B MATHEMATICS COMPETITION SUCCESS It has been a busy term for our mathematicians, with a number of them achieving great success in national and international competitions. Avondale College participated in the Auckland-wide Aurecon Bridge Building competition for the fifth time this year, with students coming up with some creative designs that were then tested to breaking pont! Our Year 10 group of Arc Porcioncula, Tommy Ong and Rohan Sharma (pictured below) won the award for the best digital design.

Sixty-three students from Year 9 to Year 11 participated in the University of Otago Junior Mathematics Competition, which is one of the most influential mathematics competitions in New Zealand. Twenty-seven of our students received Merit awards or above. Our top result was Top 30 in the country, (JooYeon (Julie) Jeong). This is the most students we have had awarded top 200 or above in this event in the past five years. Two teams at each Year 9 and Year 10 were selected to participate in the Auckland Mathex Competition run by the Auckland Mathematics Association on 23 August. Our four teams achieved at a very high level: our top Year 9 team placed 5th, and the other teams also achieved high scores. They all made Avondale proud! This year about 60 students signed up to do the Australian Mathematics Competition organised by the University of South Wales in Australia. Congratulations to Ryan Moore who was awarded High Distinction after achieving in the 99th percentile. Fourteen students were awarded Distinctions at Junior level. Five students were awarded Distinction at Intermediate level and two awarded Distinction at Senior level. Congratulations to all who have done so well in these competitions! 48 HOURS FURIOUS FILMMAKING COMPETITION An intrepid group of 22 Avondale College filmmakers took up the challenge to write, shoot, cut and survive New Zealand's largest guerrilla filmmaking competition last weekend. Adding to the mayhem were the random components that were only divulged at the start of the competition. Our fearless team was given the genre of crime and told to select a theme from a list (fate) and that our short film must include a female character, the film technique of a smash cut, and the Waldheim scream. Our script writers came up with an intriguing idea for a story and the following hours were a bit of a blur as the team plotted the narrative then spent two intense days shooting, reshooting and editing. Our film starred Jaedin Sears and Channah Wynn-Wilson. Texas Shepherd proved himself in the directorial role, and was ably assisted by Areeba Moton and James Millington. Jahn Vega, TJ Tepu and Areeba Moton did a fantastic job editing. Overall, it was a great group effort and a successful student collaboration that we managed to hand in with 14 minutes to spare! Thanks to the teachers involved and to Mr Lewis for allowing us once again to have the run of the school. As usual not much sleep was had, but we were able to keep going with energy generated by Ms Medland's amazing cooking.

Year 13 prefect Shereen Lee has won a place on an international delegation that will be heading off on a month-long world tour as part of the UN Youth Global Development programme in January next year. As part of the group of 22 high achieving Year 12 and Year 13 high school graduates, Shereen will be attending the prestigious Columbia University Model United National Conference and Exposition. In addition, she will tour the UN headquarters, meet high profile international diplomats, and travel to London, Paris, Berlin, Rome, Geneva and Copenhagen to learn more about the UN Sustainable Development Goals. It's an exciting opportunity for the 17 year old, who has been involved in the Youth Model United Nations for several years, in addition to her other involvement in Avcol activities such as the Environmental Council and Safe School leadership. "I'm really looking forward to going to New York," she says, "as well as meeting other Model UN students from all over the world."
YEAR 10 DRAMA If you had seen some of our Year 10 Drama students after class last week, you might have thought some terrible catastrophe had befallen them! However, the bullet holes, bloody wounds and gashes were - fortunately - makeup effects that the students have been learning as part of their NCEA Performing Arts Technology Standard: Demonstrate knowledge and techniques of makeup application for a performance context. The students had a great time designing makeup for a character that they had created for a drama piece that was of a particular genre – horror, scifi, fantasy, or action - with spectacularly gruesome effect! This gives each student four Level One credits to take into their first year of NCEA.

