Avondale College's Tristan Mona has risen to the very top of over 760,000 competitors worldwide to gain first place in the PowerPoint 2016 category of the 2018 Certiport Microsoft Office Specialist World Championship! It's an amazing achievement for the Year 11 student, who says the moment when his name was announced from front of the award ceremony was "unreal!" "Becoming the first ever New Zealander to reach a world placing in this competition is quite overwhelming, and perhaps the biggest moment in my life so far," he says. (continued on page 3)

"This feels to me like the first time in a while I’ve fulfilled the potential many saw in me in my primary school years and I’m excited to try and take it even further," he says. To win the competition, Tristan was faced with a 50 minute exam where he had to use all of his expert skills to recreate a series of slides, complete with transitions, animations and media. It was a challenging test, and Tristan left the room knowing he hadn't managed to fully complete the assignment, but hoping his submission was enough to make the months of training in the lead up to the competition worth it. "You always try to believe you have a chance to win it all," he says, "but there’s also the possibility lingering that someone bettered you in that room at the same time. I guess I’m just fortunate enough to have my best efforts produce what they did." Along with the world champion status, a gold medal and shining trophy, Tristan won an X-Box and US$7000 in prize money. Tristan says he is now encouraged to make the most of all the remaining opportunities offered by Avondale's Innovation Programme. He currently holds 22 internationally recognised industry certfications (in Microsoft Office, Adobe, IC3 and more), and is looking at furthering these qualifications as well as competing in the Microsoft Office Specialist Championship next year - in a different application!

FIVE TOP-10 IN WORLD FOR AVONDALE'S TEAM NZ The celebrations of Avondale College's success at the Microsoft Office Specialist World Championships continued yesterday with the announcement of the top ten placings for each of the categories. New Zealand featured five times in the top ten lists for the 2018 Championship - making it 17 times Avondale College students have placed in the top ten of the global competiton in the past five years! Congratulations to our Team New Zealand - this is an amazing achievement!

ROTORUA GEOGRAPHY TRIP
KATTI Programme for Year 11 students On Thursday 2 August eight Year 11 students attended the Year 11 KATTI Programme which was held on the Waipapa Marae at The University of Auckland. The Year 11 KATTI programme focuses on individual career planning. Students learn how to make appropriate subject choices for their preferred careers pathways. They consider the breadth of options available with each choice and learn processes that enable them to make informed decisions about their educational future. The programme is run by Maori Liaison officers from the tertiary institutions thoughout New Zealand and students have the opportunity to develop key contacts for future assistance. The students enjoyed their day and found it very informative for their career planning.
Eighty-four Geography students made the most of their trip to Rotorua last week, as part of their learning around tourism and its impact on the city. They visited key tourist destinations such as the Luge, the Agrodome and the Museum, with their experiences laying the groundwork for their ongoing coursework this term.
Auckland University Faculty of Education and Social Work Experience Day 2018 Ten of our Year 13 students had the opportunity to visit the Epsom Campus and discover what it is really like to study teaching (primary and early childhood), social work, sport or health and physical education at the University of Auckland. With practical activities, a campus tour, information on how to apply and insight into the support available, students came away with a better understanding of what their future study at a tertiary level could be like.
NEW ZEALAND DANCE COMPANY PERFORMS AT AVONDALE COLLEGE On Friday July 27th the Senior Dance and Dance Academy students joined with their peers from other local schools to attend a full-scale performance of TÄ maki Tour in our very own Theatre! The production, by the New Zealand Dance Company, featured eight short works created by choreographers and composers from throughout New Zealand. Following the performance the students had the opportunity to engage in a forum session with the company directors and dancers. Students took the opportunity to ask about the life of a dancer, the choreographic processes of the works, and the industry and university pathways of the company members.

YEAR 11 SELF PORTRAITS A very special art exhibition was displayed in the Atrium during several lunchtimes last week. This collection of self portraits had all achieved Excellence level in Year 11 NCEA Paint/ Print unit. The overall theme was self portrait with objects from the environment and the brief was to use compositional ideas from artist Olaf Hajik and experiment with different methods of paint application to create a range of paint surfaces. The students spent many many hours planning and creating these artworks, says Art teacher, Ms Ingrid Opera. "It was very confronting for the students to have to paint themselves, and to show their work to the whole school in the Atrium," she says. "They have really captured the diversity within Avondale College and their work really defies their age."

