There is a report evening planned for parents to meet with the teachers to discuss the report. This will be held in the Atrium on Tuesday 3 July between 4:30pm and 7:30pm.

Please note that online booking of interviews through the Family Connection are now available and will close on Sunday 1 July. From 2 July, appointments will be filled in manually with the appointment form posted out with the report.

Once reports have been posted out, they will be available for viewing online through Family Connection / Student Information / Documents.

CLASSICAL CONCERT Sunday's Classical Concert was a very special event, with performances by our Taikaka Orchestra, Classical Music Academy students, the Premier String Ensemble and the Avondale College Symphony Orchestra.

The concert showcased the breadth of musical opportunity available at the College, and the sheer number of students who stepped onto the stage clearly demonstrated how the programme has grown in strength in recent years.

Some students in the Taikaka Orchestra performed for the very first time after having begun learning instruments this year through our itinerant music programme. Others were highly experienced and accomplished musicians, such as the Premier String Ensemble who gave a dazzling performance, led by student Emily Kamimura and tutored by Mr David Snelling. CLASSICAL CONCERT [CONT] One of the highlights of the concert was the Avondale College Symphony Orchestra's inaugural performance of a very special piece of music, Hush Be Still, written by former student Kirsten Strom. Kirsten is the Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra's Rising Star Young Composer in Residence.

Kirsten's piece gave the orchestra a wonderful opportunity to perform local music specifically written for our ensemble, says Director of Music, Mr Mathew Stenbo.

"Working together with her for the last few years has been a pleasure, and we look forward to seeing and especially hearing more from her in the future."

The Avondale College Music Department would like to thank all their supporters who work hard behind the scenes to enable the music programmes to flourish.

40 HOUR FAMINE Avondale College students have been supporting the humanitarian work of World Vision in a number of different ways this year.

Earlier this year our lead students participated in the World Vision Global Leadership conference held at the Vodafone Centre in Manukau. They joined other students from around Auckland to hear many inspirational speeches related to the current crisis in South Sudan.

During Term 2, students at Avondale College have been raising money to contribute to the World Vision cause through participating in the 40 Hour Famine and also by contributing donations through their home room classes. This is to help reach our target goal of $3000.

This week a bake sale was held in the school atrium, raising over $260 in 20 minutes. In the last week of term, a final fundraising concert will be held in the PAC at lunchtime with a gold coin donation, featuring groups such as the school K POP group, Josh Parker and the Level 3 Music band.

CAMBRIDGE EXAMS MANAGER An organised and committed person is required for a fixed-term position as Exam Manager for Cambridge Assessment International Education exams at Avondale College.

Applicants must be available during the exam period which runs from 9 October to 16 November. There will also be a requirement to attend some training prior to this time.

PERFORMING ARTS ACADEMY PERFORMANCE EVENING The hard work and talent of our Performing Arts Academy students were displayed in their performance evening last Thursday evening. The audience was treated to performances from all four Academy strands - Classical Music, Jazz Music, Dance and Drama - featuring work they have been developing in their before-school classes.

Congratulations to all students - and their teachers - on producing such a dynamic and entertaining evening.

SPORTS REPORT Monday 18th June – Sunday 24th June 2018

BASKETBALL

The Premier Girls lost 62-50 against Orewa College.

Premier Girls Basketball Team The Junior Premier Girls lost to Mt Albert Grammar 2.

On Friday 22nd June, the Premier Boys lost 80-65 against Auckland Grammar.

The U19 boys played Mt Albert Grammar on Wednesday 20th June.

It was an intense first quarter, with both sides coming out strongly, scoring and defending well. The scores were tied at the close of the first and second quarter, so to start the third quarter the boys ran their press and managed to get a 12 point lead. At the close of the 3rd quarter the score was 32-20. Going into the 4th quarter, the boys kept their composure and three consecutive three-pointers from their main scorer, saw our lead drop to three. However, Mohammed Joshua decided to put his Ray Allen jumper on and shoot six from six from the three point line to take the lead to 18 and kept it until the final buzzer; winning 59-41. A special mention goes to Assistant Coach Tauhir Toyer for motivating the boys and pushing them to better themselves every week. Standout players were Jarome Tinielu, Kyle Makaea Glassie and Caleb Finau on defence, and Mohammed Joshua on offence.

The U17A Boys Basketball had another close loss against Kelston on Thurday 21st June. A strong second quarter gave them a lead at halftime, but then Kelston really put on the brakes. A deep three-pointer from Bradley Murray-McGregor made it a two point match with seconds to go, but Kelston managed to get to the basket and take out the win with a score of 41-37.

The Junior A Boys defeated Western Springs, 46-30.

