Avondale College is holding our annual Open Evening from 4.00pm to 7.00pm on Wednesday 1 August. This is when parents of prospective students are invited to view our school. Timetabled classes will finish at 12.30pm, to allow preparations for the evening. At this time your child will be released from class to go home. Buses have been rescheduled and will run at this earlier time. After school detentions will run from 12.35pm. There will be supervision available in the library for students whose parents are unable to accommodate this earlier finishing time. There are a number of students involved in Open Evening activities and their support of Avondale College is much appreciated.
AVONDALE WELCOMES DAITO BUNKA Last Saturday we welcomed the Japanese exchange group from Daito Bunka Dai-Ichi High School to Avondale College on the biennial student exchange. The Japanese students made an immediate impact on the College, performing in assembly on Monday. Along with attending class with their homestay student, the Daito Bunka group have visited Tree Adventures at Woodhill and are currently sightseeing in Rotorua. Their stay at Avondale continues with them attending class next week, providing the opportunity to experience New Zealand schooling and develop their English speaking skills.
NCEA FEES DUE: 17 AUG Fees are paid to Avondale College and must be paid, in full by 4:00pm, 17 August, 2018. If you do not meet this deadline then fees must be paid directly to NZQA. For details see www.nzqa.govt.nz. Fees received after 1 December will incur a $50 late charge, payable directly to NZQA. Paying your fees will enable your results to be recorded on your Record of Achievement and to receive any certificates.

FAMILY CONNECTION
AUCKLAND JAZZ COMPETITION The first heats of the Auckland Jazz Competition took place over the weekend, with 23 of our students performing in three different combos. Each band - the Avondale College Senior Combo, Avcol Blue Note Combo and the 52nd Street Combo - performed a 25 minute balanced jazz set featuring a wide variety of styles and genres. The announcement of which bands have been selected for the final on 11 August will be made on Sunday.
The Avondale Family Connection allows families to have direct access, through the internet, to a wide range of information about their child’s academic performance, attendance, activities, events, trips, parent/ teacher interview appointments and teacher only days. The information provided includes: Class allocations, timetables, class teachers, NCEA and Cambridge results, attendance data, detention records and assessment reports. MICROSOFT WORLD CHAMPS Our six national representatives competing at the Microsoft Office Specialist World Championships in the USA have now all finished their tests and are nervously awaiting the results! Director of Avondale's Innovation Programme, Mr Paul McClean said that the competition standard was noticeably more difficult this year, with many 'expert' level elements incorporated into the assessments. Many of the competitors are older than our students, as the competition age goes up to 22 years old, but despite this and the tense atmosphere in the lead up to the competition, our students came out of the exam rooms feeling that they had tackled the projects with agility and creativity. We are now eagerly awaiting the results of the top three champions in each application which will be announced tomorrow.

DANCE STUDENTS VISIT REST HOME
BAD DOG THROUGH TO FINALS OF ROCKQUEST
The Senior Contemporary Group spent an afternoon with residents of the Avondale Rest Home in Week 1 of the holidays. The Year 13 girls performed for the residents in the dementia ward as part of their annual "Shall We Dance?" event. The girls thoroughly enjoyed interacting with the residents and the staff, and all were impressed by their level of skill! Another highlight of the afternoon was working with the children from the Avondale College Early Childhood Centre, who performed a haka and selection of childhood songs for the audience. Congratulations and sincerest thanks to all involved.
Avondale's Indie alternative rock band 'Bad Dog' are through to the national finals of the Smokefree Rockquest! The trio of Joshua Parker, Maxwell Barrett and William Elliott had made it through to the top 100 bands throughout New Zealand last month, and after submitting a video of one of their original songs have now been selected as one of only six New Zealand bands to compete at the finals on 22 September! This is a fantastic achievement given the huge number of student bands who entered the competition - we wish them well as they prepare for the grand final!

BADMINTON
Both our Girls’ Badminton teams won 6-0 in their weekly fixtures this week. Senior Girls A won 6-0 against St Peters 1, whilst the Senior B Girls defeated Auckland Girls Gold. The Senior Boys’ sides also won 6-0 in their matches. Senior A Boys won 6-0 against Mt Albert, and the Senior B Boys defeated Glendowie.
Player of the day, Alex Stenburg, set the second half off to another good start scoring after six minutes and bringing up his hat trick. Some great pressure and rebounding in the attacking circle saw us score two more well-worked field goals. A phenomenal effort by our keeper Nikolas Whitehead has to be mentioned - he stopped a penalty stroke 13 minutes into the second half. This lifted the team's spirits, as did the final result - a 6-2 win against Westlake Boys 2nd XI.

