B NETBALL CHAMPIONS! Our Premier Netball team won an outstanding victory in the finals of the Western Zone competition at Te Pai Courts last night, defeating Waitakere College 41-28 to win the gold medal! Congratulations to all girls involved, and to coach Rachel Rasmussen and the management team on achieving such a great victory. We wish them all the best for their upcoming tournament in Tauranga next week!

Out of more than 120 teams from over sixty schools, a team of four Year 10 Avondale College students claimed sixth place at the Mathex Competition last week! Hundreds of enthusiastic and talented young mathematicians took part in the annual competition held at the Barfoot and Thompson Stadium on Wednesday 22nd August. Students had to answer as many of the 20 questions as possible in a half-hour time period, with a maximum score of 100. The questions contained a mixture of problem-solving, lateral-thinking and mathematical knowledge skills, and encouraged students to collaborate on strategies and work together as a team. Avondale College entered two Year 9 and two Year 10 teams, with both of our Year 9 teams putting in very respectable performances, scoring around the 50 point mark, which meant they ranked in the middle of the teams. One of our Year 10 teams also managed a similar score and position, which once again was very commendable, given such tricky questions under such time pressure. However, the Year 10 team of Abigail Shin-Kelso, Aldous Schollum, Victor Bao and Atul Kodla (runner), put in a truly outstanding performance, managing to score an incredible 80 points! This placed them 6th, out of the 120 plus teams, and they were only a solitary question away from a Top 3 finish. This was a great result - well done, team!

GATEWAY Gateway 2019 applications are now open! Gateway is an opportunity for Year 12 & 13 students to have work experience in a career of their choice. We will place them with a company for 5-10 days, to see if it’s the career for them. Each student can also gain, on average, 20 NZQA credits while being on the Gateway programme. FOOTBALL
The 1st XI Girls lost 2-0 against Takapuna in their last game of the season. The Junior Premier Girls played Westlake Girls in their final match of the season. After extra time, in a thriller, we won 2-1 in difficult conditions. The girls had a lot of chances in the first half but couldn’t quite take any of them. Westlake scored and Yada Phimsee responded with a good goal. With a minute of extra time left, Mia Price popped up and scored the winner. Zuhenna Mohammed and Joanna Poland were both excellent. It was a good way to finish the season! The 1st XI Boys lost 1-0 against Westlake Boys. The Senior 2nd XI Boys Football Team lost 9-2 against Westlake Boys 2nd XI. The Year 10 A Boys lost 3-1 against Auckland Grammar A. The Year 9 boys did very well, getting their first win. Avondale scored first after capitalising on a mistake at St Kentigern's back. The opposition then went on to score a nice goal to equalise at a later point in the first half. Early in the second half a good run by one of our midfielders saw him score, bringing the final result to a 2-1 win to Avondale.
HOCKEY
The 1st XI Girls lost 4-1 against Mt Albert Grammar's 1st XI, in their final game of the regular season. The girls finished 4th overall in their respective grade. The 1st XI Boys hockey side played Mt Albert Grammar in the Super City Hockey Boys final. It was a battle to the end on a cold night at the AGS turf. The fight for first place: the epic tale of beating a foe that had throughout the season dogged our every move. We had the knowledge of meeting our opponents, Mt Albert Grammar School, and only drawing each outing. Being first in the Hockey SuperCity: Boys A1 (Tier 2) league meant that everyone was out to beat us. Hersh Patel deflected a ripper of a cross from Lewis Rose 22 minutes into the first half: 1-nil to Avondale. Seven minutes later MAGS were awarded a penalty stroke and they slotted it in to even the score 1-all going into half-time. Three minutes into the second half we were awarded a penalty corner at which our captain, Tilo SeltnerJones, executed a beautiful drag flick to drive us into the lead 2-1. Scintillating is one word to describe the game. The hard work the team put in even with our goalie being given a two minute green card with eight minutes to go in the second half paid off as the team absorbed the pressure. Player of the Day had to go to both Zach Giffin-Munn and Alex Stenberg for both stepping up on defence and attack, taking it to the opposition the whole game. MAGS were persistently on attack and came up with another penalty stroke with one minute and five seconds left! Nikolas Whitehead impressively kept MAGS scoreless in the second half by saving that stroke. Our boys held on and came away with a well-deserved season win and a gold medal with a 2-1 victory! The team would like to thank all
1st XI Boys Hockey team This season, the U15 Boys have had the better of St Peters' boys, and despite going into the match without our regular keeper or a reserve bench for the first time this season, the boys were in good spirits. Nathan Ellis (Player of the Day) and Dylan Richards had great games and did all they could to help the team. It was nil-all at half time, but a goal by Hersh Patel in the second half broke the deadlock. However, St Peters equalised with three minutes to play. Game went to strokes, and our boys lost 3-4 to finish sixth.
NETBALL
Avondale College Senior Netball Results: The Premier 1 Netball team defeated Massey Prem 1 in the Semi Finals 43-33. It was an extremely exciting game, with a big crowd and a few nerves on show! We had a slow start and Massey caught us off guard - and we went into the third quarter down by eight: 16-24. With a slight reshuffle in personnel we were able to regroup and refocus on our game plan and processes and ended up winning 44-33 and restricting them only to nine goals in the whole second half whilst scoring 28 goals ourselves. The girls showed determination, resilience and composure as they chipped away at the eight point deficit to win the game in style! The Premier 2 Netball team won 33-20 against Massey Premier 2. This was another awesome finish to the season. With players injured and unavailable, the bare seven played with flare, patience and shooting accuracy to make progress each quarter, and they led throughout the game to secure third place in their grade. It was another win for Senior Silver who placed first in their grade. At the three quarter mark, the margin was at least ten up and the team was beginning to gain more confidence with the flow and speed through court coming easily on attack, and with plenty of turnover ball from the defensive end. The final score: Senior Silver 20-8 Green Bay B. Senior White have been solid all year and have gone through their season undefeated. They played in the finals of the Senior C Grade competition against Rutherford Blue and held form, winning by almost 20 points. Senior White ended up winning their grade for the third straight year. Congratulations to these girls for their awesome achievement.

