Approximately 650 gorgeously dressed students and staff enjoyed a winter wonderland evening at Eden Park on Saturday night. The dance floor was non-stop and full all night, thanks to the superb efforts of the DJ, Jan Holland from DJ 4 You. With theming by Eventz On Show and photography by Cactus Photography, it was a night to remember! Special thanks to Ms Joynes, Mrs Miller and Mrs Patel for their wonderful organisation of this event.

REPORT EVENING TUESDAY 3 JULY 4.30 - 7.30PM All students will soon be issued with a report that is designed to give an indication of their progress so far this year. There is a report evening planned for parents to meet with the teachers to discuss the report. This will be held in the Atrium on Tuesday 3 July between 4:30pm and 7:30pm. Please note that online booking of interviews through the Family Connection are now available and will close on Sunday 1 July. From 2 July, appointments will be filled in manually with the appointment form posted out with the report. Once reports have been posted out, they will be available for viewing online through Family Connection / Student Information / Documents.

The popular kids' TV show What Now filmed an 'Avondale Extravaganza' on location at Avondale Primary School on Sunday morning! Featured in the show were a number of talented Avondale College students, including our very own worldclass DJ Kalib Strickland, aka K-Swizz, trickster footballer Ruben Poole, and Indie rock band, Bad Dog. Two Avondale College alumni celebrities - cricketer Martin Guptill and USA-based actress Rose McIver - also joined the fun via Skype interviews. It was a great morning's entertainment - check it out on demand here: (See photos on page 3)

ADOBE CREATIVITY IN EDUCATION DAY The Adobe Creativity in Education Day took place in the Innovation classrooms on Wednesday last week. The day was facilitated by Adobe's Education Specialist Dr Tim Kitchen, and Solution Consultant Jane Chen. The aim of the project was to have the students work with a small group to build a two minute video promoting a concept/idea/issue that is important to them and enhance their 21st century communication and creative problem-solving skills. None of the students had experienced the Adobe Spark tools before but most of them were familiar with a range of other Adobe apps. So, with a few instructions the students were off and running. "I was so impressed with the seamless way they cooperated together, creatively solved problems and built their digital stories with a mix of the Adobe apps," said Dr Kitchen. These apps included Spark Video, Spark Post, Premiere Pro, Photoshop and Illustrator. "Jane and I enjoyed working with these students and were very impressed with what they were able to achieve in such a short space of time. Most importantly, it was great to see these Click here to students display strong skills in co-operation, creative problem view STEAM solving and creativity." YEAR 10 SURVEY
TRAVEL & TOURISM EXPO
Our school has been invited to take part in a survey funded by the Ministry of Health during this term. Some of Year 10 students will be asked to fill in a questionnaire about their lifestyles, the things that they do, what they are interested, and some health-related questions. The rest of our Year 10 students will complete a shorter questionnaire asking just health-related questions. The information provided contributes to both local and national decision-making to do with youth health.
Seventy Year 13 Travel and Tourism students were able to experience what it might be like to work in the travel agency field by working together as a team to put on a travel expo. Students chose their own destination and made decisions as a team about what would be important to tourists and how to put together an informative and creative display board. The students displayed HEART values throughout the day and presented their finished boards with pride and enthusiasm to teachers and each other.
Students’ participation is voluntary and they are welcome to ask questions before deciding whether to take part. Everything they write is confidential and anonymous and they will not be asked for any identifying information (eg, they won’t be asked for their name, date of birth, etc). Information will be handled in a safe and secure way. What Now caught up with Avcol alumna Rose McIver on Sunday morning. They asked the i-Zombie actress about Avondale, acting, and what she misses about being away from New Zealand... What Now’s VIP TV interview with Rose McIver 17 June 2018 Rose you went to Avondale College - what did you love about this area? “I loved Avondale College – I went to school there. The music department, the drama department, I played netball – I mean it was just such a great school. I felt really lucky to get to go to high school in Avondale.” You’ve made it very far in your acting career – do you have any advice for young actors here in New Zealand? “The best thing to do is just start making material. You only get better by practising. You are only as limited as you think you are, that’s what I would say about it. Make some stuff – get out there!”