The Junior B Boys got off to a shaky start, giving away easy passes.

Nevertheless, they continued to defend tenaciously and stemmed the flow of points from the opposition in the lead up to the half-time whistle. Despite a refreshed outlook and better movement off the ball in the second half, the turnovers continued into the second half and too many passes allowed the opposition some unchallenged open court layups. The boys lost 50-21 to Rutherford Kings.

FOOTBALL

1st XI Girls lost 6-2 against Baradene on Wednesday 20th June.

The 2nd XI Girls played against Lynfield College at home on a rainy Wednesday afternoon. Lynfield had most of the possession, but Player of the Day Naheeda Qari (Goal Keeper) kept Avondale College in the game. The game was tied up 0-0 at half time and Avondale College did manage to have a few shots at goal in the second half. Unfortunately, with three minutes left on the clock, Lynfield scored a goal, resulting in a 1-0 loss to Avondale College. The girls played aggressively in defence and showed great endeavour for the entire match.

The Junior Girls drew 1-1 against Rangitoto College. The girls played well in poor conditions and kept pushing forward for the winner. Mia Price scored for Avondale.

1st XI Boys lost 4-1 against Mt Albert Grammar in their midweek Knockout Cup fixture on Tuesday 19th June at Parrs Park. With a number of injuries and illnesses the boys had a tough run in conceding an early goal which was doubled just before the break, 2-0 down at half time. The second half saw much improvement but another goal was scored against us. Arsalah Azimi scored a goal in a late comeback, but Mt Albert sealed the win with another goal to knock us out of this year’s Cup competition.

1st XI Boys lost 4-2 against Westlake Boys 1st XI on Friday 22nd June at QBE Stadium.

The Year 10A Boys recorded their first win of the season: 3-1 against Auckland Grammar at AGS. It's fair to say that the boys outplayed Grammar from the start, and although we were down 0-1 after 15 minutes, the boys rallied, kept their shape and were very impressive to the end. This was a great game from all members of the team.

On Saturday 23rd June the Year 10B Boys played top-of-the-table, Massey. Despite having only ten players due to injuries, we went out with determination and at halftime were even at 2-2. Exhaustion set in in the second half and Massey got three goals in the back of our net.

Outstanding keeping from Aiden Wachter saved many shots on goal and three penalties.

HOCKEY

The 1st XI Girls lost 3-1 against Pakuranga College.

The U15 Girls lost 2-0 against Maclean’s College.

It was literally a game of two halves as the 1st XI Boys took on St Peter’s College. Some good attacking opportunities in the first half saw Lewis Rose finish off some consistent team field play and possession to score our only goal halfway through the first thirty minutes. In the second half St Peter’s dominated in attack and we absorbed a lot of pressure. Player of the Day, Nikolas Whitehead, continued to direct the defensive efforts from the back and made some good saves to keep us in the game. After repeated defensive penalty corners we faltered and St Peter’s scored, tying the game in what was the final result, a 1-1 draw.

The U15 Boys defeated St Peter’s U15 Boys, 3-0. This was a fast paced game, but some clever play in the circle from our forwards secured some penalty corners. Liam Law-Telea’s miss-hit totally confused the defence for a soft bouncy goal to put us up 1-0. Then another lovely strike from Liam soon after put us up 2-0 at half time. Giving the boys on the bench a well-deserved run, we got the whole squad out and about in the second half. This was one of our best games of the season, and the boys’ teamwork and passing was a delight to watch.

Handy at the post as always, Abhishek Lal secured the final goal and we held on to the 3-0 margin right to the end. The boys maintained excellent discipline on the pitch throughout the whole game. We are now in third-equal position on the point's table, alongside Saint Kentigern College; behind King’s College and Mount Albert Grammar who are equally placed at the top of the table. Our lads are doing Avondale College proud in the premier Auckland competition for this age group.

LACROSSE

Senior A Girls defeated Mt Roskill Gold, 10-6.

Senior B Girls lost 14-6 against Diocesan B.

The 1st XV Boys lost 25-5 against Waitakere College.

The 2nd XV Boys drew 19-19 against Kelston Boys. The boys played a great game of rugby, showing both skill and discipline throughout the game. A standout performance was given by winger Keonte Tiauli, and Vaka Kupu dominated in the forwards, leading his team through the field. The final result was unfortunate as the boys were up 19-12 before Kelston scored in the last play of the game.

The Restricted Boys 5th grade had another win this weekend, defeating Auckland Grammar 42–17. The boys managed to pull away in the second half, scoring three quick tries to start from the break.

This was a great effort from all involved.