BADMINTON
The Senior Boys and Girls A teams both won their games 6-0 on Friday 3. Our Senior Girls team defeated St Peters 1 and our Senior Boys side defeated St Peters 2. Our Senior B Girls team lost to Lynfield College, 5-1. The Senior B Boys team also lost their game 5-1 against Diocesan.
BASKETBALL
The Junior Premier Girls side defeated Mt Roskill in their final game of the season, 49-16. They ended the year at the top of their pool, which was a great way to finish! The Premier Girls Basketball team had two games this week. They played Pakuranga College on Monday 30 July and Epsom Girls Grammar on Friday 3 August. Not being able to shake the holiday blues, the girls fell short to Pakuranga, 40-50, however, they managed to find better form as they played top-of-the-table, Epsom Girls. The game was neck-and-neck all the way until the third quarter, when Epsom made a break and we couldn’t peg the game back. The final score: 45-71 to Epsom. The Junior B Boys team lost 54-39 against Marcellin College. Our Junior A Boys lost to Massey in a close quarter finals match 49-37. They then went on to beat Mt Albert 2 on Wednesday 1 August. They will play for fifth place this coming week. The U19 Boys team beat Kelston 55-38. Our Premier Boys Basketball team played Westlake Boys’ High School on Friday 3 August, recording their first win of the season. Jaga Mete scored 46 points, including the final basket and free throw with seven seconds remaining. Avondale held on with Westlake missing their final shot to win 101-99. It was an outstanding team performance with every player contributing to a solid team effort. Other game highlights were an alley-oop from Tauhir Toyer to Jaga Mete which was finished with a crowd-raising dunk. Armand Donaldson, playing his final home game of the season, was as consistent as ever on the court, providing a steady hand and much needed defensive presence. At half time Doe Williams, who guided the team to the premier division, was courtside to support the team and presented Armand with his sports pin for service to premier basketball. The team now travel to St Kentigern College on Wednesday night and St Peter’s College on Friday to finish their season. Both games are at 7:30pm and all support is greatly appreciated!
FOOTBALL
The Junior Girls team had an outstanding game, defeating Howick College 18-0. The 2nd XI Girls Football team played at Rutherford College this week. Avondale dominated possession for the whole game and created many scoring opportunities early in the first half. With the game tied up 0-0 at halftime, Rutherford started the second half showing more aggression. Both teams created several scoring opportunities but failed to score, which resulted in a 0-0 draw. The girls have continued to improve every match and were able to showcase their passing skills in this match. Player of the day, Mrydhinyi Radha Krishnan, made some incredible runs up the left side of the field, beating the Rutherford defenders.
Our Premier Girls Football team played their first match of the APC Knock Out Cup on Wednesday afternoon against Diocesan. It was a beautiful afternoon for football and our Avondale girls were feeling positive despite having only 11 players and no substitutes. The first half saw Diocesan up 2-0 leading into half time but a run from Maclani Michael and fellow striker Che Stockenstroom secured Avondale's first goal for a score of 2-1 at half time. In the second half, Diocesan played defensively, attempting to keep Avondale out. A late corner ball played beautifully into the centre by Maclani Michael and a volley right in front of the goal from center mid-fielder Alyssa Jeffs, kept Avondale in the cup, finishing with a 2-2 result at half time. The girls, exhausted from a tough game, then stepped up to play extra time again with our strikers beating the Diocesan defence to come away with a 3-2 win. Special mention should be made of Ashtika Singh, our keeper, who played a great game with superb long range punts; Alix Mills who stepped up into a defensive position; and our Player of the Day, Kimberley Tasker, who played with tenacity the whole 50 minutes. Our Year 9 Boys team had a balanced game on Saturday 4 August. The opposition scored early, making it 1-0 in the first half. We held them to that and equalised in the beginning moments of the second half. Midway through the second half, as the boys began to feel their tiredness, the opposition slipped in two goals, sealing the fate of the match. However, the boys were able to contain the opposition and not allow them to run away with too many goals. At the after match debrief, their coach, Mark Carroll, thanked the team for their valiant efforts. Davion Tevi did a wonderful job as goal keeper – and in previous matches as well. Final score: 3-1 to Sacred Heart. The Year 10B Boys drew 5-5 against Henderson High School. Our Year 10A Boys lost 2-0 against St Kentigern College. They had a good game and are improving as a team. They showed great competitiveness in the first half, but lost shape in the second half, letting in a couple of easy goals. The Senior 2nd XI Boys Football team enjoyed their first sweet taste of victory this season on Saturday. They beat none other than competition leaders, Auckland Grammar. Both teams played hard, were well matched and provided an entertaining spectacle. The final score was 1-0, courtesy of a well-taken penalty by Ben Prince-Saxon in the first half. All the boys played well but there were some stand-out players: Hayden Farrell, on loan from the 1st XI and coming back from injury, plugged the holes in the defense; Atique Taib impressed in the midfield with some skillful dribbling. However, the man-of-the match was the stand-in goalkeeper, Ruben Poore. In the second half Grammar surged forward and applied pressure on Ruben and the defense. Ruben made a spectacular double-action scrambling save of what looked to be an almost certain Grammar goal. Shortly afterwards he saved a welltaken Grammar penalty. His great work inspired Avondale to victory and knocked the confidence out of Grammar. After a blistering start to Premier League life for the Avondale College Boys’ 1st XI Football team, a run of seven games without a win (five defeats and two draws) has put this season’s newly promoted side at risk of returning from whence they came. Every game from this point onward is a fight for survival, with 7th-placed St Peter's sitting only one point behind and ready to pass at any given opportunity. This made last week’s game against Auckland Grammar School an even tenser affair. A week of hard work on the training field and time in the classroom going over strategy was very much in order. The main focus this week: score more goals!

