B MOS WORLD CHAMPS
FOUR TOP TEN PLACES! Beating more than 670,000 contestants worldwide, four of the Avondale College/New Zealand team placed in the top ten of their categories at the Microsoft Office Specialist World Championships held in the USA last week, with Jayden Cooke bringing home a bronze medal! This is another extraordinary result for Avondale College! The world’s largest global ICT competition is open to secondary and tertiary students aged from 13 to 22 and this year grew to attract 1.1 million entries from 670,000 individuals in 122 countries. Avondale College fielded the entire Australasian team at the international final, joining 200 finalists from 50 countries. Competition was fierce as contestants raced against the clock to create unique project-based assignments in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Jayden, an Avondale College graduate and current Innovation Programme intern won third place in the world – and a prize of USD$1,500 for his efforts in the Excel (2016) category. This makes it the second bronze medal he has won at international level, following his previous success in MS Word (2010) in 2014. Three of Jayden’s teammates also achieved top-ten in the world results: Shrey Tailor (Year 12) - fifth in Microsoft Excel 2013, Sebastian Thomas (Year 11) - eighth in Microsoft PowerPoint 2013, and Ed Allison (Year 10) - eighth place in Microsoft PowerPoint 2016. It’s an extraordinary tally for Avondale College, with this year’s success making it twelve world top-ten results, including three medals, since our students began taking part four years ago. “The Microsoft Office Specialist World Championship is inspiring – not only because these students won an impressive award, but because they have gained valuable workforce skills that will benefit them throughout their academic and career pursuits,” said Aaron Osmond, General Manager of certification provider and competition organiser, Certiport. “The best part is watching the champions go home and then reporting back to us with all of the amazing things they are doing academically and in the workforce.”

SENIOR EXAMS Friday 18 August - Friday 25 August During this time all of our senior students, with the exception of those in Learning Support (Class 2) and the Transition classes, will be granted study leave to prepare for their examinations. Please note, that due to internal assessment components, not all subjects are examined during this upcoming week. It is compulsory for students to attend their exams as per the examination timetable on page 8. Junior students attend classes as normal.
ROTORUA GEOGRAPHY TRIP Our annual Level 3 Geography field trip to Rotorua is always a highlight of the Geography calendar, and last week's trip was one of the best ever! For three days, our young geographers experienced firsthand what Rotorua tourism is all about. The luge rides, the bungy jumps, the swoop and the sweep were some of the activities we experienced as we visited different types of cultural and natural attractions. Highlights also included the tour of Te Puia at Whakarewarewa and adventure tourism at the Skyline and Agroventures. It was an awesome experience for all students involved, and especially for our new international students! Avondale HEART values were in evidence every step of the way, which which made it very enjoyable for everyone. Many thanks to all the teachers who made this trip possible.

BRIDGE BUILDERS WIN DIGITAL AWARD Avondale's bridge building team of Tommy Ong, Arc Porcioncula and Rohan Sharma, won the prize for the best digital design of all the 32 teams who entered the Auckland-wide Aurecon Bridge Building Competition! They will receive a 3D printed model of their design. Avondale entered two teams in the competition, with our team of Christopher Tang, Roshni Oberoi and Xin Yan Liu doing well in the 'strength' category. Tested to breaking point, their bridge held a weight of over 20kg and placed 14th overall. The strongest bridge on the day managed 80kg, so there is incentive for our budding mathematicians to continue planning their challenge for next year!
Hundreds of families toured Avondale College at our Open Evening on Wednesday night, seeing our fantastic staff and students in action across each department. Enrolment week continues this week! (See page 3 for enrolment times.)
JAZZ COMBO
On Sunday our premier jazz combo performed at the School Jazz Band Competition at the Pt. Chevalier RSA. This is the largest school jazz combo competition currently in New Zealand, and one at which our students have experienced great success in the past. Featuring Cullen Erson on bass, Jack Stoneman on piano, Joshua Parker on guitar, Aimee Liang on alto sax, Shirley Chen on tenor sax and Luca Wedding-Pritchard on baritone sax, the combo performed a number of jazz standards, including Nica's Dream, Bernie's Tune, No Greater Love, My Funny Valentine and Straight No Chaser. This was the final combo competition for Year 13 students Cullen and Jack, and a great note for them to finish on! Judges' feedback and any awards from the two weeks of competition will be announced next week.

