B SENIOR EXAMS

Friday 17 August - Friday 24 August During this time all of our senior students, with the exception of those in Learning Support (Class 2), Immersion, and the Transition classes, will be granted study leave to prepare for their examinations.

Please note, that due to internal assessment components, not all subjects are examined during this upcoming week.

It is compulsory for students to attend their exams as per the examination timetable on page 8. Junior students attend classes as normal.

KBB MUSIC FESTIVAL One hundred and twenty Avondale College students took to the stage at the KBB Music Festival last week.

Held at the Holy Trinity Cathedral and St Mary's Church in Parnell, four Avondale College groups performed in non-competitive and competitive categories.

Our Taikaka Orchestra were entered non-competitively, but our other three groups were awarded Silver and Bronze awards for their performances.

In addition to their Silver Award, our String Ensemble also was awarded the prize for the best performance of a work in an "other" style for their Danish Reels.

Our Big Band also was presented with a Silver Award, and our Symphony Orchestra of 53 students received a Bronze Award.

Congratulations to all students and staff who took part - this was a wonderful culmination of many months' hard work.

STAND UP STAND OUT From one thousand entries this year, six Avondale College acts have made it into the finals of the Auckland-wide Stand Up Stand Out performing arts competition!

Fifteen of our groups entered the competition this year and went through a series of heats to be selected for the final performance event.

Avondale College will be represented in all five categories this year, and we have more finalists than any other school!

AUCKLAND JAZZ COMPETITION With the conclusion of the Aucklandwide Secondary Schools Jazz Competition last weekend, we were delighted that Avondale College groups were awarded silver and bronze awards for their performances.

Congratulations to Head of Jazz Mr Robinson and our Blue Note Combo who received a Silver Award, the Avondale Jazz Combo (Silver) and the 52nd Street combo (a junior combo) who were awarded Bronze.

EXAM STUDY IN THE LIBRARY During senior exam week the college library is a practical choice for senior student who wish to study during school hours.

To create a positive and productive study environment for everyone, students are asked to study individually, quietly and to consider others.

In order to maintain the quiet study atmosphere, 30 minutes before an exam it will be exit only from the library, there will be no entry to the library during this time.

Students need to make note of this 30 minute time period and plan their arrival time and study breaks accordingly.

Study breaks give students the opportunity to: eat & drink, socialize, get some fresh air and relax their mind.

The Senior Boys and Girls A teams both won their games on Friday 10th August. Senior Boys A defeated ACG Parnell 6-0, and the Senior Girls beat St Cuthberts, 6-0.

Our Senior B Girls team defeated St Peters A, 6-0.

The Senior B Boys team lost 3-6 against Auckland Grammar 1.

and opening up options for him both inside the key and outside on the 3-point line. He opted to hit Mohammed Joshua, who banked the three with five seconds left on the clock! Good defence in the backcourt gave us the ball and we ran it out until the final buzzer: final score 42-41. Standout players for the night were Praveen Hewawasam and Pearson Kirkwood; their last games for Avondale as both are leaving at the end of the year. It’s been an honour, boys!

The Premier Girls team had two games this week. They played Diocesan on Monday 6 July and Botany Downs on Friday 10 August.

The game against Diocesan was an exciting match. We held the lead the entire game, but Diocesan didn’t give up. With a few open three’s they managed to pull a double-digit lead back to one point in the last quarter. Our girls remained consistent and knocked down shots when it really counted, ending the game 46-50 to us. A standout performance was given by Maclani Michael who put up five 3-pointers and scored 22 points. Also, a big defensive effort was given by Tikenati Raion and Chelsey Whiu who held their best player to only a few baskets.

Our second game against Botany Downs was another solid performance. We had played Botany Downs (who sit second in the Senior A Grade) earlier in the season and had lost by over 20 points.

This seemed to have no effect on the way the girls went out to play.

The game started out quietly with only a few points scored by both teams; however, once both teams got into the swing of things, the game was neck and neck. In the third quarter we managed to secure a couple of fast break lay ups and make a few stops; this broke Botany’s confidence as they attempted to fight back to regain the lead. Our 2-3 defence, along with some solid leadership by point guard Mercy Lemisio, kept our team in control, ending the game 30-43. What a way to finish out the season! We look forward to competing at the upcoming Premierships to be held at the North Shore Event's Centre from Wednesday 5 September to Saturday 8 September.

