In the last week of Term 1, 24 Year 10 to 13 students departed Auckland for Tokyo, Japan, in the Daito Bunka Dai-Ichi High School exchange. The exchange has occurred for the past 29 years and sees our students immerse themselves in Japanese life for sixteen days. Each student lived with a Japanese family, attended school with their homestay and took part in yoga and calligraphy lessons. Students involved themselves in judo and handball clubs and even cleaned the school, as is customary, with their Japanese counterparts. Alongside the school exchange our students also had the opportunity to sightsee in Tokyo, Kyoto, Nara and Hiroshima where they gained insights into the cultural and historic sides of Japan. The trip included a shinkansen (bullet train) ride past the awe inspiring Mt Fuji, temple visits, shopping and plenty of walking! The sightseeing culminated in an emotive trip to the Peace Memorial and Museum in Hiroshima. We look forward to hosting the Japanese staff and students in the return trip in July and August of this year.

ANZAC DAY Twenty three Avondale College prefects and staff represented the school with pride at the Anzac Day service held in Avondale on 25 April. Head prefects Matthew Manukuo and Tiffany Sua both spoke at the event, and a wreath was laid at the memorial on behalf of the College.

NZIBO NATIONAL CAMP AND COMPETITION Three Avondale College students were selected amongst the country’s top 25 high school biologists to participate in this year’s New Zealand International Biology Olympiad Camp. Jesslyn Chen, Leo Cekus and Eric Huang represented the College with pride and enthusiasm. During the ten-day residential camp, co-ordinated by Avondale College's own Mr Shawn Cooper, students first had the opportunity to visit the research labs at Auckland University’s School of Medical Sciences where they observed current research projects, spoke with scientists, and conducted their own scientific investigations using the most modern technologies. Growing colonies of glow-in-the-dark bacteria gathered from fish gills was a highlight – literally! Following this, the campers went snorkelling at Goat Island Marine Reserve in Leigh and learned how to conduct marine investigations. Massey Albany hosted stage two of the camp, challenging the students to consider animal welfare when participating in conservation, allowing students to isolate their own DNA from saliva, and using nanopore DNA sequencing to “play CSI” on the stomach contents from a stranded whale to see what it had eaten. Massey’s final contribution was to lead a field day on Tiritiri Matangi where students observed korimako (bell bird) and hihi (stitch bird) behaviour to interpret ecological relationships important to conservation management. The day ended with a sighting of four of the last remaining 347 takahē living in Aotearoa. While most students relaxed over the holiday period, Jesslyn, Leo and Eric are to be commended for their extraordinary efforts preparing for and competing in the final two days of practical and theoretical examinations. Tested on their dissection skills, disease pathology observations, data processing abilities and technical lab skills using micropipettes and spectrophotometers, these students finished the camp exhausted. As they await the results of NZIBO 2018 competition, all three have already earned Silver Awards for their achievements and should hold their heads high, if for no other reason than to see the opportunities that undoubtedly await them in the future!

Year 9 student Findlay Shannon is heading to Denmark to represent New Zealand at the world GTramp Games after winning the New Zealand Youth Division of the NZ GTramp Champs held at Jump in Avondale on Sat 21 April. GTramping is an extreme sport incorporating freestyle and acrobatic styles - and is a sport Findlay has been involved with for several years. We wish him all the best for the international competition in August!

13BIO CITY MISSION VOLUNTEER DAY
Year 13 student Kanah Andrews-Nahu broke another NZ & Oceania record at the Youth & Junior Olympic Weightlifting development camp and competition in the holidays. She's well on track for the Oceania Champs in June and hopefully the Youth Olympics in October!
Over the holidays 20 Year 13 Biology students participated in a service-learning activity to investigate the impact of poverty and poor nutrition on hauora, while assisting some of our community members who are most in need. Organised by Mr Shawn Cooper, the volunteer day was designed to discuss the social and scientific factors leading to the increasing rates of type 2 diabetes in New Zealand. Students were given a tour of the Auckland City Mission Distribution Centre where they sorted through donated linen and food to assist in the delivery of emergency food parcels and household items for community members in crisis. Aside from showing tremendous atawhai for others, these students examined the nutritional value of foods donated to the City Mission and spoke with staff to learn more about how the community can better provide healthier food donations and much needed items such as beds (including frames). Watch for further issues of Heartbeat to see some of the student action plans that they are devising to help stop the type 2 diabetes timebomb in New Zealand. For the time being, please be aware that the Auckland City Mission is in current need of beds with frames, clean unstained bedding and winter clothing and that they are happy to collect larger items that are in good condition from your home – call 09 377 4322 to arrange a pick-up.
DAITO BUNKA DAI-ICHI HIGH SCHOOL - AVONDALE COLLEGE EXCHANGE 2018 On July 28 we will be welcoming students and staff from our sister school Daito Bunka High School in Tokyo. This is a reciprocal visit that has been taking place every second year for the last 29 years. Over that time a warm and close relationship has developed between the two schools. This year 29 students will be spending two weeks at Avondale College. A very special part of the exchange is the homestay programme and to this end we are seeking families who would be willing to voluntarily provide a bed and food for this period for our guests. You do not have to be able to speak any Japanese fortunately the students have sufficient English to get by. The students will be with you for a total of ten nights (Saturday July 28 to Thursday August 9). Students will stay at a hotel near the airport on August 9 for an early departure on August 10. On Wednesday August 1 they will travel to Rotorua and return on August 2. If you would be able to provide a homestay for one or more students we would love to hear from you. TALENT QUEST There was just so much talent on stage at the annual Avondale College Talent Quest in the last week of term! Judging the performances were two Avondale College alumni, musician Dixon Nacey and singer/songwriter Iris G, as well as hip-hop artist Kings. The prefect Talent Quest committee did a great job organising and MC'ing the event - and also demonstrating much talent of their own in the annual Prefects v Teachers concluding acts! Well done to all the finalists, and particular congratulations to the overall winner for the second year in a row - hip hop dancer, Kiahan Simons-Tipau. TAUREWA CAMP 2018 Year 10, Year 12 and Year 13 students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp. We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa Camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure. Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to tell their parents early that their camps are coming up this year.