BASKETBALL
The Premier Girls team played two games this week against the top two teams in our division. On Monday 11 June the girls played Epsom Girls Grammar. We started the game a bit slowly, finding ourselves in a thirty point deficit, but we managed to pull it together in the last quarter, outscoring Epsom by twelve points and ending the game 4463 to Epsom. On Friday 15 June the Premier Girls played Botany Downs College. Our team came out a little timidly in the first quarter, but Mercy Lemisio stepped up from the beginning, leading our team from the point guard position. She scored the first 15 of our 19 points and then opened up scoring opportunities for our other scorers. We were down by 21 at half time, but managed to pull the lead back to nine points, losing 56-65 to Botany. Even with two losses we can really see the growth in our girls’ performance; they are really improving and learning as the season progresses. We look forward to being more competitive in the second round of pool play. The Junior Girls’ basketball team had a great win against Diocesan School for Girls, winning 61-5. The girls all stepped up and played extremely well on both defence and offence. Their final game will be against Mount Albert Grammar next week. Our Premier Boys played two games during the week. On Monday 11 June they played Westlake Boys, but came up short, losing 84-72. Our team was down by ten at half time, but we managed to pick up our game and came through with an excellent third quarter, bringing the score back to 56-55. The game was close all the way through to the final quarter. With three minutes left in the game, Westlake drained two unanswered threes in a row. We continued to keep it basket for basket until they hit two more unanswered threes in a row to blow out the score. It was a good performance all round by the boys. On Friday 15 June the Premier boys played their second game of the week against St Peters College. The team kept close in the beginning but ended up losing 44-63. U19 Boys played Auckland Boys Grammar. The team came out ready for battle, but went down fighting, 60-42. Stand out performances were given by Caleb Finau, who was the go to man on defence, along with Mohammed Joshua who scored an impressive 9 out of 11 from 3-point-land. U17A Boys’ Basketball had a close loss to Mt Roskill Grammar. After leading for most of the second half, a late run saw the Avondale team lose 47-46. Our Junior A Boys won 44-23 vs St Pauls A. Our Junior B Boys defeated Elim, 62-20.

Our 1st XI Girl’s Football team played Takapuna Grammar at home on Wednesday afternoon. Both sides came out fighting in a crucial game where the winners would move up the points table. Our Avondale girls who came away with a well-deserved win, and a final score of 1-0! A beautiful long range goal was scored by right winger Jenna Dullabh who sent the ball over the keeper’s head. The match turned defensive in the second half but Avondale, led by Captain Isabella Barnes, worked with determination to repeatedly keep the Takapuna forwards out. Player of the Day was Ashtika Singh, who is continuing to strengthen her goal keeping skills, exhibiting confidence and plenty of courage, making save after save. The 2nd XI Girls won by default. The Junior Premier Girls won 2-0 against St Cuthbert’s. The 1st XI Boys team lost 8-0 against a strong Saint Kentigern side. The 2nd XI Boys team also lost 6-3 to Saint Kentigern College. The Year 10 A Boys team lost 1-4 against Sacred Heart College. On Saturday 16th June, the Year 10 B Boys played Auckland Grammar. At half time we were 0-0 and we were down to ten players. The captain, Sam Stephen, shifted the team around and we scored three goals. Nico Cribb got two in the back of the net and Sam Stephen got one. Final score: 3-0 to Avondale. The Year 9 Boys match between Avondale and Rutherford was a tough one for Avondale. We had only one substitute, but despite the circumstances the team played formidably. We scored the first goal ten minutes into the game. However, Rutherford came up with two and we were down 2-1 at half time. In the second half, Nathan was fouled ten metres away from the goal line. He took a dramatic kick directly into the left corner of the goal to equalise the score. We continued to play strongly but missed a few goals, and the game ended 3-2 to Rutherford. Better luck next time, team!
HOCKEY
The 1st XI Girls team played Mt Albert Grammar. This was an exciting game full of goal-scoring action. Player of the Day was Simran Karan, who scored a brilliant goal dribbling through four defenders and passing the goalie by flicking the ball into the bottom left of the goal. Scarlett Giffin Munn also scored a wonderful goal on the right hand side of the circle from a very acute angle. Keep up the training, girls, and remember ‘’Confidence comes from discipline and training’’. The U15 Hockey Girls comprehensively defeated Epsom Girls 8-0. The 1st XI Boys team played a competitive game against Takapuna Grammar. It was a shaky start after the first couple of minutes as the lads let in a fairly easy goal. However, the team rallied to even the score with a great field goal by Alex James. We converted a penalty corner and then ran in an amazing team field goal to take a commanding 3-1 lead. In the second half consistent pressure was applied even though we let in one field goal and had a penalty corner against us. Player of the day was Tilo Selter-Jones who cemented his hatrick, netting a field goal and another penalty corner. More scoring opportunities went begging, but we ended with a great victory for the team: a 5-3 win. The U15 Boys Hockey side played Maclean’s College. The rain and cold bite of winter gave our subs some grief, and we swapped them in and out regularly to keep them warm. A delayed start saw Rahul Naickar in full flight up the middle combining nicely with Abhishek