Our Premier Boys Basketball team lost 68-112 against Rangitoto College on Monday 6 July, but the team managed to change things up in their second match of the week against St Peters. This game was a must-win match! To keep the dream of staying in the Premier grade alive, we had to beat St Peters by a significant margin. The team fell nothing short of amazing as the boys rose to the occasion once again.

The team put out an outstanding performance, smashing St Peters 95-68. Special mention must be made of point guard, Jack Childs, who knocked down seven 3-pointers and achieved 30 points, along with team mate, Jaga Mete, who put up another 40 point plus performance.

The team will now go into their final match of the season - another must-win game against St Kentigern College at 5pm on Wednesday 15 August at Avondale College. All support is welcomed!

The U19 Boys team defeated Onehunga High, 42-41. It was a tough night in the office for the U19s, facing off against possibly the best defence the boys have faced all season. With Onehunga constantly hounding the ball, the boys had a one point lead going into the second half, with Onehunga gaining an 8 point lead to close the third.

Fourth quarter, we battled to close the gap, pulling their lead down to two. With 35 seconds on the clock, the scores were 39-41 to them.

Onehunga had the ball, we ran our press, held them in the backcourt, and there was a turnover: Avondale ball. With 37 seconds on the clock, Zakiah Puia slowed the ball right down, watching the time count down. At the 12 second mark, he called Hi Lo, ran off the screen set

The 1st XI Girls lost 5-0 against a strong St Kentigern Girls' side.

The 2nd XI Girls Football team played at Waitakere College for their last game this season. Avondale were down 1-0 within the first few minutes, but a breakaway run by Kalee O’Sullivan levelled the match at 1-1. Avondale gained in confidence as Player of the Day Sara Larsen showed her impressive skills in midfield and also scored two long range goals. Erika Engwall extended Avondale’s lead to 4-1 at halftime.

In the second half, Waitakere came in with fighting spirits and many shots at goal but were denied by Avondale’s star goalkeeper Naheeda Qari who made a few spectacular saves and was applauded by everyone on the sidelines, including the Waitakere supporters. Kalee O’Sullivan scored her second goal to give Avondale a win and a final score of 5-1. This was a well-deserved victory and reflective of how the team has improved with each game this season.

The Junior Girls team lost 6-1 against Epsom Girls.

The 1st XI Boys lost 3-1 against St Peters.

The 2nd XI Boys Football Team lost 5-2 against St Peters 2nd XI. Our Year 10A Boys won 1-0 against Howick A. The Year 10B Boys won 2-1 against Massey.

Our Year 9 Boys team lost 2-1 against Rosmini Star in their mid-week catch up game and also lost 10-1 against Westlake Boys A1 team over the weekend.

HOCKEY

The 1st XI Girls defeated Botany Downs, 4-1.

Our U15 Girls side defeated Epsom Girls Grammar 2-0.

The U15 Boys team won 7-1 against Auckland Grammar.

Undefeated! That word inspires the confidence we need going into the next two weeks - two more rounds - semis and finals! Here's to topping off an all-around huge team effort for the whole season - kia kaha, lads!

The game on Wednesday was a high intensity, high octane game (as is any clash against our neighbours Mt Albert Grammar). Even as the rain came down, the clouds of what was happening on the pitch had a dark foreboding as our two goal lead deteriorated to 2-all. With dogged determination we pulled a goal ahead. We onlookers had to hold our breath on the sideline, gripped with tentacles of fear and disbelief as MAGS started to make their comeback and we did not seem to be able to step up to stop them or slow them down as they scored in quick succession to make it 4-3 against us. We had been running hard and making tough gains, but the opposition seemed to sense our tiredness and ran lines that used the full width of the pitch, moving through us like a hot knife slicing through butter. The team put a lot of effort out on the turf and Player of the Day Jappreet Kullar kept his feet and head in the game at the back to support the effort of our attack. In the dying seconds of the game we were awarded an attacking penalty corner which we took full advantage of and slotted the tying goal. This was a heart-palpitating last pool game to the very end for a 4-all draw.

LACROSSE

Auckland Secondary Schools Lacrosse Championships End of Season Lacrosse Tournament – Premier Division An 11th hour withdrawal by Westlake Girls left five teams competing in the end of season one day tournament, Premier Division, held at College Rifles on the 8th of August, one of which was our own team from Avondale College. With two key players down, it was always going to be a testing day.

