B TE WIKI O TE REO MĀORI MĀORI LANGUAGE WEEK It's Māori Language Week - in class we have been making school resources in Te Reo Māori and teaching our classes traditional Maori Arts including: Tītī tōrea, Tī Rakau and Poi. The students have been hosting lunchtime demonstrations and playing traditional Māori games such as Pātokotoko, Tutukai and Kurawiniwini.

NADIA LAUNCHES BOOK AT AVCOL Avondale College's atrium was the perfect space for welcoming home former student Nadia Lim for the launch of her new book, Let's Eat. Students from our Hospitality classes had been hard at work during the day preparing a selection of delicious treats from the new book for guests to sample - including her 'Chorizo, Tomato, Courgette and Haloumi Skewers', bitesized 'Pizza Supreme' and 'Real Malasian Satay' skewers, followed by 'Wicked Coffee, Toffee and Walnut Slice' and 'Luscious Lemon Cheesecakes'. The showcase of superb Avondale talent continued with live music from two of our jazz combs, which added real atmosphere to the event. Organised in conjunction with Paper Plus, the sold-out crowd enjoyed listening to Nadia chat about her life and journey - from her Avondale College days through to her latest adventures. The evening was an inspiring and entertaining one, and we look forward to Nadia's return to the college in October, when she will spend time with our Food Technology classes.

PASIFIKA TALANOAGA Avondale College was once again delighted to host a special dinner for our Pasifika community leaders on Tuesday night to celebrate and discuss further ways of supporting the success of our Pasifika students. After a superb meal together, Deputy Principal Lyndy Watkinson presented the achievement data of our Pasifika students which continues to track well above national averages for all New Zealand students. Guests then heard from four senior students who shared their powerful stories of challenge and triumph as students at Avondale College. The discussion that followed endorsed the work that our teachers do to promote Pasifika success, and it also provided valuable food for thought for our next steps. We look forward to continuing to work alongside our church leaders, community leaders and families, to support the further success of our Pasifika students.

Progress reports for all our senior students will be posted to families in the next few weeks. Please remember that copies of student reports are available when you log into Family Connection and click on ‘Documents’ under the Student Information tab. Avondale College’s Senior Report Evening will be held on 26 September, in the College Atrium from 4.30pm to 7.00pm, giving parents the opportunity to meet with teachers to discuss the progress of their child. The online booking facility for this evening will be available on Family Connection from Monday 11 September until 24 September. Once bookings close, appointments can only be made manually by students using the form posted out with the report.
TTCF ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIPS Due to the generosity of The Trusts Community Foundation we are able to award the following scholarships to our Year 12 and 13 students who are planning to study at tertiary level in 2018. • 26 x $3000 Degree Scholarships • 13 x $2000 Diploma/Certificate Scholarships - can include pre-trade courses • Applicants must have a good academic record and have made a contribution to school and/or the local community • Must be a New Zealand permanent resident The scholarship is to be used towards course fees and students must study in 2018. Application forms are available from the Careers Department and applications close on Tuesday 26 September.
BILL RODWELL ROTARY AWARDS 2018 The Bill Rodwell Rotary Award is to assist senior students to further their education at Avondale College. It is made to Year 11 or Year 12 students who have been fully involved in school activities, who have done well academically and intend to return to school for one or two years of further study. Family financial circumstances are taken into consideration. This year, three awards of $200 will be awarded. Application forms can be obtained from the main office or the Careers Department and should be handed in to Mr Goold when completed by Friday 22 September.

SPORTS TOURNAMENT WEEK NGÄ€ HAKINAKINA WHAKATAETAE Football Boys 1st XI
The very first game of the tournament saw us go down 3-1 to Hamilton Boys where we learned that the level of football here is a step-up from what we have faced this year! Mistakes were punished and lessons were learned! A first goal for the College for Amanuel Molla in this one.
The 1st XI boys placed 21 out of 32 and with a little more luck along the way could and should have been higher. Nonetheless, a 4 wins 3 loss return from the tournament is fantastic! Football Boys 1st XI- Park Island Napier NZSS Lotto Tournament Date Opposition

Second game of the tournament saw us come up against Scots College of Wellington who are full of players training with the Wellington Phoenix 1st team! A much better performance saw a tight 2-1 loss, with a goal from the halfway line for Harry Semp! The opposition coach was full of praise for our boys who matched a very strong Scots team throughout the game.

It was a much better morning on day two from a sunny Napier. Up against Macleans from the Auckland premier division, the boys came flying out of the blocks and scored two early goals through Joao Abreu and Ben McGregor. The pressure continued all half until a momentary lapse saw Macleans pull one back on the stroke of half time. A strong second half performance was rewarded with a 3rd goal from the penalty spot, Tobias Holthuis-Spann tucking it away, twice, after being ordered to retake for encroachment! A real boost for the boys’ confidence, which really showed that they are ready for the challenge next year.

