B AVCOL ACTORS WIN ENTRY TO NATIONAL SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL Avondale College Drama students gave an award-winning performance in the West Auckland heat of the Shakespeare Globe Centre New Zealand University of Otago Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival on Wednesday evening.

Avondale entered three pieces into the competition, with our senior Drama students 15 minute scene from Othello taking out the top award on the night and winning a spot in the National Festival to be held in Wellington over Queen's birthday weekend.

Also acknowledged on the night was Director of Drama, Miss Erica Newlands, who won the award for the Best Director for the scene from The Merchant of Venice, and Year 13 student Tegan Stinson who won the award for 'Most Promising Actor'.

The University of Otago Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival is organised by The Shakespeare Globe Centre New Zealand. Now in its 27th year the nationwide festival involves over 5500 students from more than half the secondary schools in New Zealand.

ECOLOGY FIELD TRIP Thursday the 5th April marked the fifth and final Ecology trip for Year 11 Science students this year. Accompanied by experienced staff, groups of students had been visiting two streams (Karamatura and Shadbolt Streams) in the Whau River catchment. Students completed chemical testing of the water and compared key differences in the organisms living in the streams. The goal was to collect information that identifies the impact of urbanisation (human influence) on the overall health of a stream. With the current health of waterways and streams in New Zealand, this year's Science cohort is well set to make choices that will benefit the environment in the future.

SPORTS REPORT Monday 2nd April – Sunday 9th April

ARCHERY

Nuala Edmundson and Grace Minturn competed in the Recurve Match Play Championships on Sunday 8 April. The series is comprised of individual matches with each round being a sudden death competition. Overall, there were 70 competitors. Grace managed to make it to the third round and Nuala went all the way to win a bronze medal. Congratulations to both girls on their remarkable performance.

ATHLETICS

From the Auckland CSA Championship event at Mt Smart, seven Avondale College athletes were successful in being named in the Auckland team to compete in Whanganui over the weekend of 7-8 April.

The Auckland Junior Boys 4x100m relay combination, which included Lex Revell-Lewis and Joshua Saluni, brought back the best result, placing 3rd in the North Island. Both Lex and Josh had a blistering sprint along both the straights, and demonstrated flawless baton exchanges.

We had some other outstanding performances, including Joshua Saluni on the Junior Boys 80m Hurdles, qualifying for the finals first and foremost, and then having a very near placing in the finals.

Deja Rees also had a great weekend, particularly in her discus event, throwing more than four metres beyond her previous personal best on her very first attempt! She also made it to the finals of the Senior Girls Shotput.

Lex Revell-Lewis also sprinted ahead with a new personal best in his 300m event. Running the fastest heat, the competition was very closely fought and Lex did well to place 5th with a foot injury.

It was fantastic also to see Dhanush Chandra make it to the finals of the Senior Boys Triple Jump, placing 8th in the North Island.

It was excellent to see seven Avondale College students competing at this North Island event (up from just one in 2017). The event was a great experience for our athletes, and we are looking forward to the second half of the season in Term 4.

CRICKET

The Avondale College 1st XI Girls Cricket team were undefeated and in first position at the end of the round robin matches. In the final, Avondale won the toss and elected to bat first at home against Waiuku College. The girls lost wickets in quick succession and were 21/3 after seven overs. Diya Desai and Hetanshi Chauhan batted until the end of innings to post a competitive total on the board of 88 runs. In the second innings, the rain came down but both teams wanted to play on, with Waiuku College hitting many boundaries and accumulating runs. At the completion of 20 overs, Waiuku just fell short, scoring 78 runs. Radhika Shah and Hetanshi Chauhan took three wickets each. It

was a very close match, with Avondale College winning the final! The girls worked hard all season, played exceptionally well and deserved to win their grade. The final score: Avondale 88/4, Waiuku 78/7.

NETBALL

The Premier 1 Netball team competed at the Auckland Pre Season Tournament on Sunday 8 April at Auckland Netball, St Johns. This was the team’s first competition of the season. The team represented the school really well as we won all five games on the day. We had a close match against St Kentigern College, the girls were down by four at half time, but through team work and determination we secured the win at the final whistle, winning 35 -31. The season ahead is looking bright for our netball programme. We look forward to following their progress!

