B ROCK OF AGES Rock of Ages opened to a great crowd last night who rocked along with the diehard 80s rock ballads and unfolding drama on stage! The story, as told by narrator Lonny Barnett takes us to the Bourbon Room, an infamous rock venue and bar on the Sunset Strip of Los Angeles. Here we meet Drew, an aspiring rock star who hopes to make it to the big stage - but to get there he first has to prove himself to be more popular than Stacee Jaxx, long time rocker and lead of Arsenal. Meanwhile, the Sunset Strip is threatened by developers. Oh, and then, there's Sherrie... SENIOR REPORT EVENING NEXT WEEK Tuesday 26 September Avondale College’s Senior Report Evening will be held on 26 September, in the College Atrium from 4.30pm to 7.00pm, giving parents the opportunity to meet with teachers to discuss the progress of their child. The online booking facility for this evening is now available on Family Connection until 24 September. Once bookings close, appointments can only be made manually by students using the form posted out with the report.

NEW LOOK SEARCH FOR LIBRARY Searching for the books you want in our library has just become a whole lot easier! The library search screen has been enhanced and searching has now become a lot more visual. The new browse page is designed for students to discover items easily. General lists give suggested reading in the categories of New Items, Highly Rated, Popular and Recently Returned. When logged in, students see additional categories such as Recommended for You, Matching Your Interests and Because You Borrowed. The library home screen has also been upgraded to provide easy access to research databases, eTV, eBooks, newspapers and other online resources. All of these online resources are available to students 24/7 through the school intranet page.

ECONOMICS COMPETITION SUCCESS Congratulations to Richard Ren (Year 13) who recently competed in the University of New South Wales Business and Economics competition and achieved outstanding results. Richard placed in the top 15% with a Distinction result for Australian and New Zealand participants in both Economics and Business Studies. He also sat the New Zealand competition for Economics through the University of Auckland in which he achieved a High Distinction. Richard placed 60th out of all students in New Zealand doing Economics (approximately 3000 students), putting him in the top 5% of all participants.

Congratulations to Year 13 student and 1st XI Football Captain, Molly Flynn, whose tournament-winning final game for Avondale College has brought to a close an outstanding career of college football. In her five years of playing for the Avondale College 1st XI Football team Molly has played 113 times, missing only two games in five years! Molly's achievements for the college are impressive. Having come through the Sports Academy Football programme as a junior, she was named MVP and the Best All Round Girls Footballer in both Years 9 and 10. She then won a Board of Trustees Scholarship of Achievement in Sport in Year 11, and was named Avondale's Senior Girls Footballer of the Year in Year 11 and Year 12. Having captained the team for the past two years, this year she led the team to both promotion and a tournament win. It has been a journey of success that Molly says she has thoroughly enjoyed. "Football has always been - and will continue to be a massive part of my life. I love the competitive environment and the feeling of success which comes along with playing football. I love learning and perfecting new skills and plays and it has led to me to meeting some of my closest friends." We wish her well in her next steps both on and off the football field!

Congratulations to Olympic Weightlifter Kanah AndrewsNahu, who snatched 86kg and clean and jerked 105kg to break all of her New Zealand Youth and Junior records in the under 75kg class at the recent Commonwealth and Oceania Championships. ROTARY AWARDS 2018 The Bill Rodwell Rotary Award is to assist senior students to further their education at Avondale College. It is made to Year 11 or Year 12 students who have been fully involved in school activities, who have done well academically and intend to return to school for one or two years of further study. Family financial circumstances are taken into consideration. This year, three awards of $200 will be awarded. Application forms can be obtained from the main office or the Careers Department and should be handed in to Mr Goold when completed by Friday 22 September.
TTCF ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIPS Due to the generosity of The Trusts Community Foundation we are able to award the following scholarships to our Year 12 and 13 students who are planning to study at tertiary level in 2018. • 26 x $3000 Degree Scholarships • 13 x $2000 Diploma/Certificate Scholarships - can include pre-trade courses • Applicants must have a good academic record and have made a contribution to school and/or the local community • Must be a New Zealand permanent resident The scholarship is to be used towards course fees and students must study in 2018. Application forms are available from the Careers Department and applications close on Tuesday 26 September.
TAUREWA CAMP 2017 Year 13, Year 12 and Year 10 students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp. We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure. Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to tell their parents early that their camps are coming up this year.
