B KBB AWARDS One hundred and nineteen Avondale College students in four different groups performed at last week's KBB Music Festival held at the Auckland Cathedral and St Mary's Cathedral Church. On Monday, the Taikaka Orchestra performed in the fringe festival in the Cathedral. This development orchestra showcased 32 junior students and is the heart of our future premiere groups. They performed under the direction of Mr Thompson and had a workshop in the cathedral with adjudicator Michael Joel. On Tuesday morning 46 players from the Symphony Orchestra travelled to the Cathedral to perform their competitive set led by Mr Stenbo. They produced a rich sound and showcased solos from Emily Kamimura on violin and Jeffery Guo on piano. Then on Tuesday evening the String Ensemble met at St Mary's Cathedral Church for their performance, wowing the audience with their passionate playing. Their set concluded with a performance of Barrage's Seven Wicked Reels, culminating in playing with their violins on their heads! On Thursday night the Big Band played with Mr Robinson and once again showed outstanding jazz style across a range of jazz music. On Saturday morning we learned that the Festival Committee had decided to award our String Ensemble the Chairman's Command Performance Award, which included a performance at the gala concert that afternoon. They met at the Cathedral at 2pm and performed their Irish Reels to a full house.

Another two Avondale College entries have made it through to the finals of the Stand Up Stand Out competition, making it a total of four finalists from our school to be competing in the Grand Final at the Vodafone Events Centre on the afternoon of Saturday 2 September! Congratulations to our Senior Contemporary dance group whose outstanding performance in the last week's heats has seen them progress straight through to the finals. Solo vocalist Tinei Tagaloa-Leniu has also made it through, with her operatic version of The Lord's Prayer. This is a real testament to the power and passion of her developing operatic voice, especially as no other non-soul singer in memory has made it through the SUSO final. They will be joining drummer Joshua Parker and vocal group The Uzo's at the grand final. Mark it in your diary, and come and support Avondale College on 2 September from 1pm at the Vodafone Events Centre. Entry $5

SNOW TEAM The 2017 winter season kicked off in week 4 with the Snowteam's first session on the (artificial) snow at Snowplanet. Students were pushing themselves to attempt new tricks, sharpen up their turns and develop new skills in both skiing and snowboarding. It was great to see lots of new faces in the team, with fresh talent from both juniors, seniors and our international students. The aim is to continue to improve our race and freestyle skills in preparation for this year's National Secondary Schools competitions happening at the end of Term 3 on the slopes of Turoa, Mt Ruapehu. If you missed our Snowplanet trip but would like to be considered for the team, please speak to Mr Wheater or Mr Hill.

HIP HOP INTERNATIONAL WORLD CHAMPS Two Avondale College students, Jordan Bolus (Year 13) and Brianna Hamilton (Year 12) have just returned from Phoenix, Arizona after competing in the Hip Hop International World Championships in the mega crew division. Year 13 student Jordan Bolus's mega crew, Yung ID from Identity Dance Company, finished 3rd in the New Zealand Nationals in April, behind the adult mega crew from Identity DC and Royal Family. All three groups travelled to Phoenix to compete as part of the 60 strong mega crew division. Over 50 countries were represented and over 4,300 dancers were on site at the World Championships to compete in all the different categories available. After progressing through from the pre-lims to the semi-finals, Jordan's Yung ID crew finished 12th in the world. This was a phenomenal achievement for Yung ID, who are made up of dancers aged from 12-18 years. The top eight went on to compete in the finals, where the adult crew from Identity DC finished 4th overall. Brianna also did extremely well in the international competition, coming 15th in the world with her Varsity - Royal Family Megacrew.

SPORTS REPORT Week 4- Sports Report 14 – 20 August

Basketball

Our Basketball Premier Boys had a massive win against Liston College in the semi-final play-off game on Friday 18 August. After having previously lost out to Liston College twice this season, the Premier Boys were pumped for revenge and, more importantly, a chance to book a spot in the play-off finals. The boys played with determination through a nail-biting contest, showing great passion and pride as they pulled away with a 10 point victory in the end, defeating Liston College 97-87. The Premier Boys are into the championship final against St Peters College and in doing so, have also secured a chance to qualify for the Premier Boys Basketball division for next season!

Hockey

1st XI Boys lost 10-0 against St Kentigern 1st XI Boys. 1st XI Girls played Westlake Girls on Thursday 17 August away at Diocesan. The girls narrowly lost out 3-2 in a tightly contested match. Our U15 Boys side played Mt Albert A in their championship semifinal match on Monday 14 August. It has been a long season and the boys showed great tenacity, but were outfought by a strong Mt Albert Grammar side. The U15 Boys failed to book a final spot, eventually losing out 5-0 on the day.

