Students performing at the Titirangi Music Festival on Friday Our talented jazz students have been working hard preparing for the upcoming National Jazz Festival in Tauranga this Easter weekend, and their most recent performance at the Titirangi Music Festival on Friday evening showed just what a high standard they have achieved already!

Three Combos and the Avondale College Big Band will be performing at the National Jazz Festival held at Baycourt Theatre on Thursday and Friday. With 31 students involved, this will be the largest contingent Avondale has ever sent to the event!

The groups will also have the chance to perform at the Tauranga Farmers' Market on Saturday. Please come and support our groups if you happen to be in Tauranga over the long weekend!

AVONDALE COLLEGE BOARD OF TRUSTEES UPDATE Survey The Board of Trustees will shortly be canvassing opinions and feedback from our school community. Watch this space for your chance to contribute to the well-being of the school.

Vacancy Due to a recent resignation of a Parent Rep relocating overseas the Board of Trustees has decided to seek expressions of interest for a co-opted position.

The Board has a mandate to provide effective governance of Avondale College with our primary focus being student achievement and our aim of excellence.

The trustees meet monthly with sub committees also meeting monthly.

RESEARCH TRIPS FOR GEOGRAPHERS

Avondale's Year 12 and 13 Geography students had an extremely busy week in the field last week, collecting research data. The Year 12 Geography classes visited the Karamatura Stream on Wednesday and Thursday to check out the differences between the features of a river at the mouth compared to further upstream. Conscious of the rahui in the Waitakeres, we consulted with the local iwi, Te Kawerau a Maki, before organising the trip and they were happy for us to proceed.

The Year 13 students visited Muriwai beach on Friday and spent the morning in the sunshine measuring longshore drift and gathering data for beach profiles. The local cafe provided shelter from the heavy rain around lunchtime, but cleared for us to explore the Okiritoto end of the beach after lunch.

STUDENTS SEE MACBETH AT POP UP GLOBE Over 90 IGCSE English students had a fantastic trip to the Pop Up Globe to see Macbeth last week. Some took their positions as 'groundlings', standing in front of the stage, where they were right at the forefront of the action! Several sword fights and murders later, the students came away a little blood-splattered but completely enthralled by a Shakespearean tragedy being played out in front of them. It will certainly enrich their understanding of the play as they study it throughout the year.

YEAR 10 CIE CHECKPOINT TESTING MONDAY 9 APRIL - THURSDAY 12 APRIL A number of Year 10 classes will be sitting CIE Checkpoint tests in English, Science and Mathematics during Week 11. The tests are designed to provide feedback which will help families and students choose an appropriate academic pathway in Year 11.

Results and information on how to use them will be provided in Term 3.

SPORTS REPORT Monday 19th March – Sunday 25th March

ARCHERY The Avondale College Archery team competed in their final game of the season against Mt Roskill on Wednesday 21 March. They put forth a tremendous effort, winning 839 – 443. Our individual results were: Nuala Edmundson – 278, Grace Minturn – 235, Mereem Dewerse – 167 and Louis Duckworth – 159.

CRICKET Our 1st XI Girls Cricket team competed against Macleans 2nd XI on Wednesday 21 March. Macleans College chose to bat first and posted 50 runs at the completion of their 20 overs. In reply, Avondale College reached the target score in 10 overs without losing any wickets. Player of the day was stand-in Captain Ritisha Kumar who scored 21 runs and gained impressive bowling figures of 2 wickets for 3 runs in 3 overs. Final score: Avondale 52/0, Macleans 50/5.

The Year 10 Boys Cricket team competed in their final match of the season against Auckland Grammar Gold on Saturday 24 March.

Auckland Grammar batted first and scored 84/9. The boys played well, but fell short only attaining 68 runs, all out. The team had a great season, and we look forward to their development and progression in the Term 4 season.

The Year 9 Boys Cricket team also competed in their last match of the season against Glendowie College on Saturday 24 March. Avondale College batted second and managed to chase down Glendowie’s 123 runs in 20.4 overs. The final score was Glendowie 123/8; Avondale College 124/7. We are very proud of their performance this season and we were happy to get one last win!

TENNIS The Senior Girls Tennis match was cancelled due to bad weather.

They will play a catch up game this coming week against One Tree Hill College. We look forward to their result.

The Senior Boys Tennis match was cancelled due to bad weather, however, we look forward to their results as they compete in the upcoming Auckland Secondary Schools Tennis Championships on Wednesday 4 April – Friday 6 April to be held at Scarbro Tennis Centre.

WATER POLO

Avondale College's Boys Premier Basketball team defeated Macleans College yesterday to win promotion to the Premier Division of Auckland Secondary Schools Basketball!

The Avondale College Mixed Water Polo team had a close match against Birkenhead College on Sunday 25 March. The team played well, with several players scoring their first goals of the season, however, in the end we came up short, losing 5 - 7 to Birkenhead.

We have high hopes of developing the sport and expanding the programme in the near future.

SPORTS ACADEMY On Tuesday morning at about the time that many of their friends were hitting the snooze button, our Year 9 Sports Academy students were already working hard on the courts and fields of Avondale College. The basketballers were going through their paces inside the stadium, while out on the grass and netball courts, the hockey, football and rugby players, cricketers and netballers worked their way through the early morning fog, showing endeavour and tenacity with every step.

tomor row New Zealand Blood Service (NZBS) will be holding a mobile blood drive at: Avondale College Auditorium Thursday 29 March 9am-2.30pm Information for Parents, Guardians and Whanau It is important that we encourage students into a lifetime habit of donating blood and making a worthwhile contribution to their community.

The Care of Children Act 2004 allows people 16 years and over to make their own decisions about whether or not they wish to give blood. Students may choose to donate blood at this session.

NZBS recommends students discuss becoming a blood donor with their family. If families have a particular objection to the student choosing to donate blood please make this known to the student and to the school before the blood drive date stated above. More information about blood donation will be available on the day of the blood drive.

Parents are also welcome to come to the school to donate blood at this blood drive.

• You cannot donate if you have a cold, flu, sore throat, cold sore, stomach bug or any other infection.

• If you have visited the dentist for a minor procedure you must wait 24 hours before donating; for major work wait a month.

Travel: • You must not have lived in the United Kingdom, France or the Republic of Ireland between 1980 and 1996 for more than 6 months or received a blood transfusion in ANY of these countries since 1980.

• If you have been overseas recently, please refer to the “Donating after Travelling” tool available at www.nzblood.co.nz to find out when you can donate.

Food: You must have eaten some food during the four hours prior to donation.

Identification: You must bring suitable identification with you. Acceptable ID is a document or combination of documents containing three (3) separate identifiers (e.g. NZBS Donor ID number, Full name, Photograph, Date of Birth, Home Address). A Student ID Card is acceptable if it features a photograph and two of the identifiers listed above.

With your consent we may also ask the school to confirm you are at least 16 years of age.

Important Facts About Blood • There is no substitute for human blood—healthy donors are the only source of our blood supply.

• 42,000 patients are treated with blood or blood products in New Zealand each year.

• A blood donation is separated into different components, each of which is used to treat different patients—accident trauma, patients undergoing surgery, people with leukaemia, transplant patients and many others. Blood products are also used for immunisation to help prevent diseases such as hepatitis A and B, tetanus and chickenpox.

• Each donation is able to help save up to 3 people—blood donors are literally lifesavers.

TAUREWA CAMP 2018 Year 10, Year 12 and Year 13 students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp.

We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa Camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure.

Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to tell their parents early that their camps are coming up this year.
