B CANNED FOOD DRIVE SUPPORTS CITY MISSION A core group of Safe School Leaders have been involved in collecting canned food from the students and staff of Avondale College to donate to the Auckland City Mission. In all, 22 boxes of food were collected, delivered and donated to the Mission to contribute to the 13,000 food parcels they give out to struggling Auckland families each year.

This project was a Safe School Leader driven student initiative to give service to the greater Auckland community.

Safe School Leaders were amazed at the scope of work that the Mission does to help Auckland families and the homeless, which includes feeding 120 homeless people twice a day, providing food, clothing, furniture and Christmas presents for families in financial hardship, a medical centre, pharmacy and legal services.

As part of the initiative, a pizza lunch will be provided in Term 4 to the class that donated the most food, and this year's winners were 9SIL. Well done and thank you!

The key students involved in organising and running the collection with the School Counsellors were: Jasmine Wight, Christyanna Saufoi, Julie Toimoana, Jaria Manase, Jecheala Manase, Saisha Shahi, Ashellyn Xavier, Alana Rae, Cate McIntosh, Israel Levi, Geniqua Samupo and Perosi Roma.

NINE NOMINATIONS FOR SHOWDOWN AWARDS! It's the high school equivalent of the Oscars - and Avondale College students will be walking the red carpet after receiving nine nominations for Rock of Ages High School Edition in the Showdown Awards.

Thirty-two Auckland high school musicals and plays are in the running for awards this year, and Avondale College's show is amongst the top two most nominated musicals.

The winners of each category will be announced at a special awards evening to be held next Thursday evening at the Sky City theatre.

Tempo Dance Festival On Sunday 15 October the Avondale College Senior Contemporary Group spent the day in Queen Street's Q theatre preparing for their performance in Ignite! 2017. The show was run by the Tempo Dance Festival and gave our students the opportunity to represent the College in a professional performance. The dancers enjoyed working with industry professionals and students from other schools and dance companies. The dancers were: Lauren Catley, Danielle Twentyman, Cate McIntosh, Claudia O'Neill, Akiho Kamamura, Bella Brough, Helena May, Sasha Matsumoto, Coretti Tuffs, and M'Ryah Atama.

Dance Scholarship: Filming Day On Thursday 28 September the Dance Scholarship students spent the day in the school theatre working with a group of 35 dancers and a team of technicians, to produce dance works on the stage. The students worked to create conceptual pieces at the highest level, that incorporated full lighting and costume design and production. Each Scholarship student was supported by groups of dancers from Years 9 13. The choreographers now turn their attention to the accompanying portfolio for submission in November. The dance works will feature in next week's Dance Showcase: Orbit next week.

Dance Showcase: ORBIT The 2017 Dance Showcase: Orbit is on next week! The show runs for two nights, Wednesday and Thursday (25 & 26 October) at 7pm in the school AVONDALE COLLEGE PRESENTS theatre. Tickets are $2 each (or 3 for $5) and are available at the door. The programme incorporates contemporary dance, hip-hop, jazz, ballet, and cultural forms of dance (including K-Pop, Pasifika styles, and Bollywood!) and is not to be missed!

FARMING SPORTS DAY AT ROSEBANK PRIMARY

HOMESTAY FAMILIES NEEDED

Students from 12PES led a fun, farming-themed sports day at Rosebank Primary in the last week of Term 3. This was as part of their Year 12 course, towards their Achievement Standard: Examine the implementation and outcome(s) of a physical activity event or opportunity.

Our students did a fantastic job, working tirelessly to ensure each group had a great time. In total our students interacted with the entire primary school - 18 classes and almost 500 kids!

Avondale College International Department is currently looking for new Homestay families for 2018, for short and long-term stays.

You may like to include a student in your family life, or perhaps you know of someone who would like to - a friend, relative or retired couple. The experience is enriching and rewarding for both students andhomestay families.

What is the expectation of a homestay family?

A homestay family is expected to provide a clean and comfortable bedroom with bed, wardrobe (built-in or free-standing) and drawers, linen and towels, desk and lamp, heating in the room, meals and laundry.

What is the benefit of hosting a student?

Girls in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Our 'Avondale STEMsters' were inspired by a public lecture held for students interested in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics at the University of Auckland on Friday 6th October.

Dr Natalie Batalha, an astrophysicist at NASA Ames Research Center and the project scientist for NASA's Kepler Mission, spoke on "A Planet for Goldilocks: The Search for Evidence of Life Beyond Earth".

Dr Batalha holds a PhD in Astrophysics from the University of California, Santa Cruz and is one of the leading scientists in the search for planets outside our own solar system. In 2011, Batalha led the team responsible for the discovery of Kepler-10b, the mission's first confirmation of a rocky planet outside our solar system and in 2017 she was named one of Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential people.

Dr Batalha gave an overview of the science legacy of the Kepler Mission and preview of future missions now on the drawing board. The 'STEMsters' met Dr Batalha after the presentation and talked to her about how she got to where is today.

Congratulations to our following students for their outstanding achievements during the school holidays.

Avcol alumna Sammie Campbell (who was the lead in Avcol's production of Hairspray last year) said "I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do" when the producers of Mamma Mia! came calling. She will take on the lead role of Sophie in ATC's production in March next year. In the meantime, Sammie will be joining forces with another ex-Avcol student, Kristine Paulse, in ATC's production of Sister Act next month.

KIRSTY YALLOP STEPS DOWN FROM FOOTBALL FERNS

Paige Weir – Mountain Biking Competed in the North Island Secondary Schools Nationals Tournament in Tauranga where she won the U16 Girls category.

Minamh Onions competed in the Synchro Swim NZ National Championships held in Invercargill where her team won the Aqua Combo Team Category and won the Bronze medal for their performance, competing against teams from around New Zealand.

Kiahn Simons-Tipau, Jacob Tuala-Dawson and Christian Waihape Ah Van competed in the Northern Region Maori Rugby Tournament which played over three weekends from the end of term through to the weekend and finished second, after losing to North Harbour Maori U17 in the final.

Tiffany Sua Year 12 and Crystal Ruddell Year 10 have been selected for the NZ U19 Training Squad for the 2019 U19 Lacrosse World Cup to be held in Petersborough, Canada. This is a two year campaign where all athletes will train and the final squad of 18 will be chosen.

TAUREWA CAMP 2017 Year 13, Year 12 and Year 10 students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp.

We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure. Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to tell their parents early that their camps are coming up this year.

Football Fern Kirsty Yallop is stepping down after a 13 year career with the national side. The Football Ferns - now established in the world’s top 20 – have made staggering progress since Yallop’s first cap in 2004.

“It’s been an amazing journey, filled with ups and downs. I’ve been so proud to be a part of this team and now I just want to start to focus on other things in life and enjoy my last year or two of playing football."
