Following five long months of participation in the New Zealand Biology Olympiad online tutorial programme and excellent results in their entrance examinations, Year 13 biologists Eric Huang, Jesslyn Chen and Leo Cekus have all achieved NZIBO Silver Awards and a place at the national camp in April.

The three Avondale students will join just 22 other students from around New Zealand at the camp, where they will collaborate with University researchers from Auckland and Massey Universities to explore a range of disciplines from cellular and molecular biology to physiology, ecology and evolution.

The opportunity to participate in this ten day residential camp has been inspiring and motivating for past students, connecting like-minded, highly talented students from across the country and exposing them to future career and study pathways.

The top four students as identified by theory and practical examinations at the camp will be awarded the NZIBO Gold Award and will be invited to participate in a research internship in the Great Rift Valley of Africa in July, where Mr Shawn Cooper will be the team leader. Congratulations and all the best for these three worthy students as they continue to achieve and impress!

POLYFEST - THIS WEEK! On Friday and Saturday almost 500 Avondale students will be taking to the cultural and diversity stages at this year’s ASB Polyfest, the largest Maori and Pasifika festival in the world.

Avondale College is once again bringing the largest number of groups to the festival with our record 14 groups including, (in a Polyfest first), a Mexican group made up of international students.

POLYFEST [CONT] (Continued from page 1.)

“It has been wonderful to see students from all different cultures taking part in the groups,” says Deputy Principal Mrs Lyndy Watkinson. “We have a German student in the kapa haka and a student from Hong Kong in the Niuean group.

We were also really pleased that our African group is involved once again.”

Taking to the Diversity Stage on Friday will be Avondale College’s Thai, Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Sri Lankan, Filipino, Fijian, African and Mexican groups, with the Samoan, Tongan, Niuean, Kapa Haka and Cook Island groups performing on their cultural stages on Friday and Saturday.

The community support for all the groups has been particularly outstanding this year, says Principal, Mr Brent Lewis.

“On Saturday there were hundreds of parents, teachers, tutors and former students at the College helping with the rehearsals, bringing food and making costumes. The experience of Polyfest for our students is very much about the whole process rather than just one performance on the day.”

This year is the 43rd anniversary of Polyfest. Last year over 90,000 people attended the festival, with over 9,000 students performing in 220 groups from 60 Auckland schools.

ARCHERY

The Avondale College Archery team competed in their third match of the season against Kings College B on Wednesday 7 March, losing 696-906. However, on a positive note, all members of the team shot better than the previous week and currently Nuala Edmundson is ranked 6th overall and Grace Minturn 14th in individual points.

ATHLETICS

Avondale College registered an incredible number of athletes to compete at the Central Western Zone Athletics Meet on Monday 5 March – 72. Our group of 72 was the second largest of the schools in attendance. Competing against 23 schools and 589 athletes, Avondale College managed to take 13% of the qualifying spots available (placing 3rd overall) and only a fraction behind Mt Albert Grammar and Auckland Grammar, who took 32% on the day.

Avondale College had many athletes just sitting on the outside of automatic qualifiers, and it is envisioned that over the coming few days and weeks, more of our athletes will be called up as timed qualifiers or reserve qualifiers.

Avondale came away with a total of nine individual first place winners across the competition, with Deja Rees taking double wins for her Shot Put and Discus, and Lex Revell-Lewis also doubling his wins with his 300m and 800m track events. Maclani Michael also took a double in her Triple Jump and Javelin. Our Intermediate Girls 4x100m relay team took a solid victory, proving themselves to be a force on the track.

Elli Morris and Maclani Michael are both well-seasoned athletes and came away with triple qualifiers each – incredible performances by these girls.

The standard of our athletic talent is fantastic, and we are working hard towards the vision of seeing Avondale College at the top.

The Year 10 Boys played against Western Springs Gold, chasing the target of 73 runs without losing any wickets. The boys bowled first and managed to take all wickets from Western Springs for 72 runs. The boys then chased it down without losing a wicket, winning by 73 runs, and taking ten wickets.

