It's Māori Language Week! Alongside a school-wide focus on learning Te Reo, our students have also been learning traditional Māori arts including: tītī tōrea, tī rakau and poi. The students have been hosting lunchtime demonstrations and playing traditional Māori games such as pātokotoko, tutukai and kurawiniwini.
PASIFIKA LEADERS' DINNER A special evening was held in the library yesterday evening for guests and community leaders, to celebrate and support the success of our Pasifika students. Items from our Gospel Choir and Year 13 Music students helped to create a wonderful atmosphere, and following speeches by four of our students, a worthwhile time of discussion was generated. We look forward to continuing to connect with our Pasifika community in future talanoaga gatherings.

PROGRESS REPORTS & SENIOR SUBJECT REPORT EVENING Tuesday 25 September Progress reports for all our senior students will be posted to families in the next few days. Please remember that copies of student reports are available when you log into Family Connection and click on ‘Documents’ under the Student Information tab. Avondale College’s Senior Report Evening will be held on 25 September, in the College Atrium from 4.30pm to 7.00pm, giving parents the opportunity to meet with teachers to discuss the progress of their child. The online booking facility for this evening will be available on Family Connection from Sunday 9 September until Sunday 23 September. Once bookings close, appointments can only be made manually by students using the form posted out with the report.

ABSENCES Parents/Caregivers must notify the College by 9.30am each day if their child is away. You can do this in several ways: a) Send a notification via Family Connection (preferred) • Log in to Family Connection • Select ‘Available E-Forms’ (at top left) • Click on Absence Notification • Fill out the details, save and submit. You will receive a confirmatory email once the notification is approved. This replaces the need to supply an absence note to the home room teacher. b) Email the Attendance Officer: absences@avcol.school.nz. Please include your child’s full name, home room class and the reason for the absence. c) Phone the Absence Line: (09) 820 1071 Students are required to provide a written note for all absences, even after the school has been notified by phone. This note must be brought on the first day of attendance after the absence and given to the home room teacher. Parents will receive a text from the school if their child is absent from home room without explanation.
Students must have a note from home if they are signing out of the College.

FAMILY CONNECTION The Avondale Family Connection allows families to have direct access, through the internet, to a wide range of information about their child’s academic performance, attendance, activities, events, trips, parent/ teacher interview appointments and teacher only days. The information provided includes: Class allocations, timetables, class teachers, NCEA and Cambridge results, attendance data, detention records and assessment reports. SPORTS REPORT Monday 3rd September – Sunday 9th September
BADMINTON
Senior Boys: Avondale's Senior Boys won 4-2 in their opening match against Francis Douglas at the Yonex NZ Secondary Schools Championships held in the North Shore. Unfortunately, following this the boys lost three games in a row against Alfriston College, Rangitoto College and Takapuna Grammar, to see themselves cross over for a 9th spot playoff. After a 5-1 win against Ormiston College followed by a 4-2 loss to John Paul College, the boys ended the tournament in 12th place overall. Senior Girls: The Senior Girls started the Yonex NZ Secondary Schools Championships rather slowly, falling to Westlake Girls, Macleans College and Rangitoto College, 6-0. However a much improved fight against Palmerston North ended in a 3-3 draw but the girls lost on individual points. This did not dampen the girls' morale as they stepped out firing against John Paul College. A 4-2 victory was followed by a narrow defeat to Botany Downs. The girls played Whanganui High in their last pool match of the competition. They showed great character to come out on top, winning 6-0 and finishing the competition in 6th place overall.

BASKETBALL
Premier Boys: Our Premier Boys team had a good NZSS Zone 1 Premierships tournament, ending in 11th place. They had outstanding games against Pakuranga, Orewa, Kristin and St Peters, their Premier foe, in which they obtained convincing wins across the board. They came close to Westlake in their pool match, but lost by ten points, with the final score: 94-104. The team ended their tournament on a high, beating Orewa in a second game, 80-63. The team has had a lot of challenges this past year, but have managed to stick together and come out fighting. The team will hold onto the majority of their players next season and will definitely be a force to be reckoned with. Senior Girls: Our Senior Girls Basketball team also ended their NZSS Premiership Zone 1 Tournament in 11th place. They had two tough games against Massey and Rangitoto Premier Girls teams, losing by big margins, but managed to come back strongly to convincingly defeat Long Bay College and Orewa College, whom they hadn’t beaten during the year. The team lost in a close match against Mt Roskill Grammar 65-60, another Senior A rival and ended the tournament in a loss to Birkenhead College, 48-62. The girls gave it their all in the last game, but ran out of gas. As the youngest team in the competition, the girls did themselves proud. They show much promise and have improved a lot throughout the season.
FOOTBALL 1st XI Girls The 1st XI Girls kicked off the Maurice Hulme Cup with a 1-1 draw against Waikato Diocesan. However, the early tournament jitters only lasted briefly as the girls bounced back with four wins on the trot against Pakuranga College (4-0), Glendowie (2-0), Waiheke (5-0), and Inglewood (2-0). The girls were looking in great shape with Maclani Michael scoring nine of the 14 goals at this stage, and captain Isabella Barnes showing her brilliant leadership skills on and off the field. In their quarter-finals match against Marist, the girls played a superb game, ending in a 0-0 draw. Heading into a penalty shootout contest, the girls just fell short, losing 4-3 in the end. Only able to finish in 5th, the girls played against Pukekohe High in the 5th place play-off semifinals, but lost 4-0. Their final game against Wanganui High for 7th place ended again in a penalty shootout, with the girls falling short 4-1. Their final placing was 8th place out of 24 teams! Basketball: Senior Girls

