The talent of our junior students was on show last Wednesday evening, at the Performing Arts Academy's annual Showcase event. The 90 minute performance highlighted the work that has been done throughout the year in our early morning Music (Jazz and Classical), Dance and Drama Academy sessions. Students have been engaged in an extended programme of learning this year, and the confidence, communication and presentation skills that have been developed as a result were very evident on stage! Congratulations to all students and staff involved.

AVCOL STUDENTS SELECTED FOR NZ YOUTH PARLIAMENT

AUDITIONS 29 November 2018
Two Avondale College students will have an opportunity to see what it is like to run the country, after being selected as Youth Members of Parliament for the Youth Parliament programme for 2019. Nishita Ganatra in Year 10 and Dazhonavah Fa'amu in Year 11 have both been chosen for the programme, which involves a six month tenure period from March to August, and a two-day Youth Parliament event in July next year. The two Avondale students will find themselves on opposite sides of the bench, with Nishita representing Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi, the National List MP for Manukau East, and Dazhonavah representing Labour's MP for Kelston and Minister for Social Development and Disability Issues, Carmel Sepuloni. Nishita and Dazhonavah both say they are excited about taking part in the programme, and they are looking forward to finding out more about New w Zealand's government and parliament activities. "We're being equipped with an insight into New Zealand politics and are given the opportunity to voice the issues of the youth in our electorate," says w Dazhonavah. Parents/Caregivers must notify the College by 9.30am each day if their child is away. You can do this in several ways: a) Send a notification via Family Connection (preferred) • Log in to Family Connection • Select ‘Available E-Forms’ (at top left) • Click on Absence Notification • Fill out the details, save and submit. You will receive a confirmatory email once the notification is approved. This replaces the need to supply an absence note to the home room teacher. b) Email the Attendance Officer: absences@avcol.school.nz. Please include your child’s full name, home room class and the reason for the absence. c) Phone the Absence Line: (09) 820 1071 Students are required to provide a written note for all absences, even after the school has been notified by phone. This note must be brought on the first day of attendance after the absence and given to the home room teacher. Parents will receive a text from the school if their child is absent from home room without explanation.
Students must have a note from home if they are signing out of the College.
FAMILY CONNECTION The Avondale Family Connection allows families to have direct access, through the internet, to a wide range of information about their child’s academic performance, attendance, activities, events, trips, parent/ teacher interview appointments and teacher only days. The information provided includes: Class allocations, timetables, class teachers, NCEA and Cambridge results, attendance data, detention records and assessment reports. Former Avondale College student Ajaz Patel made an outstanding international debut for the Blackcaps this weekend, picking up five match-winning wickets in the opening match of the New Zealand vs Pakistan series!

ATHLETICS
Round 3 of Athletics Auckland Secondary Schools Challenge Cup. Saturday saw another great turn out for our College athletes in the third round of the Challenge Cup. The 200m was on the menu for most of the athletes and there was a fantastic turn out from other schools. It was great for the athletes to see someone such as Dominic Overend from Auckland Grammar School demonstrate how the big-guns run the 200m; inspirational viewing on the track. We had the two senior girls on the Triple Jump, Maclani Michael and Elli Morris, with Maclani clearing over the 10m mark, and Elli doing well to juggle not only the 200m but the triple jump simultaneously. Deja Rees and Lomanec Ianga were on the shot put along with Faith Faumui and Angel Taulapapa-Sopoaga. The four throw athletes did a great job. Deja had a slightly miscalculated throw which ended up spraining her finger joint. With less than two weeks to go on Nationals, the timing could not have been worse. However, we are thankful her injury was overcome quickly with ice and compression. At the end of the meet, the relay teams got to have a race – the Junior boys were two men down as both Max and Lex carried injuries from the 200m, so Aryan Walanj and Musa Kashif stepped up to the plate and filled in the relay gaps for us, which was brilliant. The senior girls in full force had their first timed race as a team, and managed a good time which they can then look to beat next week. With one more round to go, and creeping that much closer to nationals, the team is looking solid - not only in taking out the Challenge Cup, but going into nationals with confidence in their own abilities and in understanding the protocols around athletic meets.
200m Race
Our 1st XI Boys team played Selwyn College on Saturday 17 November. The team started out at batting and managed to secure a solid 206 runs at the end of all our overs, with still six wickets to spare. Selwyn then went out to bat, but we were too clinical and bowled them all out for 176 runs. Final score: 206/5 to 176/10 to us. Awesome job, boys! The 2nd XI Boys team played some very tough competition – Kings College 3XI, on Saturday. Kings batted first, scoring 172 runs after their 20 overs. We then came to the crease as we batted second, 172 runs to catch. With our top batsmen only managing to score 11 runs, we were outplayed by better competition. We were bowled out at 32 runs. Final score: 172/9 to 32/10 to Kings. The Year 10 Boys lost to Mt Albert Gold, 145/5 to 111/10. The Year 9 Boys team played St Peter’s Yellow in the weekend. St Peter’s batted first, scoring 79 runs at the end of their overs. We then went out to bat and within two wickets caught St Peter’s up, winning by eight wickets. Final score: 79/5 to 80/2 to us.
TOUCH
The Junior Touch Boys played three games last Tuesday afternoon against Dilworth A, St Paul’s, and Mt Albert. We didn’t win a game, but of the games that we played we managed to keep the score close against St Paul’s, only losing by two tries. The team will play their final games this week.
VOLLEYBALL
Our Junior A Girls Volleyball team competed at the Auckland Secondary Schools Junior Volleyball Championships from Thursday 15 November to Saturday 17 November. Our team was seeded 20th at the tournament, thus aligning ourselves in pool D with teams from Manurewa High School, Onewhero Area School, St Kentigern’s College and Mangere College. In our first game of the competition we played a competitive Manurewa side. We won the first set 25-13, but let our guard down as we went down by two points in the next two sets, losing 2-1 in a very close match. Following this defeat, our team mentally gathered themselves and was driven to put out a better effort. With this enthusiasm and focus our girls went on to defeat our next three competitors in 2-0 games. The games against Mangere and St Kentigern’s were both fought out to the very last point. Having been put in this situation before, we had experience and composure, thus being able to come out victors in both games. Day 1 saw some very good volleyball played by our girls.