Avondale College Junior Netball Results: Year 10 Black lost 36-19 against St Dominics A in their final. The Avondale team had two great quarters, but sadly couldn't match the brilliance of their opponents. Player of the Day went to Izzy Simmons (GD/GK) for some awesome intercepts. Final placing: 2nd place in Grade A. Year 10 Silver lost 33-5 against Lynfield White. With one player down for half of the game and against a much stronger side, the Avondale team found this game a difficult one. The defenders were put through their paces, but weren't able to keep Lynfield out of their goal circle. Players of the Day: Grace King (WA) and Vasharny Tarawa-Herlihy (GS/GA). Final placing: 4th place in Grade. Year 9 Silver lost 16 - 14 against Henderson Maroon. Year 9 Bronze lost 11-21 against Green Bay B.
ROAD RACE Congratulations to our Year 10 superstar runner Joanna Poland, who won the Auckland Secondary Schools Intermediate Girls 4km Road Race Championships in the pouring rain and howling wind out at Pullman Park, Takanini. This was an outstanding result! 1st Avondale College; 2nd Baradene School; 3rd Macleans College.

RUGBY UNION With the season almost over the Under 15 Rugby boys hosted a door-die semi-final match against Tangaroa College. Avondale took an early lead through a penalty goal from Isimasi Tavae who followed this up with a try in the corner that he later converted. Tangaroa scored a try in the last few minutes of the first half, with Avondale taking a narrow 10-5 lead into half time. Going into the wind in the second half Avondale played some excellent rugby, with an early try to fullback Nathaniel Roma. Isimasi followed this up with his second try and a penalty goal to give the home side a solid 23-5 lead. On the last play of the game, captain Hayden Warrington crashed over from close range to seal the win 28-5, and earning a spot in the final next week at Mt Wellington War Memorial Reserve.

Paige Weir had a great race, coming 3rd in the fourth bike race in the Auckland series held at Waitawa Regional Park on Sunday 19 August. The trails were muddy and slippery so it was a very difficult race and a good result for Paige.

TAUREWA CAMP 2018 Year 10, Year 12 and Year 13 students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp.
