AUSTRALIAN MATHS COMPETITION AWARDS It was the great pleasure of Mr Davis and Mr Mazid to accompany six of our top junior mathematicians to the prestigious Australian Mathematics Trust Award Ceremony held at Selwyn College on Monday 29 October. All students invited were recipients of awards to mark the outstanding achievement of scoring a High Distinction in the Australian Maths Competition. A competition run in over 30 countries, a High Distinction award recognises those students in the top 3%. ICT SUCCESS The computing labs of A26, A27 and A28 are - as always - busy hubs as students are hard at work on their school assignments while also making the most of the ICT certification opportunities on offer. NCEA classes have now delivered 413 unique sub-projects - equating to 80.5% more student output across a wide range of applications. Cambridge students have been working through projects and techniques with Mr Thawley in preparation for their new-format exams. To celebrate student achievement, a digital hall of fame is now being designed which will showcase some of our students' outstanding project work. This will be able to be accessed via login to the particular Sharepoint sites. Results to date: • 5798 industry certifications have been gained since 2014 with now 1355 participants involved – the ICT staff have proctored well over 10,000 exams between them! • 2239 have now been gained this year, meaning just 83 to go to match 2017’s record year – with still 8 or so weeks to go! • 1386 NCEA credits have been gained from students gaining 985 industry qualifications • 1135 industry qualifications have been gained from Junior, Cambridge, Commerce, Technology and Innovation Academy • 119 have been gained by staff also • Microsoft Technology Associates, notably Microsoft’s flagship qualifications for Mobility & Devices and Programming – have more than doubled last year's achievement rate at 123! • ESB qualification, thanks to Mr Bramston’s Commerce department, continues a strong run with well over double at 145! • Adobe qualifications have been flying out the door – with a staggering 12 multi-application Design and or Web Specialist holders; underpinned by 165 overall! • Autodesk – with NCEA L1 and L2 packing in the top end design projects – Fusion 360 now has 35 holders of ACU! Drivers who stop in the wrong place to drop off passengers put the safety of the students, staff and school property at risk. Thank you.
ABSENCES Parents/Caregivers must notify the College by 9.30am each day if their child is away. You can do this in several ways: a) Send a notification via Family Connection (preferred) • Log in to Family Connection • Select ‘Available E-Forms’ (at top left) • Click on Absence Notification • Fill out the details, save and submit. You will receive a confirmatory email once the notification is approved. This replaces the need to supply an absence note to the home room teacher. b) Email the Attendance Officer: absences@avcol.school.nz. Please include your child’s full name, home room class and the reason for the absence. c) Phone the Absence Line: (09) 820 1071 Students are required to provide a written note for all absences, even after the school has been notified by phone. This note must be brought on the first day of attendance after the absence and given to the home room teacher. Parents will receive a text from the school if their child is absent from home room without explanation.

SPORTS REPORT Monday 15th October – Sunday 21st October
CRICKET The 1st XI Boys Cricket team played Takapuna Grammar on Saturday 20th October. Takapuna were all out at 224 runs. We then went out to bat but only managed to score 163 runs before the rain set in and the game was called off. We were short of 62 runs and due to the Duckworth Lewis Method, we were defeated. The final score: 224/10 to 163/8 to Takapuna. The boys are looking for a better game this coming week and hoping for better weather! The 2nd XI Boys Cricket team played their first game of the year against Auckland Grammar Red team. Auckland Grammar batted first, obtaining 131 runs. We then went out to bat with the target of 132 runs. The team fell short by 33 runs, ending at 99 runs, all out. Final score: 131/10 to 99/10 to Auckland Grammar. The Year 10 Boys team played Sacred Heart Snedden on Saturday, in the first game of the term for the team. The boys bowled first, holding Sacred Heart to 114 runs after 20 overs. The chase was on, with 115 runs the target. At the end of the overs the boys were short of just one run to win the game, but managed to reach 114 runs, drawing the game. Considering they only had ten players, they played magnificently! Awesome job, team. The 1st XI Girls Cricket team had an away game against Saint Kentigern College. Avondale lost the toss and were asked to bowl first. Shahana Samadi got Avondale off to a flying start by getting a wicket in the first over of the game. A run out in the third over by Ritisha Kumar had Avondale on top, but then the next two Saint Kentigern College batmen settled in and started scoring runs 4
until the end of the innings, putting up an impressive total of 159 runs. In the second innings Avondale College scored 110 runs, falling short of the total required to win. Opening batsman Hetanshi Chauhan batted through the innings, remaining not out and scoring 19 runs. The final score was 110/7 to 159/3 to St Kentigern College. The girls have moved up from B grade and are now facing Premier grade teams this season. They remain in positive spirits and are dedicated to work hard in order to be competitive in their new grade.
TOUCH The Junior Boys Touch team had some tough competition playing against Rutherford and St Peter’s on Tuesday 16th October at Grey Lynn Park. The boys were defeated in both games, losing 8-0 against Rutherford and 13-2 against St Peter’s A.

