YOUNG SPORTSPERSON OF THE YEAR AWARDS The College Sport Auckland Young Sportsperson of the Year Awards recognise outstanding achievement in sport. Congratulations to our two Avondale College nominees: Dacmen Vong (badminton) and Gabrielle Fa'amausili (swimming). After four weeks of competition, Avondale College has brought home the Auckland Secondary Schools’ Challenge Cup for Athletics! Our twelve athletes have absolutely smashed the competition across all events, beating 45 other secondary schools to win the Cup by an accumulated total of 2329 points – that’s 1380 points ahead of the next school, Mt Albert Grammar! The win puts the team in good heart as they head to Hastings this weekend for the National Secondary Schools competition. Good luck, team!

INTERNATIONAL ACTIVITY PROGRAMME For the past three weeks, the International students have been involved in an action packed activity programme. Some of the programme has been in school and every department has offered a range of activities including Tai Chi, Outdoor Education, Samoan cooking, making Christmas crafts, learning Maori and Samoan culture, dancing, karaoke and drama to name just a few of the activities. The students really enjoyed the range of activities that they wouldn’t normally take part in back in their home countries. The students were also offered some fantastic opportunities to go on many field trips and experience the beautiful outdoors by taking part in sailing, kayaking, windsurfing, rock climbing, visiting Waiheke Island and a day trip to Coromandel. A huge thank you to the International staff and teachers for organising such fun filled last few weeks for our International students, many of whom will be travelling back home to join their families in their own countries very soon. This has been a great way to finish their New Zealand experience. We wish all our International students a safe journey home and hope they have had a wonderful time with us here at Avondale College.
COLLEGE SHOP We are now buying second hand uniforms. We only purchase good quality, clean and washed second hand uniforms from parents only. No Year 13 uniform is purchased. THE COLLEGE SHOP IS OPEN MONDAY TO FRIDAY FROM 8.15am - 1.30pm, selling the Avondale College uniform for boys and girls, including socks and 50 Denier pantihose. The Avondale College uniform is only available from the School College Shop, which is located in the Atrium, beside Reception. A layby service is available until the end of December (No layby in January). EFTPOS facilities are available (AMEX not accepted). SPORTS REPORT Monday 20th November to Sunday 26th November
We are drawing close to the end of the Term 4 summer season, with many teams competing in the play-off rounds. This week is Summer Tournament Week, with Badminton, Touch and Athletics all competing in their Auckland and national tournaments throughout the week. Results to come - watch this space!
ATHLETICS
Saturday's Round 4 of the Secondary Schools Cup Challenge was the final opportunity to seal the deal on our points win over the 45 other secondary schools contesting the Challenge Cup... And we did it! Avondale College won the competition with 2329 points, Mt Albert Grammar placed second with 949 points, and Macleans College third with 743 points. The final flurry of athletics action saw the team compete in both the Track and Field plus one opportunity to run the relays for the Junior Boys. Field: For our Jumps team, Grace Nweke placed first in her U16 Women’s High Jump, clearing a PB of 1.60m. Tremayne RedmanGardner competed in the 14 Boys High Jump, clearing 1.55m and placing 2nd in his group. Our triple jumpers, Taeao Mann Delamere and Jaspar Hipkins both had opportunities to compete in their age grades. Taeao cleared 9.33m, looking good ahead of Nationals, and Jaspar cleared 10.00m exactly.
