Our Niuean students promoted Niuean Language Week last week, starting with our Monday assemblies by speaking in Niuean and running a highly entertaining kalaga (call) competition!

Thursday lunchtime saw a very special Niuean Market Day take place in D Block, where students sold chop suey and rice, takihi, coconut bread, raw fish and drinks. This event was a great success, thanks to many parents helping to make the traditional food. The Niuean Group will be making a donation to a charitable organisation and the rest of the fundraising will go towards our Niuean Polyfest group for 2018.

Well done to our students for their planning and enthusiasm in promoting their beautiful Niuean culture to students and staff at Avondale College!

MESSAGE FROM THE POLICE: ROAD SAFETY CONCERNS Avondale College has been advised by the Avondale Police that they have recently received a number of complaints about dangerous student pedestrian behaviour when crossing Ash St into Avondale township. The complaint is that students, from both Avondale College and Avondale Intermediate, are intentionally walking across the road when cars have the green traffic signal, and hence cause traffic to be disrupted. Not only does this block the traffic flow, but it also places the pedestrians at risk of being struck by a car.

We would urge students to take more responsibility for their behaviour when crossing the road. This includes using pedestrian crossings to cross the road, and checking that it is safe before crossing. This might sound simple, but sadly teenagers are the age group most at risk when crossing the road, and this is mainly due to their complacency when doing so.

The police have advised that they will be closely monitoring the situation on these road crossings to ensure the safety of our students.

AVONDALE COLLEGE’S PERFORMING ARTS ACADEMY PRESENTS

The New Zealand Social Science Conference (SocCon17) for teachers took place in Napier over the holidays, with a focus on developing global citizens who think globally and act locally. Teachers from all around New Zealand took part in the conference sessions and workshops, and our very own Head of History, Ms Clementine Fraser shared her expertise on teaching the Treaty of Waitangi.

The next SocCon conference will take place in Auckland in 2019 and is being organised by Avondale's Ms Jacky Lee.

ORBIT DANCE SHOWCASE The 2017 Dance Showcase: Orbit is on this week! The show runs for two nights, Wednesday and Thursday (25 & 26 October) at 7pm in the school theatre.

Tickets are $2 each (or 3 for $5) and are available at the door.

TAUREWA CAMP 2017 Year 13, Year 12 and Year 10 students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp. We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure.

Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to tell their parents early that their camps are coming up this year.

GENERAL • The first three days of exams involve Year 9 & Year 10 students.

• Year 9 exams are in Social Science, Mathematics, English and Science and Languages.

• Year 10 exams are in Social Science, Mathematics, English and Science and in option subjects.

• Year 10 option exams run according to student’s timetable.

• Most exams are two hours, but not all.

Exams will run for periods 1 & 2 and periods 4 & 5.

• Normal timetable runs period 3.

• If an exam is not two hours then the students involved will be required to wait in the classroom until the two hour time period is completed.

• On Friday 4th November periods 4 and 5 will be normal timetable classes for Year 10. For Year 9 the morning will be normal timetable.

• Science, Mathematics, Social Science and English exams are two hours.

• Option exams for Year 10 only are on Wednesday morning as well as Thursday morning and afternoon.

• No study leave is given to junior students during these exams.

• No permission is given for appointments during the exam days.

• A medical certificate will be required for an absence from an exam due to illness.

• When sitting exams, normal school discipline applies.

• All junior home classrooms have been changed to the same as their exam for the core exams.

• Exams are to start promptly at 9.15am in the morning and 1.15pm in the afternoon.

EXAMINATION ROOMS In the exam room: • Sit in rows as instructed.

• Leave bags where directed.

• Make sure your cell phone is switched off and in your bag. It is not allowed to be in your pocket.

• Please ensure that the exam room is left in the appropriate state as to which it was found. This means checking that desks and chairs are set correctly, no writing on desks has occurred and any rubbish is put in the classroom bin. This is vitally important as staff and students have spent time presenting rooms in a particular way.

TO FIT WITH NZQA CONDITIONS a) Students’ should not use twink. It is in their interests to write legibly. b) There is no food or drink in the exam room, except a clear water bottle which must not be labeled c) Students are advised to take only clear pencil cases into the exam room.

• The exam begins the moment distribution of papers starts.

• Total silence is necessary from then on.

• Listen carefully for additional instructions or correction of misprints.

• Check that you have the correct paper with all pages correctly printed.

• Read instructions carefully.

• During the examination, students must not communicate with other candidates, copy from another candidate’s work, borrow any equipment or make undue noise or disturb other candidates.

• No student is to leave the exam room until full time has expired.

• Uniform and appearance must be of the required standard.

• If a student needs to go to the toilet during an exam, this is allowed. Before they go, a mark will be made on their exam paper showing where they left, and the student will be asked to indicate where their cellphone is. If they have a cellphone on them, they are two leave it with the examiner, to be returned at the end of the exam.

Examination irregularities and misconduct will be considered by Mr J Smith (Qualifications Manager) and Dr Brown (Deputy Principal Curriculum, NZQA Principal’s Nominee) and may result in disciplinary action. If this occurs in an internal NZQA assessment the consequences may involve NZQA.