As the mantra goes, "hard work pays off" and last week it most certainly did! Avondale managed to dominate the game against AGS and win 4-1, thanks to a hat-trick of goals from the right boot of Aidan Carey and a fourth and final blow from the head of Amanuel Molla. From start to finish, the boys on the field showed the ability that we know they have had all season but at times have been unable to produce. This was by far their most impressive performance to date! Now the focus moves onto the next game against St Peter's who are hot on our heels after securing an impressive victory against Westlake Boys. This is a must win game. Let's hope the boys can replicate their performance of last week and give them a bit of breathing room above the drop-zone.
HOCKEY
Our U15 Girls side beat Botany Downs 6-0. The U15 Boys team lost to St Peters 4-1. The 1st XI Boys team had an amazing game against Orewa College on Wednesday 1 August. There was hunger from every player after the first half where we were ahead 1-0 at the break. From the start of the second half we poured on the pressure; and after an incredible crash ball by Zach Giffin-Munn into the attacking circle that was finished by a deft touch from Alex Stenberg slotting a brilliant field goal thirteen minutes into the second half, we mixed the game plan up. We allowed some injured players a break and got our backs and midfielders to get a taste up front which caused havoc with our opposition. The 'forwards' created multiple penalty corner opportunities which we turned into goals from some beautiful drag flicks and unselfish play by Tilo Selter-Jones and Alex Stenburg. The team played as a team and this showed in the resulting 5-0 win, with the help of our keeper, Nikolas Whitehead, keeping a clean sheet at our defensive end. Player of the Day, Sam Crutchley, had a consistent run, both defensively and turning around on attack. We absorbed pressure from Orewa College's attacks, got the defensive ball out wide and controlled our attack to come away with a well-deserved and pleasing team-effort win. Our last pool game before heading into the finals' week is here at home this afternoon at 4.50pm against our arch-rivals Mt Albert Grammar and we look forward to seeing many supporters coming along to cheer on our 1st XI boys.
LACROSSE
The Premier Lacrosse team lost to Westlake Girls, 3-10. Our Premier 2 team lost 11-13 to Mt Roskill Blue.