transition seamlessly. Relays are notorious for silly mistakes and disqualifications. It was reassuring to see the boys run perfectly. Their time of 50.59sec is a good starting point, and we hope to reduce that further in order to qualify to subsequent rounds while at Nationals. The points table paints a crystal clear picture of the strength and commitment the team possesses to keep them at the top for all four weeks of the challenge. What sets our athletes and school apart from the rest is the fact we went into this challenge as a ‘team’. We supported each other, we cheered each other on, and the athletes took great pride in representing their school. I certainly hope the athletes have gained confidence during this series of local competitions and feel more prepared for the biggest athletics meet on the calendar for them – NZ Secondary Schools Track & Field Championship, Hastings Dec 1-3. CRICKET
Our Throws team saw Deja Rees throw 11.30m in Shot Put, placing 2nd in the U18 Women’s grade and Lomanec Ianga throwing 10.34m to place 1st in his U16 Men’s grade. Well done, team! Track: The 100m was contested by five of our athletes. Faith Faumui placed 2nd in her 14 Girls’ grade with a time of 13.61sec and Elli Morris placed 3rd in her U18 Women’s grade with a time of 13.99sec. Lex Revell-Lewis placed 1st in his Grade 13 boys 100m with a time of 12.74sec. Jaspar Hipkins and Kudz Honamombe both also ran the 100m, with Kudz clocking 13.15sec and Jaspar not far behind with 13.35sec in the 14 Boys grade. Lex Revell-Lewis also won the 13 Boys grade 200m, with a time of 25.30sec – a new PB for him. Elli Morris’s 200m sprint saw her set a new PB time of 27.97sec. Well done to our sprint team! Kudz Honamombe, a relative newcomer to athletics, gave the 800m a go (for the first time ever), placing 2nd in the 14 Boys grade with a super time of 2:26.70min. Well done, Kudz!!!
1st XI Boys’ Cricket Team The 1st XI Boys’ last game of the season was against Kristin School and as both teams were undefeated, this game promised to be challenging. Avondale College batted first and were all out on 99 runs in 34 overs. Thareeq Saldhan was the top run scorer in his last match for Avondale College. Kristin School reached the target score in 21 overs, losing three wickets. Avondale College lost the match by seven wickets. This was the team's first loss of the season; however, Avondale College still finished the season at the top of Pool 1 for their grade. Our Year 9 Boys lost to Mt Albert Junior 2. The boys scored 130 all out, which was matched by Mt Albert with five wickets to spare.

MASSEY UNIVERSITY YEAR 10 TASTER DAY
Junior Girls Champions!
On Wednesday 22 November nine Year 10 students spent the day at Massey University having a taste of University life. Students attended two workshop/lectures each and Avondale students had a taste of study in the following areas: Sports Science, Careers in Business, Media Studies, Creative Writing/English, Food Technology, Engineering, Nursing and Science. The workshops were designed to engage the students and to give them insight into potential subjects they might want to pursue. The photo shows our students building a windmill in the Engineering Workshop.
The Junior Girls Volleyball A team had two playoff games vs Onehunga and Waitakere. Our girls approached the games with confidence knowing they had outworked and out-enthused all the teams in the regular league games so far! Their confidence was not misplaced, with the girls winning both games convincingly without dropping a set. The win capped off a year where the girls trained hard, had loads of fun and improved week in, week out. Their dominance showed as they didn’t lose a single set all season! The foundation has been laid for Avondale girls’ volleyball to return to its status as one of the premier programmes in the Auckland region. Outstanding all year were Uso Ofati, Aso Williams, Chelsey Whiu and Maria Ofati. Grace Ana and Mele were consistent all year and the most improved player was Tikenati Raion. The Junior Girls B side played off for 7th spot against Lynfield and Green Bay 1. A great effort was given by the B side, who beat both teams to end the season in 7th place overall.
ALUMNI NEWS Congratulations to former student Malik Meriouli who won the Year 3 Apprentice of the Year Award at the ITAB Building Apprenticeship Awards last week! Malik was part of our Gateway Programme in 2014 where he took the opportunity to see what it was like to be a builder. Malik worked with Hargraves Homes Ltd and loved it. Following that, Malik was offered an apprenticeship with PW Construction Limited. He has worked with the same company since the start of 2015 and last week he won the Apprenticeship of the Year. award. We are very proud of him – he’s a wonderful Gateway success story!
