ENVIRONMENTAL COUNCIL PLANNING DAY The Environmental Council Planning Day was held at school on Monday 27 November. A group of Year 10 students from the Council planned a series of activities and events for 2018. The day included team building activities on the school field and science classroom activities. The students then broke up into 4 groups to focus on:1. Planning lunchtime activities and quizzes to promote national Seaweek next year.

2. Organising a presentation to the new Year 9 students for 2018.

3. Creating a display board to advertise the work of the council to attract new recruits for our sign up at AVCOL day in Week 1.

4. Developing a poster.

We also discussed working closely with Keep New Zealand Beautiful. The students intend to enter national competitions run by the organisation on photography, film-making and story writing, all with an environmental theme.

The Council are looking forward to 2018 and hope to encourage new and existing students to become part of this inspirational group who are keen on making a difference to our local environment.

Minister of Education, Hon Chris Hipkins, yesterday announced that fees-free tertiary education and industry training is now a reality for first-time students enrolling in courses for 2018.

Who is eligible?

In summary – learners who are New Zealanders who finished school in 2017, or if they will be finishing school during 2018, qualify for fees-free. 9AM-12PM RE-ENROLMENT FOR ALL YEAR 12 STUDENTS On Wednesday 29 November eight Year 10 Maori and Pasifika students attended the BEAMS Day at the University of Auckland.

Science and Maths teachers were asked to recommend students who showed specific interest and aptitude in their subjects and the students spent the day participating in a series of activities and workshops in Business, Engineering, Architecture, Medicine and Science to learn about study towards careers in these fields.

The students found the day very informative and fun. As well as meeting students from different schools, they also met some great role models who acted as ambassadors for the different faculties at the University. The ambassadors were students who were studying towards, or who had just completed, their degree in one of the BEAMS areas.

SPORTS REPORT Last week was Summer Tournament Week and the final week of secondary sport for this year. With this in mind, this year we have had a total of 91 teams across the summer and winter codes here at Avondale College - 36 junior teams and 55 senior teams. We have nine teams who have won either the Zone or Auckland Championship competitions and two Winter Tournament Week Team Championship winners. We have incredibly high performing students who deservedly gain recognition for their efforts as they know exactly what it means to make every effort to win! So to finish the year, here is the overview of last week’s results: Monday 27th November-Sunday 3rd December

NZ SECONDARY SCHOOLS ATHLETICS NATIONALS

Saturday was jam-packed with events for the whole team. On the track, Joshua Saluni competed in the Junior Boys group 100m Hurdle heats, and ran fast enough to qualify for the Finals with a time of 16.78sec. Well done Josh! Joanna Poland was on the track again in the 1500m heats, and lay claim to a spot at the Finals on Sunday. Both Kudz and Elli were also back on the track in the 100m heats, Kudz achieving a new personal best of 12.79sec. Joanna also ran the 800m semi-finals after lunch, with the intense Hastings sun blaring down on the track. She qualified easily to move to the 800m Junior Girls finals.

Lex ran the 400m Semi-Finals late in the afternoon and came away with a fourth placing in his heat (not enough to make it to finals), with an overall ranking of #10 in NZ for Junior Boys (U16).

In the Field events, both Deja and Faith were at the Shot Put circle.

Deja clearing 11.21m, which is a mighty effort, and claiming #14 spot overall in NZ; and Faith clearing 9.27m with her shot in the Junior Girls group. Deja then moved on to the Discus circle throwing 28.30m, not near her personal best , but a great throw nonetheless. Taeao MannDelamere competed in the Senior Girls Triple Jump and cleared 9.01m to take the #20 spot. Well done. Tremayne Redman-Gardner was up next in the Junior Boys High Jump, and cleared a height of 1.60m.

Tremayne placed #19 overall.

The Junior Boys relay team had a good shot on the track, but the calibre (and build) of athletes competing within the Under 16 grade was incredible! The boys focus was to run a clean race and improve on their time from the weekend before. They ticked both those boxes with a time of 50.09sec. They managed to place #10 overall in NZ. Not a bad effort boys. Day 2 end.