Lal and Anoosh Kulkarni as our talented forward pack attacked for twenty minutes against a well drilled defence that kept shutting us out. However, Rahul kept working away and was eventually rewarded, taking us 1-0 up. With one of our key players missing due to sickness, our halves performed stoically, with Hersh Patel delivering the ball wide and making the play in the talented manner that he does, which is always a joy to watch. At half time we remained 1-0 ahead and kept pressuring, but a runaway goal to Macleans caught our defence up high to make it 1-1. The boys dug deep once again and got themselves out of trouble with another beautiful individual goal from Rahul. The final result was a hard-fought 2-1 win. Special mention must go to Dan Parkinson, who is a strong sweeping defender and always reliable under pressure. One more win will place us in the top four playoffs.
LACROSSE
The Senior A Girls played Epsom Girls on Thursday 14 June. The girls played with lots of heart and never gave up. The score wasn't reflective of the match as there were just a couple of occasions when EGGS scored a few goals in quick succession. We spent lots of time in their goal area but couldn't quite find the back of the net. However, we did score the first goal of the match! It is always good to see lots of parental and peer support for our girls on the side-lines. Final score was 15-3 to Epsom. Our Senior B Girls defeated Mt Albert B, 11-6.
MOUNTAIN BIKING
Paige Weir competed in the Mountain Biking XC Race 3 at Woodhill Bike Park on Sunday 17 June, finishing in 3rd place. There was a very competitive field of riders this year, and so she was really happy with this result. She looks forward to competing in a further two races in the Auckland Secondary School series to be held at Waitawa Regional

Year 10 Gold defeated Lynfield White, 30-11. Player of the Day: Grace Tavita Fesili (GS) for her ability to successfully step up to an unfamiliar position in the goal circle. Year 10 Silver lost 26-12 against Western Springs College Green. Player of the Day: Yelizaveta Pyshnaya (WD). Year 10 Bronze lost 11-23 against Rutherford Gold. Player of the Day: Keona Samuela (GS) and Khalani Stowers (GK). Year 9 Black lost narrowly, 22-21 against Lynfield Gold. Year 9 Gold lost 21-18 against Massey B. Player of the Day: Imogen Tommy for her hard work ethic even though she was carrying an injury! Year 9 Silver were defeated Henderson Maroon 13-11. Year 9 Bronze won 39-3 against Henderson Black. Player of the Day: Emily Reddy.
RUGBY LEAGUE
1st XIII defeated Aorere College, 34-12.
RUGBY UNION
On Saturday 16th June, the 1st XV boys played Tangoroa College. The boys got off to a great start, pinning Tangaroa in their end from the kick off. A busting run finished off some great passing to see Avondale score first. Capitalising on our mistakes, Tangaroa scored three times before Captain Zac Mauga ran the length of the field for a try. The half time score: 10-15. In the second half things deteriorated quickly after losing our first five. Tangaroa piled on multiple unanswered points to win 46-10. Avondale College 2nd XV had their first home game on Saturday 16 June versus King's College. After ten minutes into the game we were two men down and fighting against an experienced team. Final score: 25-5. The Restricted Rugby team got their first win of the season playing against Sacred Heart. The boys started off strongly and kept the intensity for the entire 60 minutes, coming away with a massive 88 – 0 win. This was a great effort from the whole squad. U15 Boys and Senior Girls Rugby teams both won by default.

The Premier Boys Squash team lost 12-0 against Mt Albert Grammar. The Senior A Boys lost 6-3 against Mt Albert Grammar B. Senior Girls B defeated Rutherford 2, 3-1.

Avondale College Senior Netball Results: Premier 1 defeated TKKM o Hoani Waititi, 37-21. Player of the Day: Ellezyr Maiuu. Premier 2 won against Henderson Maroon. Senior Gold lost 37-5 against Western Springs. Player of the Day: Kyra Woods. Senior Silver Won by default. Senior White won 21-2 against Rutherford B. Player of the Day: Tianni Viqasi.
The Auckland Swimming Open Championships were held at West Wave Aquatic Centre. Several swimmers from Avondale College competed in the swimming championships: Ikko Shibuya, Lucy Makaea, Noah Makaea, Vienna Samuels, Jacob Laurence and Alex Dunkley. Alex Dunkley received Bronze in the 1500m Freestyle event. Lucy Makaea finished 2nd, receiving silver for the 200m Freestyle and Bronze for the 400m Freestyle event. Ikko Shibuya came in at 1st, winning Gold in 400m Freestyle and a Bronze medal in the 50m and 100m Butterfly.

TAUREWA CAMP 2018 Year 10, Year 12 and Year 13 students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp. We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa Camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure. Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to tell their parents early that their camps are coming up this year.
