B YOUNG REPORTERS FOR THE ENVIRONMENT (YRE) PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION Several members of the Environmental Council are taking part in the YRE photography competition run by Keep New Zealand Beautiful (KNZB). The competition aims to empower young people to take a stand on environmental issues they feel strongly about and to give them a platform to articulate these issues. This year's campaign focused on changing the long-term behaviour of young people in relation to the reduction of litter. Congratulations to Christine Yu, Zoe Smith, Siddharth Sheth and Malisha Munidasa on their entries pictured below. A huge thanks must also go to the entire Environmental Council for their continued efforts around the reduction of litter in our school and wider community.

We will place them with a company for 5-10 days, to see if it’s the career for them. Each student can also gain, on average, 20 NZQA credits while being on the Gateway programme. EXAM STUDY IN THE LIBRARY During senior exam week the college library is a practical choice for senior student who wish to study during school hours. To create a positive and productive study environment for everyone, students are asked to study individually, quietly and to consider others. In order to maintain the quiet study atmosphere, 30 minutes before an exam it will be exit only from the library, there will be no entry to the library during this time. Students need to make note of this 30 minute time period and plan their arrival time and study breaks accordingly. Study breaks give students the opportunity to eat and drink, socialise, get some fresh air and relax their mind.

BARISTAS IN TRAINING Our Level 2 Hospitality students gave staff a real treat last week as they worked towards gaining four credits for the standard: 'Demonstrate knowledge of commercial espresso coffee equipment and prepare espresso beverages under supervision'. The students had to make at least three different beverages, and use different types of milk - and did such a great job that customer feedback suggests this standard should be assessed every week!

Supervisors need to be fluent in English and be able to supervise a room full of students. A high level of integrity is required. The Senior Girls A team lost their game on Friday 17 August, 4-2, against Auckland Grammar 2. Our Senior B Girls team lost to Selwyn College, 1-5. The Senior B Boys team defeated Glendowie 2, 2-4.
BASKETBALL
The Junior A Boys team lost to Liston A in a closely fought match, 42-49. Our Premier Boys Basketball team played their final match of the season against St Kentigern College on Wednesday 15 August. Our boys were four points down at the end of the third quarter, contesting everything and embodying every HEART value. In the fourth quarter St Kentigern couldn’t miss and nailed a number of consecutive 3-pointers to stretch their lead. It proved too much for our boys, who went down by about 20 points. The team showed tenacity and endeavor and played right through to the final buzzer. Final score: 75-96.
FOOTBALL
1st XI Girls lost 3-1 to Botany Downs. The Junior Girls team lost against Diocesan, 4-0. Our Year 9 Boys team lost to Mt Albert Victory, 7-2. The Year 10 B Boys had an awesome game, beating Rutherford B, 3-1. We ended the season fourth overall in the 14th Grade West B competition. The Senior 2nd XI Boys Football team lost 5-1 against St Kentigern 2nd XI side. The 1st XI Boys also lost to St Kentigern’s 1st XI side, 3-0.
HOCKEY
Our U15 Girls side lost against Macleans College. The game ended in a 1-1 draw, but Macleans went on to win 2-1 after penalty strokes! The U15 Boys team won 5-2 against Auckland Grammar. They placed 6th in the Auckland U15 A Grade competition. The 1st XI Boys Hockey side won their semi-final match against Orewa, 4-0. The boys are now into the final against Mt Albert Grammar on Thursday 23rd August, 7pm at Auckland Grammar School. All support is welcomed as we try and take out the Auckland Supercity Boys’ A1 Grade. The 1st XI Girls lost 7-0 against Pakuranga College.

Avondale College Senior Netball Results: Premier 1 defeated Lynfield Prem 1 in the quarter finals, 49-37. Premier 2 lost 27-25 in a closely fought semi-final against St Dominic’s Development Senior Silver defeated Green Bay C in a semi-finals match, 24-4, in the Senior E Grade Senior White won 21-8 against Waitakere Senior B in their Senior C Grade semi-final Senior Gold won by default against TKKM o Hoani Waititi. Avondale College Junior Netball Results: Year 10 Black defeated Lynfield Gold in their Year 10 A grade semi-final, 32-29. Player of the Day: Monique Compain. Year 10 Gold lost to Western Springs Parera 25-28 in a very close game. Player of the Day: Morgan Manners. Year 10 Silver were defeated in their game against Rutherford Gold, 18-22. Player of the Day: Fantasia Ahuvale. Year 10 Bronze lost 6-21 against Henderson Yellow. Player of the Day: Riley Watson. Year 9 Black lost to Massey A, 28-18. Player of the Day: Sharla-Rose Heritage. Year 9 Gold lost in a 1-point game against Rutherford A; final score: 23-24. Year 9 Silver won 16-11 against Lynfield White. Player of the Day: Faith Tamatoa. Year 9 Bronze defeated Rutherford Gold 27-11. Players of the Day were Diana Fareni and Namita Misherwan.

RUGBY LEAGUE
The 1st XIII Boys played Southern Cross in their last game of the season for 5th spot. The boys fell short, 30-16, in the end but are proud of their season and look forward to doing battle in the upcoming winter tournament!
RUGBY UNION
The U15 boys finished the regular season first in their pool, resulting in a home quarter-final against Mangere College. Avondale started the game well, playing a structured brand of rugby and took the lead through a try to Lech Ulberg Lo-Tam from a well-executed scrum move. The home team scored next through a penalty try when a maul close to the try line was illegally interfered with by the opposition. On the last play of the first half Mangere crashed over close to the posts to close the gap, with Avondale leading at half time 12-7. The away team stepped up in the second half, taking advantage of their size with several strong runs and tackles where Avondale had to work hard to keep them out of their end zone. Another lineout maul close to the Mangere try line resulted in a try to Bradley Tinielu pushing the lead out to 17-7. However, the opposition struck back quickly to narrow the gap down to 17-12. A well struck penalty goal from Isimasi Tavae pushed Avondale back into the lead 20-12, where the score finished. The result means a home semi-final this Saturday morning. Final score: 20-12 to Avondale.

TAUREWA CAMP 2018 Year 10, Year 12 and Year 13 students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp. We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa Camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure. Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to tell their parents early that their camps are coming up this year.
