SCHOOL CLOSING EARLY Avondale College won FOUR awards at the Showdown Awards on Saturday night, for the school's production of Catch Me If You Can! The red carpet event was held at the Mercury Theatre, and recognised excellence in the performing arts in Auckland secondary schools' dramatic and musical productions.

Avondale College had been nominated for 12 different awards in the 'Musical' category, amidst some fierce competition from a large number of Auckland schools. FAREWELL TO MRS KEMP SPORTS ACADEMY

A familiar face at Avondale College has (once again) bid us farewell...

Mrs Esther Kemp, who has most recently been working at the College as a relief teacher taught her final class last week. Mrs Kemp's association with Avondale College spans an astonishing seven decades; she was a pupil here in the late 1950s, and then both she and her late husband, Mr Paul Kemp, taught here for many years. Mrs Kemp's children and grandchildren have also been students of the College. We wish her every happiness as she enjoys a muchdeserved change of pace.

ALUMNI NEWS: NZ MUSIC AWARDS Former Avondale College student Matt Sadgrove's band, Sons of Zion, are up for Best Roots Artist and Vodafone Single of the Year for ‘Drift Away’ at the upcoming Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards!

The song was composed by bass guitarist Matt in just 30 minutes and spent time at the top 40 on the NZ singles chart earlier this year. It's the band's fastest growing single to date.

Matt says, “It was like one of those songs you can kind of jam to a guitar. I mean it's a really basic song. It's really simple and I think that's why people dig it. There's a movie Inception of Leonardo DiCaprio, that's the kind of imagery I used. There's a beach scene there where he lost his missus. I wrote it more of a sad song but with the up-vibes.”

The 2018 Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards are being held on 15 November.

SPORTS REPORT Monday 29 October to Sunday 4 November

ATHLETICS

Round 1 of the Athletics Auckland Secondary Schools Challenge Cup began this past weekend. It was a cold and windy start to the Challenge Cup rounds for Avondale College. We fronted with a team of 15 athletes, keen to defend the Cup and start racking up points for the school. The black singlet was a dominant colour on both the track and field.

Some of our athletes in attendance are not part of the Athletics Nationals team as such, but were keen to come along, to participate in the meet and help towards the points system for the school. It is fantastic to have them be a part of the athletics challenge.

A quick mention goes to the hurdles trio of Joshua Saluni, Max Van Der Westhuizen and Tremayne Redman-Gardner, who all participated in their first ever 300m hurdles race. It was a hard-fought run, but our boys are clearly natural speedsters. Joshua Saluni showed incredible technique over all the hurdles, but by the final hurdle a small miscalculated step found him tumbling only 20m from the finish line. However, like a true professional, he got up and finished the race despite fresh grazes from the track.

Joanna Poland and Keon Hall ran some fantastic times in the distance races (3000m and 1500m), cheered on by their team mates in the stands. Grace Nweke also competed in her first triple jump event, and surprised herself with her own performance – the triple jump can be a tricky one to master.

Our sprinters were fantastic on the track, running to set their new season times ahead of the Nationals competition and to gauge

personal performance. At this stage, Avondale College is on top of the score board ahead of Macleans College and Sacred Heart College.

Well done to all our athletes! We are looking forward to round two!

CRICKET

Saturday 3rd of November saw the 1st XI boys play against Kristin School in a challenging and windy match. Avondale batted first and posted a score of 123 runs, all out in 39.4 overs. Vatsal Gajjar top scored for Avondale with 24 runs, followed by Elyaas Sayed Akbar, Vinit Gajjar and Josh De Zoysa all on 14. The outcome of the match was dependent on a good bowling performance from Avondale. After 41 overs, Kristin were all out for 106 and Avondale won by 17 runs. Key bowlers on the day were Josh De Zoysa with four wickets, Vatsal Gajjar with three wickets, Jay Patel with two wickets and Dhruv Patel taking one wicket on his debut for the 1st XI Boys side. The wicket keeper, Nathan Borough, also picked up two catches. It was an all-round team effort – congratulations, boys!

The Year 10 Boys team competed against St Peter’s on Saturday. St Peter’s went out to bat first, scoring 90 runs. With the target in mind and a confident team of bowlers, our team caught them up quite easily with six wickets to spare in less than 17 overs. This was an awesome effort by all team members. The final score: 91/4 to 90/10 to us.

The Year 9 Boys team maintained form this week as they convincingly beat Liston College in their match on Saturday. We batted first, obtaining 119 runs. We then went out to bowl, holding Liston to a minimal 42 runs, getting them all out. This was a tremendous effort by the team!

Game 2 saw the 1st XI Girls Cricket team take on Premier Grade champions from Term 1 - Baradene College, at home on a fine and sunny Wednesday afternoon. Baradene won the toss and elected to field first. Avondale were bowled out for 31 runs in the 17th over.

Player of the Day, Diya Desai, batted well, putting her body on the line many times throughout the game. Baradene reached the total required to win in the 6th over with both opening batsmen remaining at the crease. Avondale did miss a few chances in the field, but did well considering the tough opposition. In the end Avondale lost by 10 wickets, with a final score of 31/10 to 32/0.

RUGBY 7’s

The Junior Boys Rugby 7’s team competed in the Auckland Secondary Schools Rugby 7’s Championships on Wednesday 31 October. The team was scheduled to play Mount Albert Grammar, Papatoetoe High School, St Paul’s College and Howick College in their pool rounds. The teams we played had some very experienced players and we were defeated in each game. Nevertheless, as the tournament progressed, the team really improved, closing the score line in each game. Throughout the course of the competition some outstanding tries were seen by team mates Ola Hoeft, Wilfrid Hansen and Elive Sopoaga. The team faced some very tough competition, yet remained positive and fought hard in every game.