deep to pull this game out of the bag. After pool play, the boys were sitting pretty with an impressive 3 from 3 record. A quarter –final 3-1 victory against Sacred Heart saw the boys marching into the semifinals against Hillcrest High on a high. However, a head injury to key player and team captain Tilo Seltner Jones saw the boys having to battle a man light. The challenge was a little too much for the boys, and they fell 3-1. This led to a local rival challenge against Mt Albert Grammar in the 3rd/4th place final. The boys had their final say in an impressive tournament, in which they won six games and lost only one game, and ended with a victory over rivals, Mt Albert Grammar, to take the bronze! FOOTBALL (cont) 1st XI Boys A tough start to the Lotto Premier Tournament down in Christchurch for the 1st XI Football Boys saw them fall to Kings High in their first match, 5-0. All scheduled second round games had been postponed due to terrible weather conditions so the boys looked forward to bouncing back against Napier Boys. A 0-0 draw against Napier Boys was followed by another goalless draw against Nelson Boys. After pool play, the boys faced Cashmere, and a close 3-2 defeat saw the boys match up against Francis Douglas in the 29th place semi-finals. A close encounter ended in a penalty shootout defeat, and a 6-2 loss to New Plymouth rounded off a very difficult tournament amongst the top teams in the country. Junior Boys The Junior Boys lost 3-1 against Tauranga Boys, but bounced back with a whopping 11-0 victory against Whakatane. A 0-0 draw against Napier Boys set the boys up against Gisborne. A close defeat, 2-1 didn’t down the boys' morale as they regrouped and came out with a whopping 7-0 win against Tauranga Boys Croatia. The boys then played against Palmerston North Boys in the 9th place final. A comprehensive 3-1 victory rounded off their tournament.

HOCKEY 1st XI Boys The 1st XI Boys started the Mayhill Cup down in Rotorua on a high, with a comprehensive 5-0 victory against Havelock North High School. The boys then came away with their second victory of the tournament, beating Botany Downs 2-0. The team went on to defeat Mahurangi College in a tense and exciting match. They trailed 1-nil, but scored with ten minutes left to go to draw the game. Hersh Patel then got his stick to a flyer from Lewis Rose, delivered from half way, which put them ahead to secure the game 2-1. The boys really dug
1st XI Girls Hockey The 1st XI Girls attended the NZSS Chica Gilmer Tournament at Pukekohe. Avondale College defeated Pukekohe High School on the last day to come the 15th overall. The girls put in an outstanding effort for their last game, winning 4-0. MVP for Avondale was Scarlett Giffin Munn who played brilliant, consistant hockey throughout the busy week. Picking up Player of the Day awards were Jordan Phillips, Grace CarrShepheard, Jayla Fletcher, Renee Fowler and Scarlett Giffin Munn.

The Premier Girls had a remarkable tournament, winning all but one game. They ended the UNISS Competition in 2nd place in the B Grade, winning promotion to the 2019 A Grade competition. Throughout the course of the competition they beat Glendowie, Mahurangi, Western Springs, Waitakere, Whangarei Girls and Tauranga Girls to obtain a finals position. Their game against McAuley College was very close, point for point all the way through. They fought very hard, but McAuley managed to secure the game in the end, 39-33. The team ought to be very proud of themselves and all the achievements they have accomplished this year. We look forward to following them as they compete in the A Grade Division next year. A special mention also goes out to Grace Nweke who obtained a spot in the B Grade Tournament Team – one of ten players out of a pool of 32 teams, for her outstanding play in the GS position. Congratulations, Grace, and all the team!
TTCF ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIPS Due to the generosity of The Trusts Community Foundation we are able to award 39 x $2000 scholarships. These scholarships are available for students (permanent New Zealand residents) going on to study at university, polytech or private training institutes in 2019. The scholarship can be used for course fees, digital equipment, textbooks/stationery and university accommodation. Applicants must have a good academic record and have made a contribution to school and/ or the local community. Application forms are available from the Careers Department or can be downloaded from the intranet. Applications close on Tuesday 18 September.
CAREERS NOTICE
SWIMMING The Auckland Swimming Association Short Course Championships were held from Friday 7 to Sunday 9 September. Three of Avondale College’s top swimmers placed in the top three for their various events – Lucy Makaea competed in the Girls 17 and over age group and won gold in 400m Freestyle, 200m Freestyle and 100m Butterfly, as well as winning a Bronze in the 100m Freestyle. Ikko Shibuya also competed in the Boys 17 and over age group and won Gold in the 400m Freestyle, Silver in the 50m Butterfly, and Bronze in the 50m Freestyle, 100m Freestyle and 100m Butterfly. Our last competitor, Alex Dunkley won a Bronze in the 1500m Freestyle and 800m Freestyle in the Year 13 and 14 age group. Congratulations to you all on your excellent achievements!
WEIGHTLIFTING Congratulations to Kanah Andrews Nahu for winning Gold at the NZSS Olympic Weightlifting Champions over the weekend. Kanah won the Snatch and the Clean and Jerk, lifting a total weight of 198kg breaking the Youth and junior records. Also a big congratulations to Sophie Howsam who finished in 2nd in the U15 competition.
Employers are beginning to contact careers with full time job opportunities. We currently have apprenticeship opportunities in building, electrical and drainlaying areas. TAUREWA CAMP 2018 Year 10, Year 12 and Year 13 students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp. We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa Camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure. Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to tell their parents early that their camps are coming up this year.