SPORTS REPORT Week 2 Sports Report 31 July to 6 August
Basketball
The Premier Boys’ side defeated Manurewa High School 88-41 on Friday 4 August. However, the Premier Girls fell short, losing 74-41 against Orewa.

On Wednesday 2 August the U15 Boys A side lost 45-10 to Mt Albert Grammar A at the Trusts Stadium. Our Under 15 girls saved the best for last. They finally put in a performance that did justice to the amount of effort they have put into training. Their performance was a clinic of crisp passing, controlled dribbling, precise finishing and polished teamwork. Their management team could not have been prouder if they had won the league! The final score was 69- 13. Top scorer was Maraea Whiu; however, all the girls contributed, with Mercy Lemisio guiding the team from the point guard position. Bronwyn, Daphne, Bella and Siggy were outstanding, while Helene and Danielle showed that they too can compete at a high standard. U17B Boys lost 35-43 against St Pauls. U17A Boys defeated Western Springs A 49-43. U17 Girls lost narrowly against Mt Albert B, 44-42.
Football
On Tuesday 1 August the Year 9A Boys played against Westlake Boys in the quarter-final match of the Knock-out Cup. The game was played away at Westlake Boys and unfortunately the Year 9A boys were knocked out of the competition, losing 3-0. Our 1st XI Boys were victorious against Glendowie on Saturday 5th August, which sees our boys at the top of the table with only three more games remaining. The 2nd XI Boys took an early advantage, leading 2-0 against Edgewater College. But the second half saw Edgewater come back and win the game 6-2 after outpacing our boys in the end. The 3rd XI Boys won 6-3 against Lynfield College. Year 10A Boys defeated Mt Roskill Grammar 3-0. Year 9A Boys lost 6-0 against Sacred Heart. Year 9B Boys lost 12-1 against Kings College A, playing with only eight players.
Hockey
We saw 100% commitment from the Premier Boys 1st XI Hockey side, and they only trailed 1-0 at half time. Defending penalty corners seemed to be the downfall for the boys, as Westlake scored on three occasions. Despite a good effort from our boys, the final result was 5-1. The Premier 1st XI Girls lost 3-2 against Mahurangi. It was a close game from the get go and could have gone either way. We had many chances at goal, with a number of young Year 9 players focussing on their sweep and push passes to get past the defence. The U15 boys played a strong St Kentigern College team. Some determined attacking against their scrambling defense led to two great goals from Shivang Patel and Liam Law-Talea to even the score at 2-2. With their confidence restored, and hearts pumping, the boys continued to fight for the win but one penalty corner and a later field goal, saw St Kents go to 4-2 mid-way through the half. The boys never gave up, showing great fight and tenacity to gain a further goal by Shivang Patel, with lots of work done by Shoma Hirota, Shravan Patel

Girls Black B lost by one point against Mt Albert B, going down 7-6 on Thursday 3rd August. Girls White C finished the season in 11th place.
Netball
Wednesday 2 August saw the Premier Girls, Year 10 girls and Year 9 girls compete in the one day Combined Points Netball Tournament held at the AMI Stadium in St Johns. The Year 9 Girls lost their first two matches before beating Botany Downs 14-11 in their third match of the day. However, further losses to St Kentigern (19-2) and Whangarei Girls (25-10) ended the tournament early for the girls. The Year 10s also had a tough tournament, losing all four matches against Auckland Girls (9-18), St Cuthberts (8-11), Mt Albert Grammar (0-28) and St Peters Cambridge (4-15). On Saturday 5th August, the Year 10 Black side lost by one point in a gripping game against Rutherford Gold 10. The girls lost in the last minute of the game via a penalty goal. Player of the Day was Chelsea Talataina (GD) for some awesome interceptions throughout the game. Year 10 White lost to Henderson 10B whilst Year 9 Grey defeated Lynfield 9 Green 10-8. Player of the Day was awarded to Riley Watson. Also on Saturday 5 August, the Year 9 Black side played two matches, losing both on the day. A 35-23 loss against Waitakere 9A was followed by a 46-9 loss to St Doms 9A. Player of the Day for the first game went to Leighton. Year 9 Whites won by default.

