th placing. The girls know what they need to do for next year and are fired up for another shot in 2019.

ATHLETICS REPORT [CONT] The Junior boys’ 4x100m relay consisting of Lex Revell-Lewis, Max Van Der Westhuizen, Josh Saluni and Tremayne Redman-Gardner had great success. An original pool of 12 teams dropped down to 9 by day 2 – then at marshalling, the teams dropped down to 8, meaning the junior boys 4x100m went straight to finals. With a full line up of teams, including the big guns of relays (AGS, Kings, St Andrews), the boys went into this with a set goal – keep the relay clean, don’t drop the baton, transfer well and stay within the white lines and acceleration zones. And sure

enough, the race was exhilarating as each baton change saw one of the other teams fumble and fault, and at the final baton change from Max to Lex, Lex put the gas on and ensured his speed held his 4th placing across the line – a call from the announcer advised there was some issues with the relay and that he could not call the winners as yet until the photo finish team and track judges decided on the placings. After an agonising five minutes of deliberation, the announcer advised a disqualification of St Andrews College, leaving the placings as follows: Kings

College 1st, Auckland Grammar 2nd and - after an excruciating pause - announced Avondale College 3rd. As a team we roared and cheered, and I am certain this could be heard throughout Dunedin! This was a fantastic podium finish for the boys – a reallife David and Goliath story of some ordinary kids achieving great heights against major athletics schools.

A big thanks to the teachers involved: Mr Dewsnap and Dr Brown, and to associate staff member Roz Butler as well, for providing valuable support to our athletes. With such big athletics meets (and three of them of involved in their final NCEA exams on the morning of Day 1), the students can be located at various places at any given time as their events are individual (completely different to a soccer team, or hockey team where they all play at once). Logistically, it is challenging to ensure each athlete is at warmup in sufficient time, at marshalling when the call-room makes the announcement, and that they are supported at their individual event when in the field of play.

We look forward to Wellington 2019 with an even bigger, stronger athletics nationals team!

SPORTS REPORT Monday 19 November – Sunday 25 November

CRICKET

The 1st XI Boys played their final match of the Term 4 season on Saturday against Macleans College. This was the final game for many of our Year 13’s who have played for Avondale College for a number of years now. Avondale College starting out at batting, obtaining 107 runs all out. We then went out to bowl, getting them all out for 86 runs, winning by 21 runs. The final score: 107/10 to 86/10 to us.

What an outstanding finish to the season and a satisfying way to finish school cricket for our Year 13 veterans!

The Year 10 Boys side played a competitive Mt Albert Grammar Gold on Saturday. We were a little outmatched as we were defeated 183/5 to 93/8.

The Year 9 Boys game against Liston was cancelled due to bad weather.

Congratulations to all the players who made this year’s Avondale College cricket season a success. A big thank you to all staff, parents and coaches involved for all your time, service and effort.

EXCELLENCE AWARDS

A big congratulations to Percy Maka who recently attended the Honda NZ Counties Manukau Excellence Awards for 2018 and was selected as the category winner for the Junior Sportsman of the Year. Also, another congratulations on being selected as a part of the official opening of the Christmas Wonderland at the base of the Sky Tower.

Percy and his siblings were selected by children’s charity Variety to light up the Sky Tower for Christmas. He was selected based on his recent selection as a Variety Gold Heart Scholar for his outstanding achievements this year in shotput and discus. What a special acknowledgement, and well done, Percy!

BADMINTON

Misha Lingampalli has just been selected into the New Zealand U17 Badminton Team to compete in Napier in December and then a tour to Indonesia Jakarta to play in an Oceania Tournament in Term two in 2019.

OCEAN SWIM SERIES

Alex Dunkley took part in the first event of the Ocean Swim Series over the weekend.

Amidst challenging conditions in the Paihia to Russell 3.3km swim, he finished in 48.46 minutes, placing 4th in the 12-14 year old age group and 15th overall out of 543 swimmers.

Well done on your achievement, Alex, we look forward to seeing your progress in the next events!
