B WORLD KINDNESS WEEK! Each year World Kindness Day is celebrated around the globe on 13 November, and yesterday Avondale College students joined in the celebrations with atawhai-focused discussions and activities in their home room classes. First launched in 1998, World Kindness Day aims at encouraging participants to make the world a better place by celebrating and promoting good deeds and pledging acts of kindness. It was a perfect excuse for students to fill out an Avondale College HEART of Gold card to acknowledge and encourage fellow students and staff.

We are celebrating the success of two newly published authors, our very own English Department's Dr Drayton and Mr Duckor-Jones!

Dr Joanne Drayton's book is Hudson & Halls: The Food of Love - a biography of the famous New Zealand cooking duo. This is the sixth ground-breaking biography written by Dr Drayton - her first, The Search for Anne Perry, is a New York Times bestseller.

Avi Duckor-Jones's Swim is his first book, and tells the story of Jacob, an open-water, distance swimmer who is given a chance for redemption and reconciliation with his past... Swim has won the 2018 Viva La Novella Prize!

INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMME For the past week and a half, our International students have been involved in the first part of their action-packed four week activity programme. Students have had the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp, where they experienced the activities and amazing atmosphere of the Tongariro National Park. For our Auckland-based students, the programme has involved a mixture of school based and outdoor activities. Students have engaged with information technology and media studies projects as well as trying out windsurfing and paddle boarding at Point Chevalier Beach, sailing, kayaking and rafting at the Westhaven Marina. The programme continues over the next two and a half weeks, with more exciting opportunities for students to experience some of the amazing activities on offer here in New Zealand.

Summer Reading

DIAMOND IN THE RING

Avondale College staff member Jacqueline Nesi was presented with the Female Champion of Champions special award after she made her debut in the boxing ring at the Diamonds in the Ring charity event last weekend.

The mother of three works in the Learning Development department at Avondale College. She hadn't initially planned on taking part in the fundraising event as she didn't think she had the time to manage training and work whilst raising her autistic twins. However, with the help of her older son and husband, their family made it work.

"I may have not won the fight - but I am a All our books will be back on the shelves... winner - we are all winners," she told the Sign Up Now @ Avcol Library crowd after her fight. ...to come and grab some holiday reading... The judges selected Jackie to receive the Champion of Champions award for the blue team, saying, "for her and her family, completing the fight and going on the Diamonds journey made her a winner."

Lunchtime Funds raised on the night went towards the work of the Women's Refuge.

SPECIAL FAREWELL After more than twenty-two years service, Avondale College has bid a fond farewell to our Accounts Officer, Mrs Geraldine Morley.

Mrs Morley will be a familiar face to many, as she has worked in a number of areas over the years, including the Taurewa room, community education, the administration office, and most recently, in our accounts department. During this time she has been a passionate supporter of the wider life of the school - supporting Taurewa camps, following college sport (especially cricket!) with enthusiasm, and just a few weekends ago helping to sew costumes for the school show!

Geraldine has worked tirelessly to uphold our school's aim of excellence and will be greatly missed by her colleagues and the wider school community. We wish her every happiness as she enjoys a change of pace in the months and years ahead!

SCHOOL DONATION & TAIKAKA To all families who have paid the school donation this year: THANK YOU! Your voluntary contribution enables us to offer many extras associated with sporting, cultural and recreational activities, including Taikaka, the Avondale College yearbook. The production of Taikaka 2018 is underway and this will be posted in January to all families who have paid the school donation by end of Term 4.

SPORTS REPORT Monday 5 November – Sunday 11 November

ATHLETICS

Round 2 of Athletics Auckland Secondary Schools Challenge Cup Two vanloads of athletes headed out to the Yvette Williams track in Pakuranga on 10 November and the weather was perfect for a full day of athletics!

Avondale went into the second round of competition at the top of the leader board: a staggering 494 points ahead of the next school.

The other secondary schools noticeably upped their game this week, bringing more athletes along to compete. However, once again the black singlets were out in full force on the track and field.

Special performances came from Joanna Poland who competed in the U16 Women’s 3000m Championship which was held during the senior meet. She dominated from the start and although a runner behind her tried a last ditch attempt to overtake her lead in the final stretch, Joanna had enough gas left in the tank to hold her off and take the win. Congratulations, Jo! Maclani Michael also did a great job on her 100m sprints, looking incredibly powerful on the track. Tremayne Redman-Gardner was very busy with four events during the meet and more than pulled his weight in contributing to the day’s points. Lex Revell-Lewis ran in a particularly quick 400m heat, mixed in with U16, U18 and U20 athletes, but it was the pressure he needed ahead of nationals.

So after two rounds, Avondale College are still dominating, with a total of 1482 points, well ahead of the next school (Macleans College) on 805. Macleans are definitely ones to watch as they have fired up their challenge for the Cup – we are eagerly awaiting the third and fourth rounds of competition in the weeks ahead.

CRICKET

The 1st XI Boys team played Howick College on Saturday 10 November.

We started the match by batting and managed to score 118 runs, all out. We then went out to bowl, but couldn’t hold Howick under 118 runs. They met the target of 119 runs with three wickets to spare. Final score: 118/10 to 119/7 to Howick.

Our 2nd XI Boys team played Auckland Grammar Gold on Saturday. We started the game by batting and in 20 overs scored 106 runs. Auckland Grammar then went out to bat. Due to a shortage of experienced bowlers on our side, they were able to track down 107 runs within the 20 overs. This was a tough loss for our team, but as a new team we are still trying to find our way. The boys are really enjoying themselves and we are improving as each game progresses.

The Year 10 Boys Cricket side continue to hold form as they beat Auckland Grammar Green in a very convincing win on Saturday. We started out batting and managed to score 130 runs at the end of the last over. Holding true to their standard performance, the boys kept Auckland Grammar to 112 runs. We ended the game winning by an 18 run margin. This was a great effort by the team and we look forward to continued success.

The Year 9 Boys team had an exceptional performance on Saturday, continuing to maintain the high expectation of the Avondale Junior Boys cricket programme this term. St Peter’s Blue were our opposition and we started out as batsmen. We obtained a high 155 runs at the end of the last over. St Peter’s then went out to bat and we bowled them all out for 89 runs. This was a fantastic result: winning by 66 runs!

Final score: 155/3 to 89/10 to us. Awesome job, team!

Our 1st XI Girls team won by default against Mt Roskill Grammar.

TOUCH

The Junior Boys team played Auckland Grammar Gold on Tuesday 6 November. We scored three tries throughout the game, but we let Auckland Grammar score eight, ending the game with a five point loss.

VOLLEYBALL

The Junior A Girls team played Kelston Girls last week. They started the game out superbly, clenching the set with plenty of points to spare.

With a new group in the rotation for the second set, we struggled to find our feet and ended up losing the set, making it a 1-1 game. The final set was the decider of the match. Unfortunately, we weren't able to follow through, losing the set by seven points. Final score: 2-1 sets to Kelston Girls.

The Junior Boys team played Kelston A and Auckland Grammar.

Kelston again seemed to get the better of our teams, as we lost in a closely fought battle, 2-1. We then picked ourselves up to beat a competitive Auckland Grammar side, 2-1.

All the best to our teams as they compete at the Auckland Secondary Schools Junior Volleyball Championships this week at Pulman Park Arena, Takanini from Thursday 15 November to Saturday 17 November.
