B TECHNOLOGY IN ACTION! Our junior students have been working on some great creative projects in their Technology option classes this term! Tasked with designing and building a portable speaker, our Year 10 Product Development students have come up with some very innovative designs, using laser cutting and 3D printing technology to execute them. Ms Macdonald's Soft Materials students are in the final stages of completing garments that they have designed and constructed themselves, and on the menu for yesterday's Food Technology lesson: chocolate tart!

BOT PARENT SURVEY New Zealand's secondary school education is facing some significant changes ahead, including widespread reviews of NCEA. The Avondale College Board of Trustees would like to gather feedback from our parents and caregivers on the NCEA and Cambridge International pathways available at the College.

A short survey will be emailed to parents tomorrow, which will enable Avondale College to plan ahead to continue to deliver a high standard of education that meets the changing needs of our students.

GARDEN CLUB Avondale College's Horticulture gardens are flourishing, thanks in part to the ongoing efforts of our amazing Garden Club! Each Wednesday lunchtime students have been meeting to plant, weed and care for two garden plots that are producing a range of vegetables such as broccoli, carrots, cabbages, leeks, silverbeet and kale.

Mr Norton and Mr Conti have led the group, showing students how to dig and cultivate the soil, apply the correct amount of fertiliser, hoe the weeds and deter pests such as snails. And the results are spectacular!

In addition to learning these vital skills, students are now enjoying taking home the results of their hard work.

COLLEGE SHOP THE COLLEGE SHOP IS OPEN MONDAY TO FRIDAY FROM 8.15am - 1.30pm, selling the Avondale College uniform for boys and girls, including socks and 50 Denier pantihose. The Avondale College uniform is only available from the School College Shop, which is located in the Atrium, beside Reception.

A layby service is available until the end of December (No layby in January). EFTPOS facilities are available (AMEX not accepted).

INTERNATIONAL ACTIVITY PROGRAMME For the past three weeks, the International students have been involved in an action packed activity programme, both in and out of school. The students really enjoyed a range of activities that they wouldn’t normally take part in back in their home countries.

A huge thank you to the International staff and teachers for organising such fun-filled last few weeks for our International students, many of whom will be travelling back home to join their families in their own countries very soon.

This has been a great way to finish their New Zealand experience. We wish all our International students a safe journey home and hope they have had a wonderful time with us here at Avondale College.

SPORTS REPORT Monday 19 November to Sunday 25 November

ATHLETICS

Round 4 of Athletics Auckland Secondary Schools Challenge Cup After four weeks of intense competition for our large team of dedicated athletes, we were delighted and proud to win the Secondary Schools Challenge Cup! Avondale College was presented with the trophy by Board Chair David Sim and Murray McKinnon, President of Athletics Auckland Inc, at the conclusion of Saturday’s meet.

What a moment for our athletes, and what a huge boost as we head into the national competition next week!

We would like to particularly thank the wonderful students who have been part of the Challenge Cup team who are not heading to Nationals with us this year: Aryan Walanj, Musa Kashif, Keon Hall, Hayley Greenhalgh, Rachel Dela Cruz, Angel-Aliska Taulapapa-Sopoaga and Elive Sopoaga. They enthusiastically took part in the Saturday sessions, and helped add more points to our tally than we could have done on our own. It is quite an intense series of meets for them to go into and we are grateful they had the

courage to join us. We look forward to having them on our Nationals team next year!

Looking ahead to Nationals In the final round of the Challenge Cup, our team had to face two of their biggest adversaries – wet weather and an early morning start! This was the perfect opportunity for the team to develop their resilience to both of these challenges ahead of Nationals!

Joanna Poland ran an absolutely incredible 2000m steeple chase, looking dominant in the group. She is in fantastic form for Nationals.

Tremayne Redman-Gardner also deserves a special mention for achieving a personal best in the long jump, of 5.63m! This is a fantastic result and clears the qualifying mark for Nationals – but unfortunately it is not one of his competition events, and it is too late to enter into it for this year. Nonetheless, we are confident he will do well in his favoured event, the high jump, next week!

Our relay team had a second run against a fiercely competitive AGS team who will be hard to beat at Nationals. However, the best thing about relays is you cannot ever pick a winner until the race is over – a dropped baton, a run on the white line, or a small

fumble with baton change can drop a team from first to last in a matter of seconds. The goal for both the Junior Boys and Senior Girls teams is to not get disqualified and let the results speak for themselves in the end. If the relay is kept clean, tidy and seamless, then the results may surprise us all. Both teams have good speed and good coordination and it will just be down to the finer details on race day.

Up next – Dunedin Nationals! Let’s go, team!

CRICKET

All cricket games were cancelled this week due to bad weather.

TOUCH

The Junior Boys played their final two games of the season on Tuesday 20 November. They played Waitakere College in their first game, with the winner going on to play Rutherford College for 7th place. Our boys rallied together and put on a great performance, defeating Waitakere, 6-0. We then went on to beat Rutherford in another convincing win, 4-1, ending the competition in 7th place.

Although it has been a tough season in the A grade, the boys have shown improvement and perseverance. What a great way to end the season, team!
