Avondale College is holding our annual Open Evening from 4.00pm to 7.00pm on Wednesday 2 August. This is when parents of prospective students are invited to view our school.

Timetabled classes will finish at 12.30pm, to allow preparations for the evening.

At this time your child will be released from class to go home. Buses have been rescheduled and will run at this earlier time. After school detentions will run from 12.35pm.

There will be supervision available in the library for students whose parents are unable to accommodate this earlier finishing time.

There are a number of students involved in Open Evening activities and their support of Avondale College is much appreciated.

MEDALS FOR NZ TEAM AT IBO Bianca Craill has won a bronze medal at the 2017 International Biology Olympiad!

After an intense programme of testing, the four member New Zealand team has proven themselves to rank amongst the very top Biology students in the world, with three gaining bronze medals, and one a gold.

Held at the University of Warwick, 260 students from 67 countries participated in the international competition.

Fees received after 1 December will incur a $50 late charge, payable directly to NZQA. Paying your fees will enable your results to be recorded on your Record of Achievement and to receive any certificates.

NZ Scholarship Exam - Entries due 1st August

Our seven New Zealand reps have completed the competition phase at the Microsoft and Adobe world champs being held in the USA this week and are now anxiously awaiting the results!

With hundreds of top students from all over the world competing in the international event, the atmosphere has been tense, and competition fierce! Rita Zhong (Year 11) who is representing Avondale (and Australasia) in Adobe Photoshop had a gruelling eight hours of project-based competition!

With the competition phase now over, the team are now enjoying some well-deserved R&R before the results are announced.

New Zealand Scholarship is New Zealand's most prestigious secondary school academic qualification.

It provides recognition and monetary reward to top students in their last year of schooling. New Zealand Scholarship assessments enable candidates to be assessed against challenging standards, and are demanding for the most able candidates in each subject. Assessment is by either a written/spoken examination or by the submission of a portfolio or report of work produced throughout the year.

Scholarship candidates are expected to demonstrate high-level critical thinking, abstraction and generalisation, and to integrate, synthesise and apply knowledge, skills, understanding and ideas to complex situations.

Entries for New Zealand Scholarship close on Tuesday 1 August, and payment is due by 18 August.

Students intending to enter must return their forms to the main office before next Tuesday.

JAZZ COMBO

FAMILY CONNECTION

Our award-winning jazz students have been making their mark again this week, with performances at the Schools Jazz Competition being held at the Point Chevalier RSA. Our Junior and Intermediate Jazz combos entertained the audience (and judges!), performing 35 minute sets.

Coming up this Sunday at 10.45am is our premier Jazz Combo - so make sure you head down to the RSA for a great morning of topquality jazz!

SPORTS REPORT Rugby Union

Week 1- Sports Report 24th July – 30th July

Basketball

The Premier Boys won convincingly 102-73 against Northcote.

The game featured fantastic defence from Kennedy Nikolaison and brilliant attacking play from Jaga Mete.

Football

On Friday 28 July the 1st XI Boys defeated Rutherford College in a 3-0 win away at Starling Park which sees them move to the top of the table in the A1 competition. The 2nd XI Boys also picked up a win against Rosmini College on Saturday 29 July. The first goal was scored by Jack, followed by a second goal by Luke. The boys went on to win the match 2-1. The 3rd XI Boys managed to grab a win, beating Mount Albert 3-1. The Year 9A Boys suffered a 3-0 defeat to Mount Albert Grammar.

Hockey

On Thursday 27 July, the 1st XI Hockey Girls lost 7-0 against St Mary’s. Player of the Day went to Keeley Stoehr. The girls held St Mary’s to a 1-0 lead at half time and were playing with much field structure and moving the ball around the turf, but their aggressive power did not hold up in the second half defensively, allowing St Mary’s some easy shots at goal.

Lacrosse

The Lacrosse Premier Girls drew 7-7 against Mt Roskill Grammar on Tuesday 25 July. Later in the week they played a second game on Thursday 27 against Epsom Girls, which they lost 14-4.

Netball

Senior Netball Tuesday 25 July:

Senior Girls Black drew 24-all against Hoani Kahu. It was a tough game, with both teams evenly matched. The girls kept their spirits up throughout the game and showed great tenacity, making the most of every opportunity.

It was fantastic weather at Waitakere College for the 1st XV's first match of Term 3 on Saturday 29 July. After a break of three weeks, the team struggled to get their combinations working. Half time saw the first XV Boys still in the match thanks to a try by Zac Mauga and a conversion by Jacob Anitelea. An individual piece of brilliance by Billy Faraimo saw him run in a try in the second half.

Unfortunately, Waitakere College was the better side on the day and came away with the win 32-12.