VOLLEYBALL The Junior B Girls Volleyball team played Lynfield 1 and Mt Albert Blue on Thursday 18th October. Both teams were a little more experienced than our team, thus we were defeated 2-0 in both games. The Junior Boys team played a tough Onehunga A side, losing 2-1 in the end after a close game. We then went on to play Henderson High School, who we beat convincingly 2-0.

INTERPHASE DANCE SHOWCASE
An astonishing 167 students took to the stage to perform at our Dance Showcase last week! The two night event featured students from our Performing Arts Academy, as well as senior and junior Dance classes and co-curricular groups. Highlights included the high-energy K-Pop group, some amazing hip-hop groups, and the very thoughtful and polished contemporary performances from our Scholarship students. Well done to all involved!

GENERAL • The first three days of exams involve Year 9 & Year 10 students. • Year 9 exams are in Social Science, Mathematics, English and Science and Languages. • Year 10 exams are in Social Science, Mathematics, English and Science and in Option subjects. • Year 10 option exams run according to student’s timetable. • Most exams are 2 hours, but not all. Exams will run for periods 1 & 2 and periods 4 & 5. • Normal timetable runs period 3. • If an exam is not 2 hours then the students involved will be required to wait in the classroom until the 2 hour time period is completed. • On Wednesday 7th November periods 4 and 5 will be normal timetable classes for Year 10. For Year 9 the morning will be normal timetable. • Option exams for Year 10 only are on Wednesday morning as well as Thursday morning and afternoon. • No study leave is given to junior students during these exams. • No permission is given for 10
appointments during the exam days. • A medical certificate will be required for an absence from an exam due to illness. • When sitting exams, normal school discipline applies. • All junior home classrooms have been changed to the same as their exam for the core exams. • Exams are to start promptly at 9.15am in the morning and 1.15pm in the afternoon. EXAMINATION ROOMS In the Exam Room • Sit in rows as instructed. • Leave bags where directed. • Make sure your cell phone is switched off and in your bag. It is not allowed to be in your pocket. • Electronic dictionaries are not allowed in practice external exams. • Approved calculators only, check with your Mathematics teacher. • Please ensure that the exam room is left in the appropriate state as to which it was found. This means checking that desks and chairs are set

correctly, no writing on desks has occurred and any rubbish is put in the classroom bin. This is vitally important as staff and students have spent time presenting rooms in a particular way. To fit with NZQA conditions a) Students should not use twink. It is in their interests to write legibly. b) There is no food or drink in the exam room, except clear water bottle which must not be labeled c) Students are advised to take only clear pencil cases into the exam room. d) Watches cannot be worn during the exam. • The exam begins the moment distribution of papers starts. • Total silence is necessary from then on. • Listen carefully for additional instructions or correction of misprints. • Check that you have the correct paper with all pages correctly printed. • Read instructions carefully. • During the examination, students must not communicate with other candidates, copy from another candidate’s work, borrow any equipment or make undue noise or disturb other candidates. • No student is to leave the exam room until full time has expired. • Uniform and appearance must be of the required standard. • If a student needs to go to the toilet during an exam this is allowed. Before they go, their exam paper will be noted when they left, and the student will be asked to indicate where their cellphone is. If they have a cellphone on them, which they did not put into their bag, they are to leave it with the supervisor, to be returned at the end of the exam. Examination irregularities and misconduct will be considered by Mr J Smith (Qualifications Manager) and Dr Brown (Deputy Principal Curriculum, NZQA Principal’s Nominee) and may result in disciplinary action. If this occurs in an internal NZQA assessment the consequences may involve NZQA.