ALUMNI NEWS: SELINA TUSITALA MARSH APPOINTED NZ POET LAUREATE Congratulations to Avcol Alumni Selina Tusitala Marsh who has been appointed New Zealand's Poet Laureate. The celebrated poet-scholar was the first Pasifika student to graduate with a PhD in English from Auckland University, where she’s now an Associate Professor lecturing in creative writing and Pacific literature. The New Zealand Poet Laureate is a poet appointed by the National Library of New Zealand to represent New Zealand's community of poets, to promote and advocate for poetry, and to produce a number of published works during their two-year tenure as laureate. SPORTS REPORT Week 5 - Sports Report 21 to 27 August
Basketball
After a stunning win in the semi-final play offs match against Liston College, the Premier Boys were confident about their chances of snatching the championship crown from St Peters on Friday 25 August. The grand final was held at North Shore Events Centre, but this didn’t stop the College from marching along and supporting the boys who had already mustered a wonderful season. With a shot at promotion on the line, the boys played a great game with solid determination and heart but this just wasn’t enough to defeat the equally determined St Peters' side. Despite the loss, the Premier Boys have another shot at gaining promotion into the top tier and are looking to replicate this wonderful season against the best in Auckland!

Badminton
On Monday 21 August, the girls’ badminton teams played their last games for this season. Senior Girls defeated ACG 2 by 5-0 and the Junior Girls played against St Dominic 3, winning 4-1.
Football
The 1st XI Girls finished their season in a positive 3rd place finish with a defaulted win against Botany Downs. 2nd XI Boys Lost 1-0 against Pakuranga. Year 10A Boys beat Long Bay with a convincing 5-1 win. Year 9A Boys defeated Howick A 4-1. This was the last match for the Year 9 Boys who finished 9th overall in their competition this season.
Hockey
In their final game of the season the 1st XI Boys Hockey team played Kristin College on Wednesday 23rd August. The boys lost 2-1 in a tightly contested battle, ending the season in 8th place. 1st XI Girls played Epsom Girls in their final match of the season. They managed a comfortable 3-0 win as they rounded off the season in 7th place. The U15 Hockey boys were playing for pride against a fairly evenly matched Saint Kentigern College side for the plate final. Back to full strength, even with a sub, they went into the match confidently and played a cracking first 15 minutes. This was probably their best game tactically and team-wise and was a pleasure to watch. However, at half time we found ourselves two goals down after one of our key

players spent some time on the bench recovering from an accidental stick to the side of the head. A determined team took to the field fired up and played a blinding second half, but missed opportunities were the name of the game and one unfortunate penalty corner later, meant a hard-fought 0-3 loss and a fourth placing overall in the U15A competition. It has been a great season of competition against the top schools at this level and, despite the final result, the boys should be particularly proud of their second placing at the end of the round robins behind Kings College.

Girls Senior Open lost 4-1 against Epsom Girls B SG.
Netball
Premier 2 lost 34-30 against ACG Senior A. Year 10 White played their final game against Henderson High School 10B in the 10E Grade Championship final. It was a very close game throughout. Avondale were down 7-10 at half time, but they played a strong second half to tie the game at 17-17 at the end of match. However, in overtime they couldn't quite get there, sadly going down 17-19. It was an amazing effort from a great bunch of girls who collected their runners-up medals with tear stained faces. Player of the Day was given to the entire team for their great effort in the second part of the season: Ninah Benest (captain), Lauolive Roma, Candice Collins, Nadine Carillo, Cassidy Malone, Serene Forsyth and Chloe Teiti. Year 9 White were contesting for 1st place in the 9C Championship final against WSC Waiorea. In a tightly fought battle, the girls fell painfully short, losing out 26-28. A narrow 2 point defeat rounded off a successful season for the girls who finished in 2nd place overall. Player of the Day was awarded to Jessica Ninnes and Mele Anae. Year 9 Grey played St Dominic 9C in their 3rd vs 4th match. The girls' season came to an end, losing 19-5 and finishing in 4th place. Player of the Day was Riley Watson. Year 9 Black finished their season with a 27-15 win against Henderson High School 9A and finishing in 9th place. Player of the Day was Ruta Rasmussen.
Rugby Union
The 6th Grade Restricted Boys headed to Auckland Grammar for their pool's semi-final. The last time the teams had met, Grammar had won with a penalty in the last minute of the game. There were some new faces in the Grammar team but Avondale were determined to play with HEART and to avenge a painful loss. Over recent games, the team has made massive strides and gained confidence in their style of play. It was 21-12 to Grammar at half-time and the game looked out of reach. The coach demanded a quick early try at the start of the second half and Aidan Lui gleefully obliged within two minutes of the restart. It was now a two-point game as the score see-sawed for the rest of the half. Of particular note was an extraordinary try from Jarq Paul, who literally sidestepped the whole of the Grammar team, player by player from halfway, to score under the posts. Under immense pressure, and with a minute to go, Grammar conceded a penalty, a situation which mirrored our last match. Oliver Carroll stepped up and made no mistake of slotting home the kick, thus giving us a one-point lead. There was still an anxious minute to be eaten up from the restart but we kept the ball, recycled with confidence and got ourselves into a position for Oliver to grubber the ball into touch for the final whistle. Avondale won 29-28 and are through to the grade final against Sacred Heart this Saturday.