Player of the Day: Diana Fareni and Namita Misherwan Netball Combined Points Tournament Avondale College had three teams attend the Netball Combined Points Tournament last week on Wednesday 1 August, our top Year 9 and Year 10, alongside our Premier side. We are very proud of all the teams’ efforts; however, a big mention of our Premier side must be made, for their outstanding performance. Having been undefeated this season, the Premier Netball team were looking forward to some different challenges. The team was drawn in the same pool as Saint Kentigern College; current UNISS champions and runners-up at the 2017 NZ Secondary Schools competition who are currently placed second in the Auckland Premier competition. Drawing Saint Kentigern in the first game, our girls come out firing to quickly establish a 4-1 lead. The girls pressed on to a 6 point lead at half-time. Saint Kentigern started the second half with a lot of hustle and bustle, but our girls focused on their own game and went on to win the game 24-20. The team performed well under pressure and were humble in victory. Our second game was against Botany Downs; a team which plays in the Auckland Premier A competition. We won comfortably, 22-12. Our next game was against the Singapore U21 squad. This was a challenge for the team to play against older players; however, we fought hard and were able to win a low-scoring encounter, 13-8. We then went on to play the former powerhouse of Auckland Girls Grammar School. There was some extra motivation in this game, including our vice-captain having been a member of the AGGS Premier team last year. The Avondale girls put on a defensive masterclass to defeat AGGS 29-9. We then went on to beat Hillcrest from Hamilton in an easy win. The team finished at the top of their pool, thus qualifying for the quarter finals. We drew Westlake Girls in the quarter final, a top four team in the Auckland Premier 1 competition. Westlake jumped out to an early lead, but once again our team focused on their own game and through another fine defensive effort were able to wrestle a narrow lead at half-time. Our girls adjusted more quickly to the wet conditions and pushed on to win by 7 points. The margin was important as it determined whether we would have to play a semi-final or move directly into the final. By virtue of a draw between MAGS and One Tree Hill, we moved directly to the final to play the winner of EGGS and One Tree Hill. We faced EGGS, so far undefeated this year in the Auckland Premier competition, in the final. EGGS got away to an early lead, and whilst our girls adjusted and were able to narrow the margin, we ended up going down bravely by 8 points. The team can hold their heads high, having done themselves, their families, and Avondale College proud. We look forward to further success across the rest of the season and to a successful UNISS campaign in early September.

The 1st XIII Boys played Manurewa High School on Wednesday 1 August. Final score: 32-10 to Manurewa.
RUGBY UNION
1st XV Boys lost to St Pauls, 22-17. The Restricted Boys team lost to Whangaparaoa, 27-10. The Under 15 boys matched up with Mt Roskill Grammar in an away game which started under foggy conditions. Avondale dominated territory in the first half but wasted some good opportunities with some simple mistakes. A half time lead of 6-0 was the result of two successful penalty kicks from first-five Isimasi Tavae. Mt Roskill threw everything they had in the second half but were unable to break the defensive line which was led by captain Hayden Warrington and number 8 Fabian Malungahu. Ben Hickman scored the game’s lone try which was converted from the sideline by Isimasi who also added a further penalty goal. Final score: 16-0 to Avondale.
Senior A Boys defeated Macleans, 9-8. Senior A Girls drew 2-2 with Manurewa. Senior B Girls defeated Selwyn convincingly, 4-0. New Zealand Secondary Schools Squash Nationals The Avondale Premier Squash Boys side competed at the NZSS Squash Tournament held in Fielding, Palmerston North from Friday 3 August to Sunday 5 August. Kavel Mudaliar, Vatsal Gajjar, Plaeton Xavier, Luke Gray and Leo Poliko made up our team who competed at this competition. Overall, the boys played five games and we came away with three wins and two losses. Their efforts and performances were incredibly respectable, and they did the College proud with their attitude throughout. Special mention should be made of Kavel and Luke who went undefeated the entire tournament.
SWIMMING
Avondale College had four students participate in the Auckland Secondary Schools Individual Championships on Sunday 5 August. Vienna Samuels, Alex Dunkley, Bronwyn Buller and Whitney Dai all competed on our school’s behalf. Many of our students placed in the top ten in their events, alongside Alex Dunkley who managed to place 3rd in the 200m Butterfly for the Junior Boys division. Congratulations to all those who participated.
TAUREWA CAMP 2018 Year 10, Year 12 and Year 13 students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp. We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa Camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure. Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to tell their parents early that their camps are coming up this year.