Rugby League
The U15 boys won 22-18 against Southern Cross on Wednesday 2 August at home and have now progressed into the Grand Final of Division 1 against Southern Cross (again!) to be held at Ellerslie Rugby League Club on Wednesday 9 August.
Rugby Union
Saturday 5 August brought perfect conditions for the 1st XV game against Edgewater College. Both teams started with strong defence, which resulted in a scoreless first half. The second half opened up the running play and Edgewater was first to score a try. Tevita Kalu managed to get under a high ball and score Avondale’s first try which was then converted by Jack Borham. Using the wind and punching the corner with some good tactical kicking from Dylan Finau, Zac Mauga scored Avondale’s second try. A late penalty saw Jack Borham score the final three points of the match. A much needed turnaround from last week’s match saw the boys play together as a team, with all giving 100%. The final score was 15–5 to Avondale. Players of the Day were Dylan Wood and Jacob Tuala-Dawson. The 2nd XI Boys defeated One Tree Hill 2B 19-3. The Restricted Boys lost 22-19 against Auckland Grammar C. Avondale U15 Rugby got their third consecutive win against Auckland Grammar on Tuesday 1 August. After leading 17-0, Grammar fought back, resulting in a half time score of 17-10. After some stern advice from the coaches, Avondale blitzed the second half, putting on five tries to finish 39-10. Game highlights included two amazing individual tries to Tafia Tofa and David Saia literally piggy backing a Grammar defender 10m down the field. TJ Mauga was awarded Player of the Day for his lineout steals, strong ball carrying and leadership of the forwards around the field. The U15 Rugby Boys played their second match of the week on Saturday 5 August, recording their 4th straight win and looking to finish the season on a high. A strong defensive performance had the team winning 33-14 against a large Mangere College side. Excellent ball retention at the breakdown provided the backs with plenty of ball. Tyler Loomes made a big impact off the bench and TJ Mauga notched up consecutive Player of the Day awards, as well as a try. Other try scorers included captain Riku Hayashi, Corey Wood and Inoke Kupu who kicked 3 out of 4 conversion attempts. A top of the table clash pitted our Under 14 team against a strong Liston College team. Missing some key players to injuries and illness, the team started out slowly but were able to get into the half time break even at 12-12 with tries to Isimasi Tavae and Casey Wills. After a tight second half Liston were ahead 22-17 with a well-finished try
from Ola Hoeft. The team were hot on attack with a chance to win the game but were tackled into touch on the last play. There were many lessons to learn from the close loss that the team can improve upon for the upcoming playoff games.
Squash
The Open Girls A played on Monday 31 July against Mt Albert B1, winning 4-0 and the Senior Open B Boys also grabbed a win against Rutherford 2 later that week on Wednesday 2 August, coming out on top with a 3-1 score line.
Underwater Hockey
On Tuesday 1 August, the Senior Open Underwater Hockey side defeated Howick SO 2-1 at Manurewa Aquatics Centre. However, the following game saw the Senior Open side fall short against Glendowie, 7-1.
INDIVDUAL STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS HOCKEY
Congratulations to Alex Stenberg (Year 10) who made the boys U15A Auckland Hockey team, and to Tilo Seltner-Jones (Year 12) who made the U18A team and Oliver Cornelius (Year 13) the U18B team! Alex Stenberg and Liam Law-Telea have both been selected for the U15 A tournament in the September holidays, and Jappreet Kullar has been selected for the Thames Valley U18 B tournament after trialling at North Harbour!
ORIENTEERING
Liam Stolberger and Ryan Moore's performance at the NZSS Orienteering Championships (featured in Heartbeat Week 1) has led to Avondale College winning the 'Premier Boys School Award'. Supported by SILVA, with boys and girls trophies, the award is aimed at encouraging schools to support their top performing competitors at national level. The winners are the schools that have the best performance by their top competitors at championship level only. The results of one competitor from each school in each age grade count, with points from 10 for 1st, to 1 for 10th.
TAUREWA CAMP 2017 Year 13, Year 12 and Year 10 students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp. We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure. Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to tell their parents early that their camps are coming up this year.