Our afternoon match against Waimea went as expected with the boys grinding out a 4-1 win. Justice Michael scored a hat trick and Colin Holthuis-Spann the last goal. Wednesday afternoon brought a tough game against organised opposition. The margins were fine at this unfortunately two small mistakes meant the boys went against St Peters Cambridge who are coached by former Coach Ricki Herbert.

We fought hard against a spirited Francis Douglas College team and goals from Justice Michael and Joao Abreu secured a 2-1 win, setting up a 21 vs 22 place match up in the final game for the tournament against Mt Albert Grammar. The final game of the week against local rivals Mt Albert Grammar was played out at a somewhat slower pace than normal! A dismal first half saw the boys go in 2-1 down with a goal from Ben McGregor. A rallying half time team talk woke them up and they scored a further two goals (Ben McGregor again and Harry Semp) to secure bragging rights with a 3-2 win.

Football Girls 1st XI
The Girls 1st XI Football team had a good start to the tournament against Aquinas School of Tauranga. They were very tentative for the first ten minutes but then got to grips with the opposition and the very large playing pitch. A final result of a 5-0 win, with goals scored by Che Stockenstroom (hat-trick), Brooke Whiu and Alyssa Jeffs. As we approached the kick off against Pompallier on Wednesday, the rain came down with all its force. Not the most ideal conditions as the subs and supporters took cover under trees and shelter. The girls were not put off and battled through the elements to win 5-0. Brooke Whiu 2, Jamie-Lee Clay, Alyssa Jeffs and Maclani Michael were all on the scoresheet. The 6th and final game of the group matches for the girls was against Glendowie from Auckland. It was not for lack of trying but just a shot too far. The result was a 0-0 draw with Glendowie which left the girls in 2nd place overall (from 20 teams) and a place in the semi finals. An all Auckland semi-final saw the girls overcome Lynfield College 3-0 with goals from Brooke Whiu, Alyssa Jeffs and Che Stockenstroom. It was a very good performance with all 16 players having a good part in the game.

A big battle awaited the girls in the final against Bethlehem at Toll Stadium on the final day of the tournament. Both teams were unbeaten all week and had yet to concede a goal. Within two minutes the ball went wide to Brooke Whiu who went round the opposition at pace and delivered a perfect ball across the goal mouth and behind the opposition defence. Che Stockenstroom attacked the cross but was just short of reaching it but coming in on the far post was Jenna Dullabh. Jenna had great composure and set herself up perfectly to side foot the ball into the net. It was a perfect start for Jenna on her 17th birthday! The good start got even better as the girls followed that up with two more almost identical moves in the next ten minutes, resulting in goals from Brooke and Che. 3-0 up and our defenders had not yet touched the ball. The girls did not back off for the rest of the game and although they did not score again they kept the Bethlehem team under constant pressure throughout to take out the final 3-0. They also went without conceding a goal in all eight games of the week. It was a fantastic effort from all 16 girls and a great send off for the Year 13 girls in their last game, especially for Molly Flynn after her five years in the 1st XI and the last two years as Captain. Hockey Boys 1st XI
Day 1 saw us matched up against James Hargest College from Invercargill, who came second in their inter-school competition this season. With a good start and by playing well as a team we secured a 2-1 lead at half time. The boys dug deep defensively in the second half to peg back the lead again after an equaliser early on and gain a satisfying 3-2 win against probably the toughest team in our pool. All three goals were scored by strike forward, Oliver Cornelius.

Nik made a valiant save of their last PC and we closed it out, holding the 2-1 victory. Placing 2nd in our pool of four came the Auckland Derby in the quarter-final versus Pakuranga College. After a very positive team talk back at the ranch, the boys displayed a calm cohesion in the first ten minutes. Impressive control from Tilo under the high ball was a pleasure to watch, amongst plenty of solid work from all team members, including fierce defence from Sam and Zac. Some scrapping in the circle gave Alex a short opportunity. Quick push, 1-0. Barely three minutes later, a beautiful feed from Sam to Alex, a smashing blow, and a massive celebration. 2-0 and well deserved. We dominated the rest of the game, as Alex scored triumphantly to secure a 3-0 win and placement in the semis. The tremendous spirit shown by the boys bought us within a glimpse of the silverware. A hard fought battle against Southland Boys in the semi-final all the way unfortunately resulted in a 1-2 loss after we were up 1-0 at half time. The boys played exceptionally well and showed our HEART values at all times. We played the Plate final vs Cashmere High from Christchurch on the final day. The boys were competitive in attack in first half, relinquishing a soft goal after 20 minutes. We equalised just before half time. An absolutely brilliant save by Nik Whitehead from a dubious penalty stroke 1 on 1 kept us in the game. However, it was not to be our day, and we went down 1-2 again, just as in the semis. Final placing: 4th out of 13 teams. The boys represented Avondale outstandingly on and off the field and can be proud of their tournament result! The second game of the tournament was against Cashmere High. The teams were closely matched but good linking in our mid-field saw us hold the majority of possession in the first half. Ollie combined nicely with Lewis and Alex to produce a sweet field goal from a rapid surge forward down the right, out-smarting their defenders. However, a little moment in defence caught us napping and they equalised to 1-1 at half time. The boys were very competitive in the second half for long periods of exciting hockey. The fighting spirit came through and our attack was relentless, with Tilo and Ollie showing solid leadership with their communication, forcing a foot at their end to give us a nicely executed equaliser from a variation PC by Ollie. We held them out once more before this really good spectators' game ended. A fine but windy westerly afternoon put us up against local hard men, Buller. A little complacency and over-confidence forgot about their strong centre and a lightning counter- attack put us down 0-1, very much against the run of play. Then the action started with a nice feed from Ollie on target that Alex flicked up nicely into the net; initially

