PERFECT SCORES FOR MICROSOFT EXAMS

The competition is heating up in the lead up to the Microsoft Office Specialist national championships this weekend, with 22 Avondale College students having logged perfect scores of 1000/1000 so far. Even more impressively, a number of these students have achieved this score in record times - most under ten minutes - and across multiple applications. The competition tests students on their aptitude and knowledge of Microsoft applications: MSWord, Excel and PowerPoint, with points gained for accuracy and credit given for fast completion. Our Avondale students have not only gained professionally recognised accreditation for their achievements but are also up for selection to the New Zealand team to compete at the World Championships in the USA later this year. "This, by far, is the most exceptional range of performances we've had from a such a largely new and young group," says TIC of Avondale's Innovation Programme, Mr Paul McClean. "One hundred and twenty schools are competing nationally this year - so if we are successful in gaining national finals selection, it promises to be a truly incredible run into the Worlds!" Avondale College students have represented New Zealand at MOS World Championships over the past four years, gaining 12 top-ten places, including three podium finishes. The results of the national selection for 2018 will be announced next week.

WHAU YOUTH AWARDS Avondale College is celebrating the success of our students and staff who were recognised at the Whau Youth Awards on Friday 25 May. Junior Premier Girls won 37-30 against St Mary’s.

On a cold and wet Friday night the recently promoted Avondale College 1st XI Boys Football team came up against last year’s 3rd place Premier grade team, Auckland Grammar School. The first half kicked off with the skill and prestige of Auckland Grammar school being very apparent. In the first 30 minutes of the game a lot of the pressure and chances were being rained down on the Avondale box, with keeper Lobsang Sherpa having to make a crucial save to keep things level.

Our 1st XI Girls Football went up against Macleans College in the cold and wet Wednesday afternoon fixture. An evenly matched game against another team who had moved up into the Premier division this season saw a score of 1-1 at full time. Avondale dominated in the back line, closing down their strikers quickly to keep them out. Brooke Whiu secured a beautiful long range goal in the second half after a break down the left wing. Player of the Day was Year 11 Trinity May, who despite being new to the 1st XI squad this year stood her ground in left back, beating her opposite number every time. Special mention to our additional players, Kimberely Tasker and Jamie-Lee Clay, who stepped up into starting positions for the first time playing fantastic tenacious football and making their team proud. The 2nd XI Boys lost 6-0 against Auckland Grammar 2nd XI. The 2nd XI Girls Football team lost 2-0 against Rutherford College. The Year 10 A Boys lost 1-0 against St Kentigern. An excellent defensive effort was given against a top team. The boys are also beginning to create good scoring opportunities and are approaching breakthrough time! The Year 10 B Boys played Waitakere B, winning 6-1.

The Year 9 Boys started really well against Selwyn A, going two goals up in the first few minutes. From there the boys remained consistent for the whole game. Coming off the back of a heavy defeat they showed a great amount of determination. Even in the final minutes, the team kept encouraging each other to do the best they could, finally coming away with a 12-0 victory.

The 1st XI Boys Hockey team battled against Kings College 1st XI on Wednesday evening. The game was anyone's for the taking, with amazing counter attacks from both sides. Player of the Day Jappreet Kullar worked hard to create turn over ball for our team together with slotting our three goals, assisted by some good team work that put pressure on Kings' defensive circle. Avondale lads played well in this tight match, belying the end 5-3 result.

The U15 Boys Hockey Team The U15 Boys started the game at well less than full strength due to camp and exams, the boys succumbed to a quick individual goal in the first minute 0-1 against. Recovering from the shock quickly, we piled on the pressure, playing most of the first half in their 25 but frustrated by their solid defence. Anoosh Kulkarni, Rahul Naickar and Abhishek Lal kept attacking with many hits and sweeps deflecting. The match was refereed tightly and a penalty corner against saw us down 2-0 at half time. Then Dipan Patel, Rahul and Abhishek combined very nicely down the left side for a lovely hit from the top of the circle by Rahul bringing the score to 1-2. Another penalty corner against had us down again at 1-3, then a super quick breakaway put us 1-4 down. But the boys dug deep and kept trying to the bitter end, with Daksh Sandhu converting after some scrappy play in their circle. Final score was a 2-4 loss, which was a creditable effort without subs the whole game. The U15 Girls lost 2-1 vs Pakuranga College.

SQUASH
The Restricted Boys started well, battling in the opposite 22 but couldn’t get across the line and were down 5-0 at half time. The first ten minutes of the second half was a struggle, with AGS scoring three tries in quick succession. The boys pulled through at the end, scoring in the last minute of the game to finish with a well-deserved try. Final score: 31-7 to AGS. The Under 15 Boys team played a previously undefeated Onehunga High School team away from home. Playing into a stiff breeze in the first half, Avondale took the lead through a great team try finished by fullback Nathaniel Roma. Onehunga struck back quickly to level the score, before prop Steve Setefano scored a great try out wide.
The Premier Boys were without two key players in the game against Takapuna. Despite this, they gave a very good showing but fell short with the final score a 5-9 loss. The Senior A Boys side lost, 12-0 against Kings A. The Senior A Girls drew 2-2 against Pukekohe Senior B Girls lost 3-1 against Rutherford 1.

AUCKLAND YOUTH ORCHESTRA Determination, dedication and a passion for music has seen four Avondale College students earn places in the prestigious Auckland Youth Orchestra - for the second year in a row. Year 12 students Joanna Sang, Rana Cawley and Emily Kamimura, together with former student Genevieve Tang, are once again taking their seats to perform a challenging repertoire at public concerts throughout the year. Sunday's performance at the Auckland Town Hall of Wagner's Rienzi Overture, Grieg's Piano Concert in A Minor and Elgar's Enigma Variations was outstanding, with the quality of performance particularly impressive given the young age of the musicians. As well as the obvious benefits to their own performance experience, the girls agree that they enjoy the social aspects of being part of the 79 piece orchestra. "It's like being in the best co-curricular programme ever," says Rana. Next on the agenda is a whole new repertoire as the orchestra prepares for its upcoming Europe tour in August where they will perform as part of the annual festival at Berlin's famous Konzerthaus. Performances in Vienna, Dobrna (Slovenia), Prague, Tübingen and Bayreuth are also on the agenda. In the meantime Joanna, Rana and Emily are also heavily involved with Avondale College's music programme, including the Symphony Orchestra (for which Joanna is Concertmaster) and the String Ensemble, with performances at the KBB Music Festival, the Avondale College Classical Concert and more scheduled for later in the year. The AYO's next free public concert will be held at the Auckland Town Hall on 9 September.

AVCOL ACTORS ON THEIR WAY TO NATIONAL SHAKESPEARE COMPETITION Six Avondale College Drama students are on their way to Wellington this weekend to take part in the National Shakespeare Festival. The group won the West Auckland heat of the SGCNZ University of Otago Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival in April and will now join performers from 24 regional centres around New Zealand for performances and workshops with leading theatre practitioners. Now in its 27th year, the nationwide festival involves over 5500 students from more than half the secondary schools in New Zealand.

To get financial assistance you have to fill in a Financial Assistance form and give it to your school. You can get this form from your school or the NZQA website at: www.nzqa.govt.nz/financialassistance.

TAUREWA CAMP 2018 Year 10, Year 12 and Year 13 students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp. We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa Camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure. Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to tell their parents early that their camps are coming up this year.