For many of the twelve athletes that headed down to Hastings, it was their first experience of such a high level of athletic competition.

Friday saw the team compete. On the Track, we had our middle distance Queen, Joanna Poland up first in her 800m heats for the Junior Girls group. She took it easy to claim a spot at the semi-finals.

Lex Revell-Lewis also took to the track in his 400m heat, and he cruised across the line in first place, easily progressing to the semi-finals of the Junior Boys group.

Elli Morris (Senior Girls) and Kudz Honamombe (Junior Boys) contested the 200m in their respective heats, Elli clocking a brilliant time of 28.12sec and Kudz clocking 26.16sec which is a personal best for him. Both times were not quite enough to progress through to semi-final rounds unfortunately.

On the Field, Faith Faumui kicked off her competition with a Junior Girls Long Jump qualifying round. A jump of 5.10m would have automatically seen any of the group through to the Long Jump Finals, however, it didn’t work out as planned with a jump of 4.42m. Japsar Hipkins was also in the Long Jump pit and cleared 4.97m on his first attempt, which is a mammoth effort for him. Awesome work! Deja Rees took to the throws corner in the Senior Girls Javelin competition, and cleared 20.28m which is a personal best for her. She placed #17 in NZ. And lastly, we had Lomanec Ianga in the Throws Circle for Junior Boys Shot Put – Lomanec had broken a bone in his foot earlier in the week, so took to the circle with full moon-boot and all. Nothing was going to hold him back from competing and it was good to see him manage a decent attempt of 9.81m placing him #18 in the competition. Day 1 end.

Elli Morris - Long Jump Sunday kicked off early for the Field team, with Grace Nweke competing in the Junior Girls High Jump group. This was her first major event, and after clearing a personal best of 1.61m, her nervous energy took over and she couldn’t quite manage to jump 1.64m. Grace, however, did place #4 in NZ for her High Jump group.

Well done Grace. You are amazing! Jaspar was busy at the Triple Jump and cleared 11.14m which is a personal best for him. Nice work. Our Senior Girls group of Elli and Taeao both competed in the Long Jump with Elli achieving 4.83m, making her #17 in NZ. Well done girls. Lomanec hit the Discus cage with his moon-boot again in the Junior Boys group and did an amazing throw of 32.07m from standing position. He placed #19 in NZ (with broken bone and all).

On the Track, Jo ran her 800m Final and fought hard to the end in the morning heat, and placed in fourth position over all. Well done Jo. Joshua was up next with his Junior Boys 100m hurdles final and ran a fantastic time of 16.12sec placing him at #6 in NZ. Awesome work Josh! Jo was the final run of the competition, rounding off the meet for us with her 1500m Final. Jo started off very strong, keeping pace with some very strong and much bigger competitors. Jo placed #11 in NZ for Under 16 girls group.

The team bonded over the 5 days and 4 nights. What a fantastic group of ambassadors for our school and our sport. There were tears of disappointment, supportive hugs and cheers of encouragement throughout the competition. Team spirit was strong. The opportunity for them to be a part of this major event will be with them forever. This year’s group is fairly young and not as experienced in high level competitions as some of the other athletes from other schools, but the experience has served as a lesson of ‘potentials’ – individual athletic potential; daring to dream bigger; knowing it’s not that far from their reach; understanding what they will need to do to get there next year.

A big thank you to our Parent helpers as well, Roz Butler (Aunty Roz) and Peter Rees. We couldn’t have managed without you two. I’m grateful to Dr Brown for inviting me to be a part of this journey…it’s been months in the making, and I’m sad for it to be over. Looking forward to Dunedin 2018 already!

