Gabi received the Secondary School Sportsperson of the Year Award, and Kanah the Junior Sportswoman of the Year as well as the Maori Achievement Award. Also recognised was cricketer (and former Avondale College student) Jeet Ravel, who won the Sportsman of the Year Award.

The Trusts Sport Waitakere Excellence Awards are the premier sports awards for West Auckland. The awards celebrate the success and achievement of West Auckland in the sporting arena across all roles in sport. This is the 21st year the awards have taken place and are the only awards in the region that include the celebration of secondary schools.

SPORTS REPORT Monday 13th November to Sunday 19th November

ATHLETICS

Round 3 of the Secondary Schools Cup Challenge saw a full squad in attendance this week. The team arrived fully kitted out in their Avondale College tracksuits and athletic singlets, with hearts full of pride. This meet started very late (6pm) and our athletes had to brave the elements as they competed in their events late into the night.

Field: We had four of our girls involved in the long jump – Faith Faumui, Elli Morris, Taeao Mann Delamere and Angel Taulapapa Sopoaga. We also had four boys at the long jump pit – Joshua Saluni, Kudz Honamombe, Jaspar Hipkins and Tremayne Redman-Gardner, with a standout performance by Joshua Saluni who placed 1st in his age group with 4.86m. Given the miserable conditions though, the team did really well, with the girls having to jump well after 7.30pm as the night chill settled in.

In the throws circles, Deja Rees placed 2nd in her U18 Women’s Shotput with 10.65m and 1st for her U18 Women’s Discus. Lomanec Ianga placed 1st in U16 Men’s Shotput with 9.60m and 1st in U16 Men’s Discus with 33.08m. As you can imagine, it’s difficult to throw in wet conditions – slipping a discus - or an ankle - is common when wet, so this is a fantastic effort team!

Track: For our track girls, the 60m Sprint was contested by Faith, Angel and Elli – with Elli placing 2nd in the U18 women’s grade. Angel then went on to compete in the 100m Sprint, clocking up a fantastic time of 14.14 for the Grade 14 girls. Joanna Poland, our middle distance hero, ran a confident 1500m run, claiming victory (again) over some tough competition. She cleared first place with 4:49.36min, with second place only one second behind with 4:50.43min. Again, the conditions for this race were wet and miserable, but clearly Joanna was not fazed.

CRICKET

The 1st XI Boys Cricket team had an away game at Long Bay College on Saturday 18th November. Avondale College won the toss and sent Long Bay College in to bat. Long Bay were all out in 27 overs, scoring 101 runs. An impressive bowling and fielding performance was displayed by the whole team with the highlight of the game being Ethan Reinecke and Aidan Carey's outstanding catches.

The boys all ran the 60m, with Lex Revell-Lewis placing 1st and Joshua Saluni placing 2nd in the Grade 13 Boys group. Jaspar Hipkins, Kudz Honamombe and Tremayne Redman-Gardner ran some fantastic times. Lomenac Ianga placed second in his U16 Men’s race, improving on his last 60m performance. Joshua ran the 100m Sprint, winning his age grade in 13.43s, and Jaspar, Kudz and Tremayne all contested the Grade 14 boys’ grade, pushing their previous 100m times. Lomanec placed 3rd in his 100m Sprint with a time of 14.47s. Special mention goes to Lex and Jaspar who both ran the 400m well into the night, waiting until 9pm in cold, wet and dark conditions. Lex placed 1st in Grade 13 boys and Jaspar 3rd in Grade 14 boys.

Rain delayed the start of the second innings but Avondale College batsmen Lathira Fonseka and Arsalah Azimi made easy work of the target runs needed, reaching 102 runs to win in just 15 overs.

Avondale College won by eight wickets and still hold their top placing in Pool 1 with the final game at home against Kristin College.

The final Saturday meet on 25 November is to be held at the Trusts Stadium, from 2.30pm and will see the Junior Boys Relay team take their first opportunity to shake up the competition. High jump and triple jump are back on the cards as well as javelin for our throws team. The 100m and 200m glamour events will also be on show. We should see a full team again, and hopefully the Challenge Cup will be there for us to bring home to Avondale. Feel free to come and support the team and our amazing athletes – this is the last local competition before we head to Nationals in Hastings. Good luck team!

VOLLEYBALL

The 2nd XI Cricket Boys had a 27 run win over Auckland Grammar Senior Gold. After winning the toss and opting to bat first, the boys hit a total of 157 all out. Kennedy Nikolaison was the top scorer for the day with 27 runs. The boys then bowled Auckland Grammar all out for 130 runs, with Parth Tailor the best bowler, 19/2. It was a brilliant all round team effort to secure the win.

The Junior Girls Volleyball A side rounded off their weekly season in some style, defeating Green Bay and Auckland Girls Gold to finish the Western Schools Volleyball Zones undefeated. Great performances were given by Chelsea and Uso. However, the Junior Girls B side lost both their games to Waitakere College and Onehunga High.

Junior Boys A defeated Mt Roskill Grammar in straight sets before losing out to Auckland Grammar in their second match of the day.

AUT JUNIORS PROGRAMME

Tuesday 12th December

On Thursday 16th November ten of our Year 10 students spent the day at AUT Auckland Campus as part of the AUT Junior Programme. The programme was designed for students to learn more about themselves, their leadership style, personality traits and how they work in a team. Students were put into groups with students from other schools and encouraged to work and cooperate with each other for the day. The students really enjoyed the day, meeting new friends and learning more about themselves.