Going into Day 2, we were hit with a major setback. The positions 1st, 2nd and 3rd in our pool were put in the hands of a countback due to a three way tie between us, Mangere and Manurewa. Due to a very unfortunate points countback, we were seeded third in the pool and placed in Division 2. For some teams this would have knocked their confidence, but it become motivation for our girls as we played every game with fight and vigour. Our girls went on a 5-0 run, beating teams such as Glendowie, Baradene, Kia Aroha, Waiuku and Sir Edmond Hillary. We ended the tournament in 17th place and were top of Division 2, proving that we had the potential and ability to be amongst those in Division 1. To end the tournament three places above our seeding and with eight wins and one very close loss was an achievement in itself. Congratulations, girls, on an awesome tournament and for sticking it out even with the obstacles you were faced with. Our Junior Boys Volleyball team also competed at the AKSS Junior Volleyball Championships. They were seeded 17th going into the tournament and were placed in Pool A with Rangitoto College (2018 Premier Season Division Winners) and Tangaroa College. Our team faced Rangitoto in the first match and due to a lack in experience and maturity fell short 2-0. This left the team in a very trying position. In order to qualify for the top eight, our boys had to beat their next three competitiors. To end Day 1 we played Tangaroa College, in a mustwin game. The loser of the game would be dropped into Division 2. Seeing the importance of the game, the match was neck and neck and taken down to the very last set. Avondale College came out on top, winning 2-1, placing us in 2nd in our pool and securing a spot in Division 1. Day 2 saw us play Sacred Heart and Mangere College, with the winner obtaining a position in the top eight. In our game against Sacred Heart, we controlled the first set but made a few errors down the stretch, putting us a few points behind to win the set. With composure and grit, our boys dug deep and won the first set. The second set was very similar to the first and as a result we came out on top again, winning the match 2-0. We then went on to beat Mangere College, putting us in contention for a semifinal position. The boys had proven so much already, but they weren’t stopping now. Manurewa was our next challenge, a very tough and experienced side. Manurewa secured the first set and the second set was taken down to the wire. Unfortunately, Manurewa got the better of us, claiming the last three points of the game, ending the game 2-0. Manurewa went on to win the tournament, whilst we fought it out for 5th to 8th place position. We won our final game of the tournament 2-0 against Otahuhu College, placing us 7th in the competition, claiming a spot in the Junior Premier Division in 2019. This was an impressive performance by the boys, shifting them up 10 places from their original 17th seed. Congratulations to the team and a special mention to Raymond Leota who led the team and gained himself a spot on the AKSS Junior Volleyball Championship Tournament Team - one of just fourteen players in the whole tournament. What an outstanding achievement! Avondale College was awarded the Wairua Cup at the Tournament, which is a true reflection of the character both teams portrayed. A big thank goes out to all parents and staff who helped in making this event a success. Congratulations to both teams on their achievements!

SPORT WAITAKERE EXECELLENCE AWARDS
Friday 16 November saw a number of Avondale College students attend the Sport Waitakere Excellence Awards dinner held at the Trust Arena, Henderson. Each student was nominated for the following categories: 1st XI Boys Hockey (Lewis Rose) – Secondary School Team of the Year, Ikko Shibuya – Secondary School Sportsperson of the Year, Kanah Andrews-Nahu – Junior Sportswoman of the Year and Maori Achievement Award, Lucy Makaea – Junior Sportswoman of the Year and Pacific Island Achievement Award, and Percy Maka – Pacific Island Achievement Award. It was admirable to see our talented students ranked amongst a large pool of very elite athletes. Of our students nominated, Kanah Andrews-Nahu won the Maori Achievement Award. A big congratulations to her on her success and to those students that were nominated.
DON OLIVER AWARDS
Avondale College students Kanah Andrews-Nahu, Lucy Makaea and Ikko Shibuya all attended the Don Oliver Awards Dinner on Wednesday 14 November at the Trust Arena, Henderson. The night was very successful, with all students coming away with a scholarship to assist in their sporting endeavours for 2019. Kanah Andrews-Nahu won a Gold award for Olympic Weightlifting, Lucy Makaea won a Bronze award for Surf Lifesaving and Ikko Shibuya won a Training Grant for Swimming. Well done to you all for your outstanding success throughout the year, we look forward to following your progress in the coming years!
