B SPORTS AWARDS DINNER Avondale College celebrated the success of our amazing athletes at the Sports Awards Dinner on Friday evening.

Held in the Performing Arts Centre, the evening was a wonderful celebration of all teams and individuals who have made such an impact in their sports this year.

The audience enjoyed hearing guest speaker and former student, Matthew Wyatt, speak about his journey in athletics - from his time at Avondale College, through to his captaining the New Zealand team at the Nitro Athletics competition earlier this year.

Congratulations to all who received awards at this special event, notably our top award winners, Gabrielle Fa'amausili and Dacmen Vong who won the Jason Twigg Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Sport.

CRICKET The 1st XI Boys Cricket team played at home against Mt Roskill Grammar School. It was a rainy and cloudy Saturday morning so the match started a few hours later than scheduled.

Mt Roskill Grammar were bowled out in 20 overs making 46 runs. Good bowling performances were given by the leading wicket takers, Jay Patel, Ben Kelsey and Thareeq Saldhan. Then in came Avondale's opening batsmen, Kevin Gattu and Lithira Fonseka, who reached the target score in just six overs. Avondale College won by 10 wickets!

It was a very good performance by the whole team and a great win to start the season.

The 2nd XI Boys game vs Auckland Grammar was abandoned.

Year 9 Boys lost against Glendowie College, scoring 54 runs all out.

Glendowie scored 59 runs with 7 wickets to spare.

TOUCH Junior Boys lost 6-0 vs Rutherford.

Junior Boys lost 6-1 to Kelston Boys.

Junior Girls lost 7-0 in their first match of the round against Waitakere College. However, the second game of the day saw the girls turn over their loss, with a 14-0 win again Henderson High School.

IPAC 2017 Subject based Individualised Personal Academic Course (IPAC) tutorials will run from Monday 6 November to Wednesday 22 Nov. Senior students who have been invited to attend have received information from their teachers and by letter.

IPAC starts with an assembly in the PAC, at 9am on Monday 6 November.

NADIA LIM VISITS FOOD TECH CLASSES A number of our Food Technology and Hospitality students were lucky enough to have a very special visitor to their classes yesterday.

Former student Nadia Lim spent time chatting with students and demonstrating some of her recipes, all the while communicating her passion for healthy, good food.

With the combined junior classes, Nadia showed how to make the little lemon cupcakes featured in her new book, Let's Eat! Senior students were fascinated to watch Nadia whip up an amazing eggless meringue - using her secret ingredient of the liquid from a tin of chickpeas! She also showed how to make a sugarless jam using raspberries and chia seeds, all while chatting about her journeys in food, publishing and presenting - as well as some of her memories of Avondale College.

The students were fully engaged in both sessions - with all who asked questions going in the draw to win a cookbook at the end of the lesson!

Students left feeling enthused and inspired - and we look forward to seeing more foodie entrepreneurs emerging from our food tech classrooms in the future!

ORBIT DANCE SHOWCASE The Orbit Dance Showcase was a spectacular event, with 26 dances performed by more than 300 students to sold out crowds on Wednesday and Thursday evenings last week.

With dance styles encompassing Bollywood, hip hop, classical, contemporary, K-Pop, jazz and more, there was a phenominal amount of talent on stage, and the high standard of the performances made obvious the many, many hours of hard work that has taken place in our dance studios this year.

Of particular interest were the dances performed by our superb Scholarship candidates, whose thought-provoking pieces tackled complex issues such as eugenics, the fragility of life, greed, and the stereotyping of gender roles.

TAUREWA CAMP 2017 Year 13, Year 12 and Year 10 students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp. We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure.

Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to tell their parents early that their camps are coming up this year.

The Junior girls won by two sets to nil; 25- 21 and 25 - 23. Avondale was behind for much of both sets but when crucial points were contested, the superior passing skills and attention to detail with serving and receiving gave the girls an edge. Outstanding for Avondale was Maria, Chelsea, Ana and Aso. The B team also played MAGS, eventually losing in straight sets. Outstanding for Avondale was Shakinah Yasmin and Siggy.

GENERAL • The first three days of exams involve Year 9 & Year 10 students.

• Year 9 exams are in Social Science, Mathematics, English and Science and Languages.

• Year 10 exams are in Social Science, Mathematics, English and Science and in option subjects.

• Year 10 option exams run according to student’s timetable.

• Most exams are two hours, but not all.

Exams will run for periods 1 & 2 and periods 4 & 5.

• Normal timetable runs period 3.

• If an exam is not two hours then the students involved will be required to wait in the classroom until the two hour time period is completed.

• On Friday 4th November periods 4 and 5 will be normal timetable classes for Year 10. For Year 9 the morning will be normal timetable.

• Science, Mathematics, Social Science and English exams are two hours.

• Option exams for Year 10 only are on Wednesday morning as well as Thursday morning and afternoon.

• No study leave is given to junior students during these exams.

• No permission is given for appointments during the exam days.

• A medical certificate will be required for an absence from an exam due to illness.

• When sitting exams, normal school discipline applies.

• All junior home classrooms have been changed to the same as their exam for the core exams.

• Exams are to start promptly at 9.15am in the morning and 1.15pm in the afternoon.

EXAMINATION ROOMS In the exam room: • Sit in rows as instructed.

• Leave bags where directed.

• Make sure your cell phone is switched off and in your bag. It is not allowed to be in your pocket.

• Please ensure that the exam room is left in the appropriate state as to which it was found. This means checking that desks and chairs are set correctly, no writing on desks has occurred and any rubbish is put in the classroom bin. This is vitally important as staff and students have spent time presenting rooms in a particular way.

TO FIT WITH NZQA CONDITIONS a) Students’ should not use twink. It is in their interests to write legibly. b) There is no food or drink in the exam room, except a clear water bottle which must not be labeled c) Students are advised to take only clear pencil cases into the exam room.

• The exam begins the moment distribution of papers starts.

• Total silence is necessary from then on.

• Listen carefully for additional instructions or correction of misprints.

• Check that you have the correct paper with all pages correctly printed.

• Read instructions carefully.

• During the examination, students must not communicate with other candidates, copy from another candidate’s work, borrow any equipment or make undue noise or disturb other candidates.

• No student is to leave the exam room until full time has expired.

• Uniform and appearance must be of the required standard.

• If a student needs to go to the toilet during an exam, this is allowed. Before they go, a mark will be made on their exam paper showing where they left, and the student will be asked to indicate where their cellphone is. If they have a cellphone on them, they are two leave it with the examiner, to be returned at the end of the exam.

Examination irregularities and misconduct will be considered by Mr J Smith (Qualifications Manager) and Dr Brown (Deputy Principal Curriculum, NZQA Principal’s Nominee) and may result in disciplinary action. If this occurs in an internal NZQA assessment the consequences may involve NZQA.

A homestay family is expected to provide a clean and comfortable bedroom with bed, wardrobe and drawers, linen and towels, desk and lamp, heating in the room, meals and laundry.
