Congratulations to Avondale College's Senior Contemporary Group who performed at the Tempo dance festival during the holidays, and won the award for "Best Musical Risk Taker". DAVID SELECTED FOR YOUNG SHAKESPEARE COMPANY David Tuitama is having a massive year! Not only did he win the lead role of FBI agent Carl Hanratty in Avcol's production of Catch Me If You Can and the lead role of Shrek in National Youth Theatre Company's upcoming production of Shrek, but now the Year 12 student has just learned he has been selected to be a part of the Young Shakespeare Company that travels to London in 2019. David is one of just 24 students selected from over 3000 young New Zealanders who attended the Shakespeare Nationals in Wellington earlier this year. Congratulations, David!

HAREATA TO MEET THE ROYALS ON TOUR Avondale College student Hareata Waenga has been offered the opportunity of a lifetime: the chance to officially meet the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. The Year 13 student is the Warrant Officer for Auckland's 19th squadron in the Air Training Cadets, and is just one of three cadets from the national organisation to be invited to meet the royal couple when they tour New Zealand later this week. Hareata said she was delighted to be asked to be involved. "It's a massive honour to represent New Zealand and the New Zealand Cadet Forces as a whole. It's just a bonus to get to meet the Duke and Duchess of Sussex as well!" The 18 year old has been part of the Air Training Cadets since Year 9, when she saw an ANZAC Day parade in New Lynn and was inspired by watching the Cenataph Guard. Since then, ATC has been an increasingly huge part of her life as she has steadily risen her way up the ranks to the position of Warrant Officer. Her involvement has seen her learn much about New Zealand's Air Force and other defence forces, and alongside training in flying, gliding, bushcraft, parades, competitions, camps and more, she has had the opportunity to visit all bar one of the country's defence force bases. Hareata's ultimate goal is to join the New Zealand Air Force, and she says that the opportunities the New Zealand Cadet Forces organisation has given her have been amazing. "I'm extremely proud of the organisation I'm part of," she says. "I would recommend it to anyone." Find out more about the New Zealand Cadet Forces here:
DRAMA MAKEUP ASSESSMENT Gunshot wounds, bite marks and scars - it was a gruesome day in the Drama classrooms as our Year 10 students sat their makeup assessment! They designed this makeup for a character from their own devised work and the completed assessment gives them four NCEA Level 1 credits.

ABSENCES Parents/Caregivers must notify the College by 9.30am each day if their child is away. You can do this in several ways: a) Send a notification via Family Connection (preferred) • Log in to Family Connection • Select ‘Available E-Forms’ (at top left) • Click on Absence Notification • Fill out the details, save and submit. You will receive a confirmatory email once the notification is approved. This replaces the need to supply an absence note to the home room teacher. b) Email the Attendance Officer: absences@avcol.school.nz. Please include your child’s full name, home room class and the reason for the absence. c) Phone the Absence Line: (09) 820 1071 Students are required to provide a written note for all absences, even after the school has been notified by phone. This note must be brought on the first day of attendance after the absence and given to the home room teacher. Parents will receive a text from the school if their child is absent from home room without explanation.

SPORTS REPORT Monday 15th October – Sunday 21st October
CRICKET The 1st XI Boys played a preseason match against Rangitoto College on Sunday 21 October at Avondale College. The boys played well and showed improvement from their previous game. In the end the team fell short, scoring only 85/11 to 130/11, resulting in a 45 run loss. The team continues to keep their heads held high as the Term 4 cricket season begins this coming Saturday. We look forward to following their progress as they compete in the 1A Grade competition. All the best to the team and all our other cricket teams competing!
RUGBY 7’s The Auckland Secondary Schools Senior 7’s Championships were held on Friday 19 September at Waitemata Rugby Park, Henderson. Avondale College was represented by the Senior Girls 7’s side and the Senior Boys 7’s side. Unfortunately our boys’ team didn’t win a game, but they had challenging matches against Kelston Boys High School, Papatoetoe High School and Otahuhu College. Our girls team also had a hard day, falling short to Green Bay, Howick, Botany Downs, and Southern Cross. However, they didn’t stay down all day as they fought their way back to win the last game of the tournament against Lynfield College. The final score was 35-14 to Avondale. A tough day of competition was seen by both teams, nevertheless they maintained positive attitudes and found enjoyment in playing some strong opposition.
ALUMNI: UNIVERSITY OF AUCKLAND'S 40 UNDER 40 The University of Auckland has released its annual list of 40 exceptional graduates under the age of 40, and featured on this list are two former students of Avondale College: Claire Achmad and Nishika de Rosairo. Claire Achmad was recognised in the Humanitarians category for her work in children’s rights and advocacy. Appointed as Head Girl in her final year at Avondale College, Claire says the impact of poverty on many students in West Auckland had a profound impact on her and led to her involvement in initiatives to foster community spirit and wellbeing. She studied a Bachelor of Law and Bachelor of Arts majoring in political studies at the University of Auckland, and was admitted to the bar in 2007. Over her career she has worked on the rights of unaccompanied minor asylum seekers in the Netherlands and Europe, for the NZ Human Rights Commission, World Vision Australia, and is currently on the executive leadership team at Barnados. Nishika de Rosairo was recognised in the Entrepreneurs category. Born in Zambia, Nishika was raised in Sri Lanka and moved to New Zealand in her early teens where she attended Avondale College. She went on to gain a Bachelor of Commerce with honours in change and innovation at the University of Auckland, and an MBA from the University of Washington. Nishika built a successful career working for Silicon Valley and Fortune 500 companies including Apple, Deloitte Consulting, Salesforce, Cisco, Chevron and Levi. She is now the Founder and CEO of fashion brand dE ROSAIRO, made in New York and San Francisco and sold predominantly online. The annual 40 under 40 list recognises that many of the highest achievers produced by the University of Auckland are making huge contributions be it to business, technology or a social good before the age of 40. It is quite an achievement to be recognised on the list given the University of Auckland graduates some 10,000 students each year.
VOLLEYBALL A worthy night of volleyball was seen by our Junior Girls' teams on Thursday 18 October. The Junior A Girls' teams played extremely well, defeating Baradene 1, 2-0, and beating Waitakere, 2-1. Our Junior Girls B team also won their game against Green Bay 2, 2-1. What a way to start the season, teams; keep it up! The Junior Boys played exceptionally well as they won against Waitakere and Kelston Boys B. The Junior Boys defeated Waitakere, 2-1, and also defeated Kelston Boys B, 2-0. Congratulations to all volleyball teams on their outstanding efforts.

TAUREWA CAMP Whether kayaking down a river, tramping in the Tongariro National Park or cooking a massive chocolate self-saucing pudding, Taurewa trips are an action-packed week full of highlights! Taurewa is Avondale College's very own campsite in the central North Island, where students can spend time experiencing a variety of activities and challenges in the great outdoors. Activities around camp include a low ropes course, a walk through the local stream, and the Fairy Falls walk where students have the opportunity to stand behind a waterfall. Other activities include kayaking at Tokaanu, walking the Taranaki Falls track in the Tongariro National Park and circumnavigating Lake Rotopounamu. For senior students, the overnight tramp is always a highlight! Year 10, Year 12 and Year 13 students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp. We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa Camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure. Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to remind their parents when they know their camp is coming up!