The Senior Girls lost 57-0 against Mt Albert Grammar.

SQUASH

Squash Senior Girls A and Senior Girls B won by default against Birkenhead College and Orewa College in their weekly competitions.

AKSS SQUASH BOYS TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Squash Boys participated in the AKSS Squash Team Championships held in North Shore on last Tuesday and Wednesday.

Last year the boys finished 2nd in Division 2. This year, through their gradings and a desire to pit themselves against the best, they were in Division 1. It was always going to be tough.

Our draw saw us up against the highly talented Takapuna in the first round. After the powers of Westlake Boys and Auckland Grammar, they're the next best side. The boys battled really hard in all of their fixtures, but they fell short in all their ties, and lost 5-0.

Then came a crunch tie against Manurewa, which would be pivotal to our overall placing. Vatsal Gajjar had a comfortable 11-3, 11-5, 11-2 victory. Luke Gray had an incredible 10-12, 11-6, 5-11, 11-7, 11-2 win (coming from two sets down and playing some great squash).

Brandon Adonis, put up to top seed in Kavel's absence, had one of his best performances of the season against a much higher graded player. He took the first set 11-7, but couldn't quite keep it up for the remainder of the contest. With having to default a tie, this meant it was 2-2 going into the deciding rubber. Thankfully, Lewis Rose, rose to the occasion, and produced a convincing 11-3, 11-2, 11-3 win, for a 3-2 win overall.

The plate final against, St Peter's, was always going to be a mountain to climb. However, Luke Gray continued his impressive performances with a 11-6, 11-6, 11-5 victory. Lewis Rose had a bruising encounter, and ended up struggling with a shoulder injury, going down fighting 6-11, 11-9, 6-11, 7-11. Brandon Adonis, with movement limited by a knee injury, tried his best but lost his tie 3-11, 2-11, 4-11. Plaeton Xavier performed admirably to win 11-5, 11-3, 11-1, leaving it down to Vatsal Gajjar in the deciding tie. We really were the walking wounded, as Vastal had been dealing with knee and ankle niggles!

He was once again up against a higher graded player. Some close calls went against him, and his valiant effort ended in a 5-11, 9-11, 5-11 loss. The final score: a 3-2 loss and a 6th place finish. The boys did Avondale proud, showing HEART values and playing with a great positive spirit. Thanks to everyone for their support!

Girls Squash Team

AKSS SQUASH GIRLS TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS

Last Tuesday and Wednesday the Senior Girls A Squash team participated in the Auckland Secondary Schools Squash Championships at the National Squash Centre at Unitec.

The girls were very excited and eagerly arrived on Tuesday morning.

The competition was a great learning experience for all participants.

The girls that took part were Shirley Chen (Captain), Ally Tan, Adelia Roesli, Sophie Rose, Ling Ly and Karen Guan. The girls gave of their very best and played with enthusiasm and good commitment. This was the first time most of the girls had participated in a competition, with a few girls being beginner squash players. There were seven schools that participated in the tournament. The girls learned how to score, referee and mark games. Most of the games were very competitive, with some games going down to the fifth game to be a decider. Most of Adelia’s games went to best of five games and Shirley showed good competitive spirit in her games. Sophie had many good forehand drives. Karen narrowly lost in her five-set game to Orewa College and narrowly went down 15-17 in the 5th game.

Ling had outstanding games and won two of her three matches. Ally displayed good serves and backhand drives.

This was great squash exposure for our students as we came up against some graded players from the other schools. A great tournament was had by all and Shirley Chen must be specially commended for being an outstanding captain. The girls showed great HEART values throughout the competition and were good ambassadors for the College.

AKSS ULTIMATE FRISBEE TOURNAMENT

The Senior Boys and Girls competed in the Ultimate Frisbee Indoor Championships on Sunday 24th June. The Senior Boys finished in ninth place overall, whilst the Senior Girls finished in second place in the competition!

Ultimate is based on the value of spirit since it is self-refereed, and everyone was well spirited and put in their best effort. The girls' team, led by Julia Ling, won all their games but unfortunately, were unable to beat the undefeated champions in the final, Epsom Girls' Grammar, leading them to place second overall. The boys' team, led by Owen McGrath, fought hard and won against Selwyn College 10-3, but were out-maneouvered by the high-level players from the other schools, leaving them to place 9th out of 12 teams.

Special mention to Johannes Schneider, a valuable senior player from the boys' team, who will be heading back to Germany next week. We wish you all the best and hope you continue playing Ultimate in the future.

TAUREWA CAMP 2018 Year 10, Year 12 and Year 13 students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp.

We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa Camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure.

Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to tell their parents early that their camps are coming up this year.
