GABRIELLE SELECTED FOR COMMONWEALTH GAMES Former Avondale College prefect Gabrielle Fa’amausili has been selected for the New Zealand swim team to compete at the Commonwealth Games in Australia’s Gold Coast in April!

Gabrielle's selection will mean a small break from her tertiary studies; the talented swimmer is studying this year at the University of Georgia in the USA, where she was awarded a full scholarship.

Gabrielle made headlines as a fourteen year old when she won New Zealand’s prestigious Halberg Award for Emerging Talent. She went on to confirm that talent over the next few years, winning a string of records and awards. A two-time FINA World Junior Champion in the 50m backstroke, and a four time New Zealand Short Course Champion, she also holds the New Zealand record in the 50m backstroke.

We will be cheering her on when she takes to the Commonwealth pool in April!

Budding Shakespearean actors, philosophers, debaters, gardeners, indoor bowlers, musicians, dancers and more all had the chance to find their niche at the Join in @ Avcol event held in the Atrium at lunchtime today.

Hundreds of students took the opportunity to find out more about the many activities on offer here at Avondale, and with more than 38 stalls (not including the many sports groups!) there was something to appeal to everyone.

Students should keep an eye on the Daily Notices for more information about the groups they have signed up for.

WHOLE SCHOOL ATHLETICS DAY THURSDAY 8TH FEBRUARY The Avondale College Athletics Day is a great day on the school calendar and offers all students a chance to participate. It also doubles as the first part of the Avondale College Athletics Championships. Athletes who throw or jump past the set standard will qualify for the Championship Athletics Day to be held on Tuesday 20 February at The Trusts Stadium, Henderson.

All students need to bring a packed lunch, water bottle and sunscreen. Junior students can come to school wearing their PE gear; Years 11 and 12 should wear PE uniform or black and white sporting gear.

Should the day be postponed due to weather, an announcement will be posted on our school website www.avcol.school.nz.

2018 SWIMMING GALA Wednesday 21 February Students can register for the Avondale College Swimming Gala held at the West Wave Aquatic Centre through their homeroom teachers.

Registrations are due Wednesday 14 February.

We will be holding competitive and non-competitive races as well as our annual homeroom relays. Students who meet set standards for the competitive races will qualify to compete in the Central Western Zone Competition held on Tuesday 13 March.

Signed permission slips and the $5.00 fee is due on or before Friday 16 February and is payable to the Cashier or at the College Shop.

ABSENCES Parents/Caregivers must notify the College by 9.30am each day if their child is away. You can do this in several ways: a) Send a notification via Family Connection (preferred) • Log in to Family Connection • Select ‘Available E-Forms’ (at top left) • Click on Absence Notification • Fill out the details, save and submit.

You will receive a confirmatory email once the notification is approved. This replaces the need to supply an absence note to the home room teacher. b) Email the Attendance Officer: absences@avcol.school.nz. Please include your child’s full name, home room class and the reason for the absence. c) Phone the Absence Line: (09) 820 1071 Students are required to provide a written note Roberta Peteru for all absences, even after the school has been Attendance Officer notified by phone. This note must be brought on the first day of attendance after the absence and given to the home room teacher.

Parents will receive a text from the school if their child is absent from home room without explanation.

MUSIC LESSONS Students at Avondale College are fortunate to have the opportunity to receive tuition in a wide range of instruments, free of charge.

Lessons are held in small groups, and are available in flute, clarinet, saxophone, oboe, bassoon, trumpet, trombone, French horn, tuba, violin, viola, cello, double bass, popular and jazz guitar, classical guitar, bass guitar, drums, percussion, vocals (singing) and keyboard. There are also a limited number of individual lessons available on piano and students who have already learnt piano may apply for jazz piano.

The teachers are paid by the Ministry of Education and Avondale College provides sheet music without charge. Avondale College has a number of instruments available for hire at less than commercial rates, but once these are all in use students must hire or buy their own instrument.

To find out more, students should fill out the orange form (available from the Music Department) and deliver the signed form to Mr Stenbo at the Music Department as soon as possible. Once lessons are full, students will have to go on waiting lists.

MUSIC CO-CURRICULAR GROUPS Rehearsals for co-curricular music groups start in Week 3. Students who already play in a music group, or who would like to join one should check out the rehearsal times listed in the Music Department.

Groups include: Symphony Orchestra, String Ensemble, Taikaka Orchestra (all-comers band), Big Band, Jazz Combos, Soul Band, Choir, Vocal Ensemble, Rock Bands.

AVONDALE COLLEGE APP During the past few months we have been working with our student management software provider to develop a smart phone app for Android and iOS devices which mirrors some of the functionality of Family Connection. The app provides a wealth of information for parents and also acts as a point of reference for timetables and a campus map for students. The app was released somewhat prematurely and we are working through some essential changes to ensure that it provides a good experience for all. When tested and ready we will launch the app to the College community.

TAUREWA CAMP 2018 Year 13, Year 12 and Year 10 students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp.

We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa Camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure.

Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to tell their parents early that their camps are coming up this year.