Hockey Girls 1st XI
Hockey Girls 1st XI- Chica Gilmer Trophy, Whangarei
We began the tournament with a comprehensive win, beating Botany Downs 7-0. We were up 2-0 at half time, with Ruby Coombes scoring both goals. We came out even stronger in the second half with our three Year 10 Academy girls making their mark on the scorecard. Goal scorers: Renee Fowler 2, Jayla Fletcher 2 and Paige Weir 1. Game 2 saw us come up against a tough Pakuranga side and winning 1-0. Our goal was scored by Ruby Coombes in the first five minutes; we then played heavily defensively for the remaining 55 minutes in 20 degree sheltered heat. The pressure was on the girls to maintain the intensity throughout, with Grace Carr-Shepheard having a fantastic day as goalie, saving many attempted shots. Day 3 saw us take on Mahurangi College in the first quarter final of the day. Both teams came out firing in the first half and our strikers were throwing everything they had at their goalie; however, Mahurangi fought hard to beat our structure and scored, leaving us 1-0 down going into half time. Despite huge efforts all round in the final 30 minutes, we were unable to hit the back board to convert, giving Mahurangi the win. The Wairua was definitely felt throughout the team and management. Words cannot describe how gutted our team felt and we are extremely grateful for the parental support we had on the sideline and in our dugout after the match. Day 4 saw us take on Mt Albert Grammar who we have also played during our weekly season, twice winning one game a piece. With injuries and sickness kicking in we were rolling subs every 3-5 minutes to get fresh legs on the field. Another close encounter saw both teams attacking and defending strongly. MAGS took two attempts at goal on reverse stick, with the second being the winner. We had the opportunity in the last minutes of the game to draw the match and go into overtime for a winning result off PCs but came out second best in the end. The final match of the tournament came in the 7th vs 8th place final against Sir John Paul College. The girls were amped for the match despite having already played out five difficult games. In the end a 4-1 win saw the girls finish in 7th place out of 20 teams. It was a great week rounded off with a wonderful result.

The boys tried extremely hard but were beaten 5-0 against Hamilton Boys' College in their opening game of the tournament. This was followed by another 5-0 defeat at the hands of Auckland Grammar 1. Dacmen Vong managed to win both his single games. The boys played against Westlake Boys High 1 and unfortunately lost 1-5, with Dacmen winning his single game. The boys finished in 8th place and played extremely hard. Our New Zealand rep, Dacmen Vong, had enough points by himself to bring the team into Division 1, having won all of his singles games. The girls managed to secure two wins in their opening two games: 6-0 against Napier Girls' College and St John Paul College. This was a great start to the competition. The ladies played Waikato Diocesan on Tuesday morning and won all their games (6-0) in very close matches and with good rallies. The afternoon match against St Oran's College was a thriller with the girls edging through 4-2 winners. The Avondale ladies changed their game strategy by changing who they would play with and it worked. This was to ensure they gained lots of points. The girls were through to the final of the tournament against New Plymouth and it was a classic. 3-3 draw on games and 7-7 in matches, the final came down to points and our girls secured gold by a 3 point margin 246-243. Showing great HEART values all week, the girls also qualified for the 1st Division. Badminton Girls- NZSS Championships, Napier Date Opposition

Basketball Premier Boys
The boys got off to a great start against Kristin School before allowing Kristin back in the game. The boys showed great heart and pulled together for a 66-51 win. The boys next faced their biggest rival of the season St Peter's College. Over the season the boys had played them three times, winning one and losing two, including the final. The boys were determined to get a win over them but a bad first quarter put the boys 15 points down. They fought back to be within 3 points with three minutes to go. Unfortunately the boys ended up going down 92-86. The second day saw Avondale face national champions Rangitoto College. The boys played a brilliant game throughout, having the lead half way through the second quarter. However, their experience and New Zealand rep players meant that Rangitoto pulled away to a 12051 win. All of our team got a lot of court time and the bench players played brilliantly. The boys then played Birkenhead and had a comfortable 85-72 win. This secured third place in the group and a playoff match against Manurewa High School. A loss against Manurewa saw the boys finish in 13th place out of 23 teams.
TAUREWA CAMP 2017 Year 13, Year 12 and Year 10 students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp. We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure. Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to tell their parents early that their camps are coming up this year.
