B HONOURS ASSEMBLY Monday's Honours Assembly was a special occasion where 182 students were recognised for their achievements in cultural, sporting and academic arenas. Many of these students had achieved outstanding results at regional, national and even international levels. As the curtain fell on the closing night of Catch Me If You Can on Friday, more than 120 student performers and crew took a well-earned bow! The five-night show week was a huge success, with high-energy performances, superb dance numbers and, as promised, a riveting storyline. Congratulations to all who worked so hard in the weeks and months leading up to show week - your efforts both on and off the stage were very well received! Particular thanks go to the key staff involved: Ms Jennings (Choreographer), Mr Stenbo (Musical Director) and especially the Show Director, Mrs Norton, who did such a fantastic job in pulling it all together to create an extremely memorable show for 2018! It is awarded to Year 11 or Year 12 students who have been fully involved in school activities, who have done well academically and intend to return to school for one or two years of further study. BAD DOG AT SMOKEFREEROCKQUEST FINALS Avondale College's Bad Dog gave a fantastic performance at the Smokefreerockquest National Finals on Saturday night! The trio of Maxwell Barrett, William Elliot and Joshua Parker handled a few technical glitches like professionals and gave a tight, highly energised performance in front of an enthusiastic crowd. This year's Smokefreerockquest attracted more than 800 bands and solo/duos who went through regional heats and finals in 20 venues, from Invercargill to Whangarei, with only six bands - including Bad Dog - making it through to the National Final. Bad Dog's following is spreading, with the boys featuring last week on 95bFM as one of the radio station's Fancy New Bands. Watch this space!

SPORTS REPORT Monday 17th September – Sunday 30th September
BADMINTON
The Senior A Boys played our Avondale A Girls for the 5th place position in the ABA Senior A Reserve Grade. The Senior A Boys came out on top, winning 5-1 and ending their season in 5th place. The Senior A girls ended their season in 6th place. This was a good result after two awesome seasons from both teams! The Senior B Boys played Auckland Grammar 3, and our boys won 6-0. They then went on to beat Auckland Grammar 5, winning 6-0. They ended the Term 3 season in second place in the B Grade – Group 1. They have given a very consistent performance throughout the entire season. Senior B Girls lost 5-1 against Auckland Grammar 2 and lost 6-0 against Glendowie 1. The team ended their season in 8th place in the B Grade – Group 2. They have had a tough season, but have stuck at it and fought hard.
CYCLING
The National Hill Climb Championships are a stage of the Northern Cycling Tour and are raced around Mt Wellington in Auckland. They were held on Saturday 8 September this year. The climb itself is an all-out effort up very steep slopes of Mt Wellington, with riders racing individually, each starting at 30 second intervals. Holly Bliss produced one of her best rides of the year, catching the two riders in front of her to finish 5th overall and only missing out on 3rd place by less than two seconds. Well done, Holly, and all the best at the upcoming National School Road Championships!
CROSS COUNTRY
The Avondale Cross Country team competed at the Auckland Secondary Schools Cross Country Championships on Tuesday 25 September, which was held at Saint Kentigern College. Given that the day had been cancelled twice before due to bad weather, it was all go on Tuesday, even with the rain, hail and wind. Our four runners – Joanna Poland, Keon Hall, Samuel Roberts and Adarsh Singh, all did very well to compete in such difficult conditions. A massive congratulations to our super star runner, Joanna, on placing 2nd in the Intermediate Girls race.
SKIING
The Avondale College Snow Team competed at the North Island Secondary Schools Ski Championships from Monday 17 to Wednesday 19 September 2018. What an experience it was for all members of the team: Ally Tang, Amelia Carter, Luca Latham, Luke Howsam, Sophia Howsam, Max Zecchini Dowling and Tristan Mutua. An awesome effort was given by all those who competed. Avondale College ended up 73rd overall, with over 120 schools competing. A special thanks to the staff who helped bring the trip together and to our wonderfully supportive parent helpers!

TAUREWA CAMP Whether kayaking down a river, tramping in the Tongariro National Park or cooking a massive chocolate self-saucing pudding, Taurewa trips are an action-packed week full of highlights! Taurewa is Avondale College's very own campsite in the central North Island, where students can spend time experiencing a variety of activities and challenges in the great outdoors. Activities around camp include a low ropes course, a walk through the local stream, and the Fairy Falls walk where students have the opportunity to stand behind a waterfall. Other activities include kayaking at Tokaanu, walking the Taranaki Falls track in the Tongariro National Park and circumnavigating Lake Rotopounamu. For senior students, the overnight tramp is always a highlight! Year 10, Year 12 and Year 13 students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp. We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa Camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure. Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to remind their parents when they know their camp is coming up!