It was a very successful day of lifting at the New Zealand Secondary Schools competition which was held on Saturday 2 September in Whangarei. The students, with the exception of Kanah Andrews-Nahu, have been lifting for less than a year. Katie Sou competed in the 69kg division, finishing top of the pile in 1st place. Katelyn Tasker placed 2nd in the 58kg Division and Atonia Vavao finished in 5th place in the 75+kg division. To top off a successful weightlifting competition, we also finished as the Female National Team Champions!

Auckland Police are concerned about the use of synthetic cannabis by members of the public, and the physical and mental harm it is causing many of its users. With this in mind, they have are requested our help in providing the above advice for students in an assembly, and also making available the advice to parents through our school newsletter. Advice on synthetic cannabis for parents Recently there has been media coverage about the danger in using synthetic cannabis and the potentially serious health effects from using these products. Despite the warnings people are still presenting with adverse effects from the use of these products. It is not uncommon for teenagers to experiment with drugs and alcohol, and it would not be uncommon for an unscrupulous drug peddler to potentially sell these products to teenagers. For that reason Auckland City District Police have requested schools in Auckland City recommend to their students that they do not try synthetic cannabis, as the outcomes from its use are highly unpredictable and potentially dangerous. We encourage you to have a discussion with your teenagers about synthetic cannabis (and for that matter all drugs) and let them know that they can talk to you about them. Using the recent media attention given to the issue of synthetic cannabis use is a great way to start a conversation. If they see drug use on TV, be it actual or fictional, ask them what they think about it. Listen to them, and take this opportunity to correct any misinformation they may have about drugs. Make sure that you remain calm during this conversation so that they know that if something comes up, then they can turn to you for help. Police are appealing for information about people supplying synthetic cannabis or other drugs to members of the public. The options you, or your child, can take to report this to Police are: · Call 111 if you see it happening now. · Call in to your local Police station to discuss what you know – you can request that any information you supply remains confidential. · Call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or complete the confidential online form. TAUREWA CAMP 2017 Year 13, Year 12 and Year 10 students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp. We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure. Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to tell their parents early that their camps are coming up this year. TTCF ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIPS Due to the generosity of The Trusts Community Foundation we are able to award the following scholarships to our Year 12 and 13 students who are planning to study at tertiary level in 2018. • 26 x $3000 Degree Scholarships • 13 x $2000 Diploma/Certificate Scholarships can include pre-trade courses • Applicants must have a good academic record and have made a contribution to school and/or the local community • Must be a New Zealand permanent resident The scholarship is to be used towards course fees and students must study in 2018.
Opportunity for students in Year 12 in 2018. Avondale College is fortunate to be able to offer eight Year 12 students the opportunity to sail on board the Spirit of New Zealand in 2018. These 10 day youth development voyages are free to the students, due to grants received from The Trusts Community Foundation. The Spirit of Adventure Trust was formed by Lou Fisher in 1972 to provide the youth of New Zealand access to a 10 day character development programme through sail training. During the course of each voyage, the Trust aims to give young New Zealanders the opportunity to learn and develop from each other qualities of independence, understanding and community spirit through the medium of the sea. The criteria for selection for this life changing opportunity is that the student will benefit from the experience as opposed to an award for academic or other achievements. Students have to be comfortable in deep water and also need to be medically fit. I would encourage all Year 11 students wishing to apply for a berth in 2018 to talk to their Home room Teacher, Dean or see Mrs Johnson in the Careers Department to register their interest by the end of term 3. If students do not received one of the free berths from Avondale College they can apply direct to The Spirit of Adventure Trust for one of the public berths. The Spirit Trust can offer different levels of financial assistance for these voyages based on family circumstances. 8

ROTARY AWARDS 2018 The Bill Rodwell Rotary Award is to assist senior students to further their education at Avondale College. It is made to Year 11 or Year 12 students who have been fully involved in school activities, who have done well academically and intend to return to school for one or two years of further study. Family financial circumstances are taken into consideration. This year, three awards of $200 will be awarded. Application forms can be obtained from the main office or the Careers Department and should be handed in to Mr Goold when completed by Friday 22 September.