It also proved to be a tough day at the office for the 2nd XV Boys as they went down 72-0 against a rampant Auckland Grammar side.

Avondale’s Restricted Boys lost narrowly against Te Kauwhata, 20-25.

The U15 Rugby team had their second win in a row against a tough Marcellin College side. Despite trailing 12-8 at halftime, Avondale put in a huge defensive effort to win the game 25-17. On the back of some strong running from forwards Liam Tamaseu and Oshinn Pese, the backs moved the ball extremely well in muddy conditions. This resulted in tries to Tyler Loomes (x2), Tafia Tofa and Samson Mafileo, who had a superb game.

In the first game after the holiday break the Under 14 Rugby team was looking to cement their position in the upcoming playoffs against a strong Waitakere College team. A dominant first half performance resulted in a 12-0 half time lead after tries from Steve Setefano and Isimasi Tavae. The team continued to dominate set pieces in the second half, highlighted by strong line-out performances by Bradley Tinielu and Hayden Warrington. Tries from Casey Wills and Nathaniel Roma sealed a well-deserved 22-7 victory.

Underwater Hockey

On Tuesday 25th July, the senior Open underwater hockey side lost both their games in Mt Albert against Howick College and later to Mt Albert Grammar.

Junior Netball Saturday 29th July:

Year 10 Black lost 16-21 to ACG. Faith Faumui (GA) was awarded Player of the Day for her consistency.

Year 10 White lost 10-16 against GBHS. The Player of the Day was awarded to Lauolive Roma (GD/GD) for feisty play and maintaining her focus for all four quarters, but she handed over her award to her defence partner, Nadine Carillo (GD/GK), whom she felt had had to deal with a particularly difficult opponent. (Atawhai in action!)

Year 9 Black won 19-16 against Massey. Player of the Day was awarded to Bella Rasmussen.

Year 9 White went down 22-16 vs Waitakere College. Christine Maagdenberg was the Player of the Day. Year 9 Grey lost 13-3 vs GBHS. Player of the Day was awarded to Janet Ung.

Rugby League

On Wednesday 26 July the U15 Boys defeated St Pauls 20-18 at Avondale College. The boys edged out winners in the end by two points and are still sitting in the top four of the Championship round.

INDIVDUAL STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS Silver medal for Joanna at NZ Cross Country Champs Congratulations to Joanna Poland (Year 9), who has won a silver medal at the New Zealand Cross Country championships held at the Domain in the weekend! Running for her Oratia Club, Joanna showed tremendous tenacity over the 3km course, beating girls older than her in the U15 race. Well done, Joanna!

KANAH ANDREWS-NAHU – Year 12 Kanah competes in the sport of weightlifting where, in 2016, she represented New Zealand in Malaysia, competing in the 69kg plus category in the IWF Youth World Championships.

She finished that event ranked 21st in the world. In Thailand at the same championships she finished 11th, breaking four New Zealand records in the process.

Fast forwarding to 2017, Kanah has picked up her training to average two hours a day during the week straight after school and has been competing in regular local weight lifting competitions at Patterson’s Functional Strength gym on the North Shore. Kanah entered a talent identification programme held at the Oceania Olympic Weightlifting Institute in New Caledonia and after training for a week she placed 3rd at the Pacific Cup Tournament. Her next competition will be in September 2017 to compete at the Commonwealth and Oceania Championships. In New Zealand she is ranked 1st in the Youth 75kg plus category and the Junior U90kg category, as well being ranked 2nd in the Seniors in the U90kg class.

BELLA GILMORE - Year 10 Bella represented the Auckland Waitakere Club at the New Zealand Artistic Roller Skating Championships over the holidays in Rotorua, where she won Gold in the Intermediate Creative Solo Dance. This is a routine completed twice, making sure footwork and placement on the floor is the same each time. She also won Silver in the Mini Precision Category, which is an event for a team of eight who perform manoeuvers much like marching teams and are awarded points on technical merit and artistic impression.

Joanna Poland at the NZ Cross Country Champs last weekend NINA TOLLEMACHE – Year 13 As a member of the NZ U23 Lacrosse side, Nina competed in the U23 World Lacrosse Championships in South Korea over the holidays, beating South Korea in the 3rd and 4th play off and bringing home bronze.

RENEE FOWLER (Year 10) & RUBY COOMBES (Year 13) Renee was selected for the U15A Auckland Hockey squad and Ruby was selected for the U18A Auckland Hockey Squad who are now training for their Inter-provincial championships happening later this year.

TAUREWA CAMP 2017 Year 13, Year 12 and Year 10 students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp.

We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure. Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to tell their parents early that their camps are coming up this year.