The Senior A Girls lost 13-6 against Westlake Girls.
BASKETBALL
The Premier Boys team had a good game against Mt Albert Grammar School on Friday 27 July. They won the fourth quarter, but fell short throughout the other quarters, losing 86-70 in the end. In their first game back after the break, the U19 boys came away with a good win against Marcellin College. They got off to a slow start only to take an 18 point lead in the second quarter, before losing their the big lead towards the close of the third, with Marcellin playing a very physical game and forcing small mistakes. However, our boys knuckled down in the fourth quarter and kept the lead, with a final score of 47-44. Standout players were Tauhir Toyer, Jarome Tinielu and Pearson Kirkwood. The U17A Boys’ Basketball lost their playoff game against Auckland Grammar 52-36. The game was close throughout but with only six players, foul trouble and tired legs saw Grammar pull away in the final minutes to a comfortable win. The boys will now play a play-off game for 5th place.
FOOTBALL
The 2nd XI Girls’ Football team started the second round of their competition against St Dominic's College at home. St Dominic's College scored a goal in the opening few minutes of the match and Avondale College responded with Mayoora Nanthakumaran scoring an equalising goal minutes later. St Dominic's managed to score two more goals in the first half as Avondale were unable to capitialise on several goal scoring opportunities. In the second half, Avondale played with tenacity and no further goals were scored. Player of the Day was Lucy Constantine-Powles (Captain), who played extremely well in defence against the skilled strikers of St Dominics. Our 1st XI Boys’ team played some tough competition on Friday 27 July. They managed to keep the game close, the majority of the way through, until Macleans College went on a run. The final score was 4-1 to Macleans. The Year 10A Boys lost to Mt Albert Victory 3-1. The Year 10B Boys had a close match against Mt Albert Roar. They ended the game in a 4-4 draw. The Year 9 Boys lost their match against Macleans 4-2.

The 1st XIII Boys defeated Papatoetoe High School by two points in a close encounter. The final score was a 20-18 victory.
SPORTS FEES THANK YOU!
HOCKEY
The 1st XI Boys played Westlake 2nd XI. The game started with a hiss and a roar - our team slotting a field goal two and a half minutes in, after shutting down the opposition who started with the ball, then another goal from a penalty corner two minutes later and a third goal three minutes after that. The lads were on a roll and hungry to score. Impressively, our team kept their composure when obvious calls did not go their way. The opposition closed out the first half with a field goal slicing through our midfield and taking a quick penalty.
Thank you to those families who have paid their child's sports fees. A friendly reminder to those who have not yet paid, that these fees are now overdue.

RUGBY UNION Our 1st XV Boys had a close match on Saturday 28 July against Mt Roskill. However, in the end we came up short, losing 10-7. The 2nd XV Boys won 42-21 against Onehunga 2B. The Restricted Boys Rugby team lost 24-10 against Rosmini College. The Under 15 Boys played their first game after the holiday break, away at Green Bay High School. The team was rusty after the break, making several uncharacteristic mistakes and spoiling some certain try scoring opportunities. Despite this, Avondale took a convincing lead into the break, 23-0, with tries from Steve Setefano, Lee-zera Roebeck Lavea, Ben Hickman and Ola Hoeft. The weather made a turn for the worse in the second half, with a heavy downpour resulting in muddy conditions. A further four tries were scored in the second half that were all successfully converted by Isimasi Tavae. Second half try scorers were Lech Ulberg Lo-Tam, Casey Wills, Fabian Malungahu and Isimasi Tavae. The final score was 54-0 to Avondale.
SQUASH The Premier Boys finished their season in 5th place after winning their last game of the season against Takapuna Grammar by default. The boys had a terrific season and are excited for the upcoming Badminton Championships! The Senior A Boys lost to St Peters by default.

TAUREWA CAMP 2018 Year 10, Year 12 and Year 13 students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp. We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa Camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure. Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to tell their parents early that their camps are coming up this year.

ABSENCES Parents/Caregivers must notify the College by 9.30am each day if their child is away. You can do this in several ways: a) Send a notification via Family Connection (preferred) • Log in to Family Connection • Select ‘Available E-Forms’ (at top left) • Click on Absence Notification • Fill out the details, save and submit. You will receive a confirmatory email once the notification is approved. This replaces the need to supply an absence note to the home room teacher. b) Email the Attendance Officer: absences@avcol.school.nz. Please include your child’s full name, home room class and the reason for the absence. c) Phone the Absence Line: (09) 820 1071 Students are required to provide a written note for all absences, even after the school has been notified by phone. This note must be brought on the first day of attendance after the absence and given to the home room teacher. Parents will receive a text from the school if their child is absent from home room without explanation. Students must have a note from home if they are signing out of the College.