SPORTS REPORT [CONT] BADMINTON

The Junior Boys and Girls Badminton teams competed at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Junior Badminton Nationals in Newmarket. This was the first time NZ Badminton have hosted a tournament like this for junior students in Term 4 and Avondale College was the only school from the Waitakere region who registered teams to compete in this competition. The Junior Girls side played really well, and showed all their Heart values and gave great support to each other. The finals day saw the junior girls bring home silver after beating Central Hawkes Bay 4-1. This is the team’s first official tournament and they were extremely happy with their win.

The Junior Boys fought hard to the end, regardless what the end result was. The boys did win some sets in the doubles and singles rounds during the week and always kept in high spirits throughout. They were also very vocal and supportive of the girls in their final match. The boys’ competition overall was very tough, which led to them losing all their matches and ending the tournament in 10th place. The boys did manage to win some sets, including a doubles win from Christopher Tang and Ved Kulkarni against Central Hawkes Bay College and a singles win from Atul Kodla in the same game.

Overall, it was a great experience for the juniors to play and compete in a national tournament against some of the best badminton athletes in the country!

Junior Girls Badminton

TOUCH

The Junior Touch Girls competed in the Auckland Secondary Schools Junior Touch competition held at Bruce Pulman Park, Papakura. The girls had only eight players all season at the zone games, but were able to push through to qualify for this Greater Auckland tournament.

The girls finished 1st in their pool with games against Otahuhu and St Dominic’s College, and with all three teams on equal wins and losses, we were able to come on top in points’ difference. The girls then faced a strong Auckland Girls Grammar side in the quarter finals of the Cup competition later in the day. The girls played well but were beaten due to quick second half-tries by Auckland Girls. This resulted in our girls entering the Plate competition, which meant a semi-final match against Kaipara College. A solid start saw the girls take an early lead, but Kaipara fought back to lead 6-4 with just minutes remaining.

Some excellent individual brilliance by Angel Taulapapa Sopoaga saw Avondale score two tries in the dying seconds to take the game into extra time. With nothing between the teams, the game went to ‘drop-off’ play, where the sides were reduced to 5, 4 and eventually 3 players a side. Both sides utterly exhausted, Kaipara held onto the ball to score the winning try. Overall, it was a great competition for the young team and some useful big game experience as they left all that they had on the field, but retained the willpower to keep going and do the best they could for each other.

What all teams had in common during their tournaments was the HEART values that were present from the outset and throughout.

Being able to give maximum effort to achieve their goals, being kind and caring for one another, showing respect for self and the environment, and demonstrating perseverance and determination.

Sport can be the success of winning at all costs through to the feeling of heartache from a tough loss or can be simply the social aspect of being able to play sport amongst your friends for fun and enjoyment, there are many ways of describing what sport can mean to you.

Junior Boys Badminton

The Junior Girls got off to a great start against St Mary’s in their regular season match. Despite leading with three runs early on, a strong batting display by St Mary’s saw us fall short, with the final score 13-4 to St Mary’s.

ALUMNI IN THE NEWS The New Zealand Women’s Kiwi Ferns played in their World Cup final against Australia on Saturday. The New Zealand Women’s Coach Tony Benson selected a 24 strong squad for tournament which was held in Southern Sydney and Brisbane.

The Kiwi Ferns have won the World Cup three times before, in the years 2000, 2005 and 2008. A former student of Avondale College, Lilieta Maumau, was selected for this squad and was named in the starting lineup for New Zealand during pool play right through to the final where the team came up against Australia. The team fought hard to maintain the intensity throughout the game, mentally prepared for the long haul, strived for greatness and play as hard as they could right up until the final whistle. Australia finally won 23-16.

Saturday 20 & Sunday 21 January Lilieta is a member of the Otahuhu Rugby League Club which she co-coaches alongside Teuila Fotu-Moala who is also a Kiwi Fern. She has represented Counties Manukau who won the Rugby League Nationals for 9 years in a row and was named Most Valuable Player in that final. From there she was selected in the Kiwi Ferns squad who played in a 3 test series against Australia and then played in the ANZAC test against Australia in Canberra in May 2017 as well.
