B SILVER AWARDS FOR ALL OUR JAZZ BANDS AT NATIONAL FESTIVAL Avondale's musicians shone on stage at the National Jazz Festival in Tauranga over Easter - and have come away with a fistful of awards to prove it!

All three jazz combos and our Big Band received Silver Awards at the national competition an oustanding result for all 31 musicians involved!

The students also performed at the Tauranga Farmers' Market on Saturday morning, much to the delight of the crowd!

YEAR 10 CIE CHECKPOINT TESTING MONDAY 9 APRIL - THURSDAY 12 APRIL A number of Year 10 classes will be sitting CIE Checkpoint tests in English, Science and Mathematics during Week 11. The tests are designed to provide feedback which will help families and students choose an appropriate academic pathway in Year 11. Results and information on how to use them will be provided in Term 3.

AVONDALE COLLEGE BOARD OF TRUSTEES UPDATE Survey The Board of Trustees will shortly be canvassing opinions and feedback from our school community. Watch this space for your chance to contribute to the well-being of the school.

Vacancy Due to a recent resignation of a parent representative relocating overseas, the Board of Trustees has decided to seek expressions of interest for a co-opted position. The Board has a mandate to provide effective governance of Avondale College with our primary focus being student achievement and our aim of excellence.

The trustees meet monthly with sub-committees also meeting monthly.

SPORTS REPORT Monday 26th March – Sunday 1st April

ATHLETICS

With a full team of 23 athletes who qualified in the zone meets, the team headed to Mt Smart Stadium early morning on Monday 26 March to compete in the College Sport Auckland Athletics Championships. The athletes were eagerly anticipating a fantastic day of competition.

We came away with a staggering number of medals - eight - but more importantly, all these athletes were given the opportunity to contest the championship titles on offer. All in all, we were awarded three gold medals, three silver medals and two bronze medals.

Stand out performances were seen by Percy Maka with his win in both the Junior Boys' Shot Put and Discus throws.

Joanna Poland also showed an impressive display of middledistance running talent, winning her 1500m race by an incredible margin.

Lex Revell-Lewis showed great determination in his 800m run, but was just pipped at the post by an Auckland Grammar boy within the last few metres. His silver medal performance is still a fantastic result!

Dhanush Chandra dominated the Senior Boys’ Triple Jump event but just missed out on that gold medal in the final jump of the competition.

Maclani Michael also showed a strong performance in her Triple Jump event, placing 2nd overall and gaining another silver medal for her efforts.

Deja Rees, our Senior Girl thrower, had a great day, taking home a bronze medal for her Shot Put performance.

The Intermediate Girls 4x100m Relay team also came away with a bronze medal after showing speed, strength and clean batonchange technique in their race.

Congratulations to all students who competed and a big thank you to all the staff and families that helped in making it such a successful event!

SPORTS REPORT CONT. BASKETBALL

On Tuesday 27 March, Avondale College’s Boys Premier Basketball played Macleans College in a match where the winner would secure a place in the Auckland Premier Basketball Division.

Throughout the first two quarters Avondale and Macleans traded baskets, with the scores tied at half time; 42 all. Both teams’ supporters were in full voice, helping each side to bring out the best in their players. The scores remained this way until the last minute of the third quarter when Macleans opened up a seven-point lead. Avondale College dug deep in the final quarter with Captain Jaga Mete directing play. The entire squad put together a solid performance with the bench players showing that they are equals to the starting five. Avondale College dominated the final quarter 26-6, resulting in an 88-75 point win for the team and promotion into the Premier Division. A massive congratulations goes to the boys, their families and our coaches!

LAWN BOWLS

The Avondale College Lawn Bowls team competed in the Greater Auckland Lawn Bowls Pairs Championships on Monday 26th March at Carlton Bowling Club, Cornwall.

All three teams won two of the three games, however, they needed to win all three to progress to the knock out stage. Ryan Banks and Michael Knowles won their first two games and were six-all going into the last end of their 3rd games. They were holding the win until the Kelston Boys’ skipper played his last bowl and just got closer than Avondale's closest bowl by an inch.

Michael Knowles had the final bowl of the match to try and win the match, but unfortunately just missed. Despite not qualifying for the knock-out stages, the team really enjoyed themselves and are looking forward to building towards future events.

11:00, only 11 seconds behind first place. Accumulating all his races he placed 2nd overall with a score of 3950 in the Senior Boys division for the Western Zone. This qualifies him for the upcoming AKSS Sprint finals which will be held this coming weekend. We wish him all the best and look forward to his result.

ARCHERY

The Archery prize giving shoot was held on Wednesday 28 March 2018, the last shoot for the year for the College Sport Archery League 2018. Out of 101 recurve archers Avondale College had two archers place in the top 15 individual recurve competition.

Nuala Edmundson placed 6th overall and was the top woman archer. Grace Minturn placed 13th overall and was the third best woman archer. Both students have performed exceptionally well this season, and we are very happy with their achievements.

Congratulations to both students!

SWIMMING

Alex Dunkley took part in the New Zealand Ocean Swim Series over the weekend, The Big Tahuna, a 3km Swim which was held in Nelson. He placed 1st in the Under 14 age group (non-wet suit) with a time of 43:57 (overall placing 56 out of 390 participants).

Alex also took part in the Ocean Kids 200m Swim and not only finished 1st in his age group (11-12 years), but 1st overall. His successes secured himself a spot on the Jetstar Super Swim Squad Camp which will be held from Friday 27 April – Sunday 29 April 2018. We wish him all the very best in this exciting opportunity.

INDIVIDUAL ACHIEVEMENTS:

The 2018 NZ Division II Swimming Competition was held from Sunday 18 March – Wednesday 21 March in Rotorua. Avondale College was represented by swimmers Sam Charles and Jacob Laurence. Both swimmers performed exceptionally well. Jacob Laurence placed in the Top 10 for 100m Backstroke and 200m Backstroke in his division. Sam Charles received five gold medals for 200m Freestyle, 400m Freestyle, 4x100m Freestyle Relay, 4x100m Medley Relay and 4x50m Freestyle Relay. Alongside these medals he also obtained three silver medals in 50m Freestyle, 100m Freestyle and 4x50m Medley Relay.

The Senior Girls played a catch-up game against One Tree Hill on Tuesday 27th March. The girls played well but fell short in the end, losing 6-3 on the night.

Paige Weir competed in the National School Mountain Biking Championships which were held from Monday 19 March – Wednesday 21 March in Rotorua. She performed really well considering the competitive field of racers that were in her division. Overall, she placed 5th in the U17 Girls competition; an awesome achievement!

ORIENTEERING

On Monday 26 March, Liam Stolberger competed in the final AKSS Sprint Series for the Western Zone which was held at Rutherford College. He placed 2nd in the event with a time of

The National Schools Track Championships were held over two days, Tuesday 20 March and Wednesday 21 March at the Cambridge Velodrome. Holly Bliss from Avondale Collage raced in the Under 16 individual competition against a strong field of riders from all over New Zealand. Riders’ placings in three separate races are combined to give an overall result. Holly's best finish was a second place in the fast paced Keirin event where riders are paced behind a motorbike for three laps accelerating up to 40kph before the motorbike pulls off the track, leaving the riders sprint flat out for the more laps. Holly rode strongly in the other races, attacking the specialist sprinters to finish eighth overall.

TAUREWA CAMP 2018 Year 10, Year 12 and Year 13 students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp.

We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa Camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure.

Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to tell their parents early that their camps are coming up this year.