Badminton

The Senior Boys rounded off their badminton season in style, defeating Rutherford College 5-0 in their last game of the season. Junior boys lost 4-1 against Liston College to end their season. Senior Girls lost 4-1 against ACG 1. Junior Girls won 4-1 vs ACG 3.

Football

U15 Boys vs Mt Albert A in their championship semi-final match

Netball

1st XI Boys vs Rosmini in their final home game Congratulations to the Football 1st XI Boys who are now the A1 Football champions after beating Rosmini 3-2 on Saturday 19 August! This was a stern test for the boys as they knew a win would guarantee silverware on the day. There were a few nervous moments throughout the first period; however, the boys showed great character and pulled through, winning 3-2 in the end. The 1st XI Boys have now secured a spot in the Premier Football Division for next season whilst still having a game in hand! It has been a remarkable season, with the boys being rewarded with the title and a chance to compete with Auckland’s best next season. 2nd XI Boys lost narrowly against St Peters Gold. Final score 1-0. 3rd XI Boys played their last game of the season against Green Bay 2nd XI. Closing the season on a high with a comfortable 4-2 win, the 3rd XI Boys have finished in 4th place. The 1st XI Girls had a shot at the championship on Wednesday 16th August as they took on Mt Roskill in their semi-final match. The girls fell short in the end, losing out 3-1, however the girls will be competing in the 3rd vs 4th play-off match to draw a close to a positive season. Year 10A Boys won 2-0 against Selwyn College A.

6

Year 10 White defeated GBHS 10C in the Year 10 Grade D Championship semi-final to advance into the Championship final. The Year 10 girls fought strongly till the final whistle, recording a 28-24 win. Player of the Day was awarded to Candice Collins (GS) for backing up with rebounds throughout the match. Year 10 Black played St Doms 10B to round off their season. Unfortunately they lost 22-8 and finished the season in 6th place. Player of the Day was Coco Lovatt (C,WD) for her consistency and never-give-up attitude. Year 9 Grey lost 26-9 against ACG Sunderland. Year 9 Black lost their last game of the season against GBHS 9A 23-20, finishing the season in 7th place. Year 9 White won their Championship semi-final match against Waitakere 9 Blue by two points in double extra time. Final score was 24-22.

Rugby Union

The 1st XV Boys faced Otahuhu College in the 1B Plate Semi-final on Saturday 19 August away at Otahuhu College. Otahuhu started the match with much physicality and Avondale responded by defending strongly throughout the first half. At half time the score was 5-0 to Otahuhu with little to separate the two sides. The second half saw Otahuhu run in an early try under the posts with a conversion to follow. Avondale responded with a great individual try by Billy Faraimo. Unfortunately, a member of the opposing side suffered a broken leg which saw the game abandoned. The first XV side showed great character and sportsmanship during the incident. The final score remained at 17-5 to Otahuhu College which meant that the season had come to an end for the 1st XV Boys side.

B

6th Grade Restricted Boys side played Sacred Heart 6B on Saturday 19 August. The Restricted boys were feeling confident heading into the match on the back of a win against St Kentigern. The boys knew it was going to be a battle after already beating Sacred Heart once this season, as they would be coming out strongly, looking for revenge. As always, our backline was dangerous on attack while our forwards provided plenty of clean ball for Joshua Duffin to provide to first five and captain, Oliver Carroll. The latter cut swatches through the opposition's defence at every opportunity. The team secured a second victory in as many weeks, with five tries being run in and a brace each to Tremayne Redman-Gardner and Matthew Phongsai. In the end the Restricted Boys won 36-25. The U14B boys had a quarter-final match against a Tangaroa College side who have been unbeaten all season. With a difficult first half, the boys came out into the 2nd half firing, and they came back from being

10-3 down to eventually locking the scores at 10 all. The game ended 10-10 and due to IRB laws, no overtime can be played by schoolboys. Tangaroa therefore advance in the competition due to scoring 2 tries to 1. The individual and team development has been substantial, highlighted by the display of HEART values throughout the season.

Squash

Premier Boys Open played St Peters College in the Premier Reserves Cup Final on Friday 18 August. It was a close encounter with some great display of skill and precision. Unfortunately, the boys fell short by one in the end, losing 9-8.

Underwater Hockey

On Tuesday 15 August, the Underwater Hockey Senior Open side lost 3-1 to Mt Albert Grammar SO, followed by a 5-0 defeat to Glendowie SO later that night.