VOLLEYBALL

The Junior A Girls Volleyball team continues to uphold high standards as they beat Auckland Girls Grammar and Mount Albert Grammar in convincing 2-0 wins. The team will play their last game of the regular season this Thursday against Kelston Girls and will then compete in the Auckland Secondary Schools Junior Championships to be held from Thursday 15 November to Saturday 17 November at Pulman Park Arena, Takanini. All the best to the team!

The Junior B Girls side had tough competition last week, losing to Green Bay 1, 2-0. They then went on to play Rutherford College, coming up short again, but managing to secure one set. The final score was 2-1 to Rutherford College.

Our Junior Boys Volleyball team had a mixed bag of results last week.

They played Massey Black and were defeated 2-0. They then came out firing to beat Mt Roskill 2-0. The team will also compete in the upcoming Auckland Secondary Schools Junior Championships. We look forward to following their progress.

GRACE NWEKE JOINS NORTHERN MYSTICS Year 12 student Grace Nweke (our Premier Netball team's Goal Shoot) has just been named as one of three new training partners to join the Northern Mystics for next year’s elite New Zealand competition!

The Northern Mystics coach Helene Wilson said they were excited about Grace joining the team.

“Grace is a shooter whose height, jump and movement will bring more versatility to our attacking end,” Wilson said. “She catches balls from anywhere and we can’t wait to see her blossom in our environment where her potential can be discovered.”

JIU JITSU

AWARD FOR PERCY MAKA Avondale College’s Sian Hancy, a member of the New Zealand American Top Team, competed at the Pan Pacific IBJJF Jiu-Jitsu Championships which were held in Melbourne, Australia, from Friday 26 October to Saturday 27 October 2018.

Sian won a gold medal in the heavyweight division, and won a second gold medal for a challenge that was made by a competitor who was above her weight class, beating them too. This competition is a world class event where Sian was up against the best athletes in the sport of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Wrestling in the Pacific region. What an outstanding achievement this is.

Congratulations to Year 9 student Percy Maka who won the Junior Sportsman of the Year and the Overall Supreme Award for 2018 at the Papakura Sports Awards held on 28 October!

At Percy's first senior meet this season, the young discus thrower threw a massive 54.90 to break a 17 year old standing Auckland discus record of 51.90m. He also threw 57.60m on his last throw, which was disallowed due to a minor foot fault which he will work on perfecting before the Auckland Champs held on the 1st of February 2019.

GENERAL • The first three days of exams involve Year 9 & Year 10 students.

• Year 9 exams are in Social Science, Mathematics, English and Science and Languages.

• Year 10 exams are in Social Science, Mathematics, English and Science and in Option subjects.

• Year 10 option exams run according to student’s timetable.

• Most exams are 2 hours, but not all.

Exams will run for periods 1 & 2 and periods 4 & 5.

• Normal timetable runs period 3.

• If an exam is not 2 hours then the students involved will be required to wait in the classroom until the 2 hour time period is completed.

• On Wednesday 7th November periods 4 and 5 will be normal timetable classes for Year 10. For Year 9 the morning will be normal timetable.

• Option exams for Year 10 only are on Wednesday morning as well as Thursday morning and afternoon.

• No study leave is given to junior students during these exams.

• No permission is given for

appointments during the exam days.

• A medical certificate will be required for an absence from an exam due to illness.

• When sitting exams, normal school discipline applies.

• All junior home classrooms have been changed to the same as their exam for the core exams.

• Exams are to start promptly at 9.15am in the morning and 1.15pm in the afternoon.

EXAMINATION ROOMS In the Exam Room • Sit in rows as instructed.

• Leave bags where directed.

• Make sure your cell phone is switched off and in your bag. It is not allowed to be in your pocket.

• Electronic dictionaries are not allowed in practice external exams.

• Approved calculators only, check with your Mathematics teacher.

• Please ensure that the exam room is left in the appropriate state as to which it was found. This means checking that desks and chairs are set

correctly, no writing on desks has occurred and any rubbish is put in the classroom bin. This is vitally important as staff and students have spent time presenting rooms in a particular way.

To fit with NZQA conditions a) Students should not use twink. It is in their interests to write legibly. b) There is no food or drink in the exam room, except clear water bottle which must not be labeled c) Students are advised to take only clear pencil cases into the exam room. d) Watches cannot be worn during the exam.

• The exam begins the moment distribution of papers starts.

• Total silence is necessary from then on.

• Listen carefully for additional instructions or correction of misprints.

• Check that you have the correct paper with all pages correctly printed.

• Read instructions carefully.

• During the examination, students must not communicate with other candidates, copy from another candidate’s work, borrow any equipment or make undue noise or disturb other candidates.

• No student is to leave the exam room until full time has expired.

• Uniform and appearance must be of the required standard.

• If a student needs to go to the toilet during an exam this is allowed. Before they go, their exam paper will be noted when they left, and the student will be asked to indicate where their cellphone is. If they have a cellphone on them, which they did not put into their bag, they are to leave it with the supervisor, to be returned at the end of the exam.

Examination irregularities and misconduct will be considered by Mr J Smith (Qualifications Manager) and Dr Brown (Deputy Principal Curriculum, NZQA Principal’s Nominee) and may result in disciplinary action. If this occurs in an internal NZQA assessment the consequences may involve NZQA.