A ‘bye’ in the first round was followed by a tough match against Mount Albert (6-3 to MAGS), and then a draw with Girls Diocesan (4-4). A break (where the all-important home baking was brought out!) led to another loss against Mt Roskill Grammar (7-0 to MRG) and then yet another loss against Epsom Girls (9-0 to EGGS).

By lunch it was time to re-group. More home baking and some serious talk took place. Clearly, something had a positive effect. We won 4-3 in the match for 4th/5th place against Diocesan and in a very exciting match for 3rd/4th place led for most of the game only going down by one goal to Mt Albert in the dying seconds, the final score being 7-6 to MAGS. It was a privilege to accompany the girls to their end-of-season tournament. Throughout the day the team constantly epitomised our school HEART values while showing great sportsmanship and competitiveness on the field. Farewell and best wishes to our Year 13 players who will be leaving at the end of this year, while the rest of the team (and their supporters) will no doubt be looking forward to another exciting season in 2019.

RUGBY UNION

The 2nd XV Boys lost to Sacred Heart 2B 7-13.

The Restricted Boys team lost to Sacred Heart 5B 26-7.

The Under 15 boys finished the regular season with a home match up against Kelston Boys. The Avondale team started strongly and continued the good play through the first half, taking a 13-0 lead into halftime via a penalty goal and tries to winger, Isireli Senibulu, and number 8, Fabian Malungahu. A further two tries were scored in the second half with Jayden Fatu-Uili sitting down and Fabian picking up a second touchdown. First five Isimasi Tavae slotted another penalty goal to finish the match 26-0 to Avondale. The team has yet to have a point scored against them in the three games played this term and finish 1st in their pool with a home quarter final to look forward to next weekend.

SQUASH

Senior A Girls lost 4-0 against Epsom Girls Grammar Gold.

Senior B Girls lost 3-1 against Orewa.

New Zealand Secondary Schools Squash Nationals The Nationals followed the best squash season since 2004, where the boys finished a very impressive 5th in the Premier division in Auckland. Kavel Mudaliar, Brandon Adonis, Vatsal Gajjar, Luke Gray, Plaeton Xavier and Owen McGrath all played their part in that success.

Going into the Squash Nationals in Palmerston North, Brandon Adonis had to withdraw because of an injury and Lewis Rose was overseas, which weakened the team and their initial placing, making the draw a tad harder. Leo Poliko stepped up late in the day, so the 'fab five' consisted of Kavel Mudaliar (1 and captain), Vatsal Gajjar (2), Plaeton Xavier (3), Luke Gray (4) and Leo Poliko (5). They were ably supported by coach and ex-student Ashton Matthee.

The Boys played five games in total during the tournament with 3 wins and 2 losses overall.

1st Game vs Hawera was a 3-2 loss. In the 2nd game the boys bounced back quickly with a 5-0 thumping of Marlborough College. The victory was short lived after another close 3-2 loss against St Pauls Collegiate; however, a comprehensive 5-0 victory against Rangotai saw the boys’ spirits lifted.

With a 3-2 win in their final match at almost 10pm on Saturday, the boys were done for the tournament. Their draw meant no Sunday morning matches - time to find some late dinner and celebrate a successful tournament.

At all times, the boys played with great spirit and showed the utmost respect. Unfortunately, their initial loss was extremely significant for their overall placing, and they ended up 31st (out of 34), which is where they had been seeded. However, 3 wins out of 5, is an impressive result and was a very positive experience. The fact that Kavel Mudaliar and Luke Gray were both undefeated for the whole tournament is also rather impressive. Kavel and Vatsal showed great leadership skills throughout and Ashton was a strong coach.

UNDERWATER HOCKEY

The Junior Open Underwater Hockey team lost 5-0 in both their match ups against Glendowie and Northcote Blue respectively.

RUGBY LEAGUE

The 1st XIII Boys played Manurewa High. The game was level 14-14 at the end of the second half, therefore we went into a sudden death overtime where the first team to score wins the game. We managed to score a try ending the game, 18-14. The boys now face Southern Cross in the Premier Cup Final!

A homestay family is expected to provide a clean and comfortable bedroom with bed, wardrobe (built-in or free-standing) and drawers, linen and towels, desk and lamp, heating in the room, meals and laundry.

TAUREWA CAMP 2018 Year 10, Year 12 and Year 13 students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp.

We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa Camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure.

Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to tell their parents early that their camps are coming up this year.
