B STAND UP STAND OUT The next generation of music stars were on display at the finals of Stand Up Stand Out; Auckland’s premier secondary school music and dance competition on Saturday, with Avondale College's Maurice and the Men taking out the band category for 2018!

Amidst the exceptional talent on display at the finals were six entries from Avondale College who had emerged from more than 1000 secondary school entrants amidst the intense competition of the heats and semi-finals.

The judging panel – Cherie Mathieson, Brandon Haru, Joash Fahitua and Antonio Bukhar – had a challenging time selecting the winners, but Avondale College was named in the top two of three categories:

Stand Up Stand Out was presented by Auckland Council and supported by Flava.

TERM 3 WEEK 7 5 September 2018

TTCF ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIPS Due to the generosity of The Trusts Community Foundation we are able to award 39 x $2000 scholarships. These scholarships are available for students (permanent New Zealand residents) going on to study at university, polytech or private training institutes in 2019.

The scholarship can be used for course fees, digital equipment, textbooks/stationery and university accommodation.

Applicants must have a good academic record and have made a contribution to school and/or the local community.

Application forms are available from the Careers Department or can be downloaded from the intranet. Applications close on Tuesday 18 September.

Gateway is an opportunity for Year 12 & 13 students to have work experience in a career of their choice. We will place them with a company for 5-10 days, to see if it’s the career for them. Each student can also gain, on average, 20 NZQA credits while being on the Gateway programme.

If your child is thinking about a career and they would like to give it a go, please collect a form from Mrs Lee in the Careers Department.

Avondale College’s Senior Report Evening will be held on 25 September, in the College Atrium from 4.30pm to 7.00pm, giving parents the opportunity to meet with teachers to discuss the progress of their child.

The online booking facility for this evening will be available on Family Connection from Sunday 9 September until Sunday 23 September. Once bookings close, appointments can only be made manually by students using the form posted out with the report.

STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE ELECTIONS 2018

A very special evening was held in the Avondale College library last night, to celebrate and support the ongoing success of our Māori students.

Guests were welcomed by a powhiri held in the atrium, and then enjoyed a meal together in the library. Student leaders spoke about their experience of success at College, and this was followed by robust discussion around how the success of our Māori students can be further supported by the school, their families and the community.

We were particularly pleased to welcome Matua Warahi Paki and his wife Linda to the event. Warahi will be working with the school in the role of kaumatua, as we seek to further support our Māori students.

Many thanks to all who were part of this engaging and positive evening!

SPORTS REPORT Monday 27th August – Sunday 2nd September

BADMINTON

The Senior Girls A defeated St Peters 3, 5-1; and the Senior Boys A also won 5-1 against Auckland Grammar 3 on Friday 31st August.

The Senior Girls B side drew 3-3 against St Peters 1; however, they lost the game on points.

The Senior B Boys won 5-1 against St Cuthberts 2.

CYCLING

Paige Weir placed fourth in the Auckland Mountain Bike Series final race, which was held at Woodhill on Sunday 2 September. Over the course of the five races her points accumulated and she placed fourth overall in the Auckland MTB series. She was not far off third place, falling short by only a few points. We look forward to following her progress as she competes in a final competition which will be held in October - the North Island School race. All the best, Paige!

NETBALL

Our Premier Netball team won an outstanding victory in the finals of the Western Zone competition at Te Pai Courts, defeating Waitakere College 41-28 to win the gold medal!

Congratulations to all girls involved, and to Coach Rachel Rasmussen and the management team on achieving such a great victory.

ROAD RACE

Joanna Poland continues to excel in her running events. She competed in the New Zealand Athletics Road Race Championships in Cambridge on Sunday 2 September, where a fantastic effort on her part saw her place third in the U18 Women’s Division!

RUGBY UNION

Saturday 1st September saw the Under 15 Boys play Otahuhu College in the grade final. From kick-off the game was a close affair, with Avondale enjoying large chunks of territory but unable to put any points on the board. Otahuhu scored first with a try in the corner and backed it up with a converted try not long afterwards to build a 12-0 lead. On the last play of the half Avondale was hot on attack with a great line break from Casey Wills and halfback Lech Ulberg Lo-Tam crashing over from close range, which meant they went into halftime 7-12 down. Avondale lifted the tempo in the second half which resulted in a great team try finished by winger Key Nuuola in the corner to level the score 12-12. Otahuhu were next to score, pulling ahead 17-12 before Ola Hoeft pulled off some individual brilliance by intercepting an Otahuhu pass and scoring beside the post to give Avondale the lead, 19-17, with eight minutes to go. The final minutes were very tense, with possession flipping numerous times. Otahuhu was awarded a penalty on the last play of the game, which was successfully kicked for a heart breaking 19-20 loss. This was a tough result for the team but they can be proud of the heart displayed throughout the match and season!

TAUREWA CAMP 2018 Year 10, Year 12 and Year 13 students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp.

We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa Camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure.

Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to tell their parents early that their camps are coming up this year.