The Year 9 boys lost against St Kentigern over the weekend. The boys were all out for 60 after 21 overs. St Kent's caught us with 61/5 after 24 overs. Final score: Year 9 Boys 60/10; St Kents 61/5

CRICKET - GIRLS

On Wednesday 7 March the 1st XI Girls cricket team travelled to Waiuku for their weekly fixture. Waiuku College won the toss and elected to field first. Avondale College scored 111 runs in their 20 overs, with Diya Desai scoring an exceptional 62 runs, including one 6 and seven 4’s. In response, Waiuku College were all out for 56 runs in the 14th over as Radhika Shah picked up five wickets and was on a hat-trick in her second over. Avondale College won by 55 runs. The final result: Avondale College 111/5, Waiuku College 56.

NZ ATHLETICS

CRICKET - BOYS

The 1st XI Boys won against a previously undefeated Sacred Heart College in their season match on Saturday 10 March. All the team members put in an amazing performance. Captain Kevin Gattu Praveen was on the field for almost 75 minutes and faced 54 balls, scoring 51 runs and taking five wickets. Tinle Sherpa, our opening batsman, scored 30 runs, and the winning wicket was taken by Jay Patel. Final score, Avondale 162/10; Sacred Heart 157/10

Year 10 athlete Joanna Poland ran superbly in the final of the U18 women's 1500m at the New Zealand Track and Field Championships in the weekend, placing 11th. Grace Nweke (Year 12) also performed well and placed 7th in the U18 women's High Jump event. Congratulations to both girls!

ORIENTEERING

The Auckland Secondary Schools Sprint Series’ Western Zone third event was held on Monday 5 March at Green Bay High School. Liam Stolberger placed second overall in the Senior Boys division with a time of 13:20. He has continued to excel and place in the top tier since the competition has started. We are proud of his accomplishments.

SPEEDWAY

Kevin Gattu Praveen took five wickets and scored 51 runs in Saturday's victory over (a previously unbeaten) Sacred Heart.

Congratulations to Year 13 student Chris Kernohan who has just returned from Australia after winning the 2018 Webbcrete Australasian Junior Sedan Championship, going through the heats and final undefeated!

TENNIS

The Senior Girls’ Tennis team played a very strong Marist College side in their season match on Saturday 10 March. The girls lost 8-1 to Marist who look very likely to be grade winners. We look forward to a better finish in the coming week.

Our Senior Boys played Auckland Grammar on Saturday 10 March. In a tight contest we ended with a narrow loss, 4-5. We are certain they will come back in better form this coming Saturday against Lynfield College.

TOUCH

Our Senior Mixed Touch team played in their final games of the season on Monday 5 March. Although we ended on a loss in both games, 7-1 to Tangaroa and 4-1 to James Cook, they have shown much potential for next year’s team. Good effort, team!

VOLLEYBALL

The Senior Boys Volleyball team ended their regular season on a high note, winning all but one of their matches in the Central-West zone, putting them in good stead ahead of the Auckland Secondary Schools Championships last week. Seeded 15th in the tournament, the boys faced a tough draw, playing the second ranked Rangitoto College in their first match. Going down to a 0-2 defeat left the boys stung, but motivated to go on. Over the next two days, the team convincingly defeated Takapuna Grammar and outplayed Otahuhu College to secure a place in the top eight teams for Division 1. In their quarter-final match the boys faced the number one seed, Orewa College who defeated Avondale in straight sets and went on to win the AKSS Championship over Rangitoto College (3-1). Playing off for final rankings, Avondale gave it their all. Despite being shaken by two separate and unfortunate injuries putting both setters, Luai Filo and Sakaria Filo, out of commission with broken tooth and a rolled ankle respectively, the boys fought hard against De La Salle and Manurewa, narrowly losing both matches to finish the tournament in 8th position.

The boys should be extremely proud of their accomplishments, having secured a position in the Premier Division for next year's team. Newcomer Hapurona Clarke was named in the Tournament Team for his outstanding play, placing him in the top 16 out of over 340 male players in the tournament! International recruit Leonardo Sigismondi from Italy, also deserves special mention for integrating so smoothly into the team and showing determination on the court.