ORIENTEERING

Liam Stolberger competed in the AKSS Sprint Finals on Saturday 7 April. Contenders competed in a morning race at Macleans College and an afternoon race at Unitec, Mt Albert. Times were collated for both races to determine the overall winner. Liam placed 1st in the morning race, ending with a time of 13:26; he then placed 3rd in the afternoon race with a time of 13:31. Overall, Liam placed 2nd in the competition, falling short of first place by just one second.

TAG FOOTBALL

On Thursday 5 April the Senior Boys’ Tag Football team headed to Moire Park to compete in the Central North & Western Tag Tournament. With a lot of senior students involved, the squad was ready to represent the College proudly. First up for the boys was a strong Rutherford College team. We managed to claw back a close victory to start the campaign off well. With an injury to one of the key students, the boys had to dig deep to secure the win. In our second pool game we faced a very fierce Lynfield College. The boys shot out to a quick 4-0 half time score, only for Lynfield to bring it back in the second half and make it 4-4 after full time.

After securing a semi-final spot we found ourselves up against a quality Massey side who had just drawn with tournament favourites, Kelston Boys. With a good solid warm up and focus switch from the boys, we came away with a dominating 12-3 performance to secure a grand final spot. This was the first time the boys had made the final of this tournament and the emotions were high. Finals time vs Kelston!

The battle of the West was on. With the boys already making history they were eager to carry on their unbeaten streak. With a close first and second half, the boys ended up winning the final 6-5 in a drop off! The Senior Boys now move on to the Auckland Champs. Special thanks to the Sports Department for their ongoing help.

TENNIS

The Senior Boys Tennis team played in their final game of the season on Saturday 7 April against Auckland Grammar. Although we had some superb individual play, we fell short, losing 6-3. Player of the day was Toby Barrett, one of our junior players. He won both his individual match against the second ranked player and his doubles match alongside Leo Cekus. Overall, the team placed 2nd in their division, which was an awesome achievement.

The Senior Girls Tennis team played Rutherford College on Saturday 7 April. We came away with a convincing 6-2 win, placing 3rd overall in the Western Zone competition for our division. Great work this season, girls!

ALUMNI: AVCOL AT THE COMMONWEALTH GAMES Alumnus Campbell Grayson is representing New Zealand once again at the Commonwealth Games in Australia.

Ranked No. 32 in the world, this is the squash player's fourth Commonwealth Games!

The Senior Girls Tag Football team also competed in the Central, North & Western Zone Tournament on Thursday 5 April at Moire Park, Massey. They started out the day with a close game against Waitakere College, but fell short 2-3. A change in attitude and drive was felt as they went on to play three more pool games, beating Auckland Girls Grammar, Massey High School and Lynfield all convincingly. They placed top in the pool and went on to face Auckland Girls Grammar in the final. With a tough defensive effort in the second half and a few tries scored, we ended the game on top, winning 3-2 to take home the title. It was awesome to end the day with both teams having won the tournament! We look forward to following their progress at the upcoming Auckland Secondary Schools Tag Football Championships.

Great North Road Footpath Renewal Works F Dear Neighbours,

From Monday 16th April, Auckland Transport and its contractor Fulton Hogan will commence concrete and footpath repair works on Great North Road. A plan showing the area affected by the works is attached at the end of this letter, and this work will take approximately 6 weeks (3 weeks each side) to complete.

Where: Great North Road When: Monday 16th April 2018 Time: Day Works, 7am to 7pm for approximately 6 weeks Please note these dates may change due to unforeseen circumstances or weather conditions.

Reasons for the work and what is happening?

As part of our ongoing road maintenance programme, we will be commencing concrete repair works on Great North Road. This work involves replacing the footpath and vehicle crossings.

How will it affect you? 

This type of road work involves heavy machinery which can create noise, vibration, and dust.



We will maintain industry best-practice methods to keep this disruption to a minimum.



When we are working, please expect some delays when accessing your property when machinery is working immediately in front of driveways.



During the works we ask that you please park either inside your property or well clear of the work zone.



For your safety, please keep young children and animals well supervised and clear of any work area.

The works will be undertaken as quickly and quietly as possible to minimise the number of days worked and disruption caused to neighbours. The works will be completed in accordance with the Auckland Unitary Plan.

TAUREWA CAMP 2018 Year 10, Year 12 and Year 13 students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp.

We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa Camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure.

Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to tell their parents early that their camps are coming up this year.