Great leadership was shown by Year 13 students Sakaria Filo, Christian Asovale Tanuvasa and Jacob Paiti whose tenacity and perseverance have left the team with the chance to continue climbing up the Premiership ladder next year. They will be missed. Mr Cooper is looking forward to seeing the remaining Year 11 and 12 boys develop their skills and passion for the game as we set our minds to the challenges ahead. Thanks to Taulima Fiso, Luai Filo, Jodytorina Laititi, Javaughn Nesi, Kyle Carzano, Mike Taufasia, Steven Ma'afu Ah-Chong, and Robert Justin Pascua for an outstanding season.

The Senior Girls volleyball team ended their season in high spirits after competing at the Auckland Secondary Schools Volleyball Championships which were held at Pulman Park, Papakura. The girls won a number of games during their weekly Central/West Zone matches and were well drilled and prepared to compete at the highest level.

The team improved as the tournament progressed, demonstrating a strong understanding of rotation and both technical and tactical aspects of the game. We faced Albany Senior High School, Howick College and Rosehill College in pool play. All teams proved to be strong on defence and were able to read our play. Each game we started off in the lead in the first set and taking most teams to three set games. Moving into play offs we came up against Takapuna

Grammar School, Glenfield College and Waiuku College. The girls did not disappoint but despite our endeavour and tenacity we did come up on the short end of a long fought battle, losing a couple games. We finished the tournament where we were initially seeded and could not have asked for a better campaign from the girls. Court structure and strategy, as well as the refining passing and serving was our focus for the season and tournament, and the girls left all they had out there.

Thank you to all staff, families and supporters who came to support our games.

The future is looking bright for both boys and girls volleyball programmes at Avondale College.

WATER POLO

Avondale College’s Water Polo Mixed team competed against Takapuna Grammar on Sunday 11 March. We ended on a loss, 15-2 to Takapuna. Despite the loss, the team played well and executed several new techniques they learned at training. New junior team member, Grace King, showed excellent defensive playing and Jordan Phillips scored an exciting goal in the last 30 seconds of the game.

ULTIMATE

The Avondale College Ultimate teams competed at the AKSS Ultimate Championships on Sunday 11 March. Both teams started off with great energy, and the girls' team came from behind to win their first game against Rutherford College. Unfortunately, the boys' team lost to Westlake Boys High School, but were proud to score some points against a strong team. The boys had a stand-out game against Manurewa College as both schools had a similar enthusiasm and the game was very lively. We came out on top with a close win. Overall the boys won two out of six games. They played for 7th/8th and by this point were exhausted. They fought hard but didn't manage to take out their last game, placing 8th overall. The girls won four games, but lost to rivals wWW Epsom Girls Grammar and Takapuna Grammar. This gave them a placing of FEATURING: 3rd overall. M.C. New Zealand Blood Service (NZBS) will be holding a mobile blood drive at: Avondale College Auditorium Thursday 29 March 9am-2.30pm Information for Parents, Guardians and Whanau It is important that we encourage students into a lifetime habit of donating blood and making a worthwhile contribution to their community.

The Care of Children Act 2004 allows people 16 years and over to make their own decisions about whether or not they wish to give blood. Students may choose to donate blood at this session.

NZBS recommends students discuss becoming a blood donor with their family. If families have a particular objection to the student choosing to donate blood please make this known to the student and to the school before the blood drive date stated above. More information about blood donation will be available on the day of the blood drive.

• A blood donation is separated into different components, each of which is used to treat different patients—accident trauma, patients undergoing surgery, people with leukaemia, transplant patients and many others. Blood products are also used for immunisation to help prevent diseases such as hepatitis A and B, tetanus and chickenpox.

• Each donation is able to help save up to 3 people—blood donors are literally lifesavers.

TAUREWA CAMP 2018 Year 10, Year 12 and Year 13 students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp.

We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa Camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure.

Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to tell their parents early that their camps are coming up this year.
