B MUSICIANS HEAD TO BRISBANE FESTIVAL Avondale College's theatre was the venue of a fantastic concert on Sunday afternoon which featured performances from the Taikaka Orchestra, Avondale College Orchestra, String Ensemble, Big Band, Performing Arts Academy Classical students and more. The concert also gave the musicians in our Orchestra, String Ensemble and Big Band the opportunity for one final performance run through before they head to Brisbane this week for the international Aspire Music Festival. The groups have been working very hard in the lead up to this event, and are looking forward to being part of the international festival. We wish them well!

PERFORMING ARTS ACADEMY EVENING Students involved in our Performing Arts Academy strands of Dance, Drama, Classical and Jazz music gave a wonderful demonstration of pieces that they have been working on in their classes at the showcase evening held in the theatre on Wednesday evening. The Year 9 and 10 Drama classes combined to present their quirky adaptation of Dr Seuss's classic, The Cat in the Hat. Dancers showcased the work they are doing in the lead up to their Contemporary and Hip Hop exams next term. Classical music students performed three pieces: Theme from Pastorale (Christmas Concerto) by Corelli, Our Heritage by Schumann and We Join in Song by Beethoven. The Jazz Academy students performed Moondance by Van Morrison, Chitlins Con Carne by Kenny Burrell and Herbie Hancock's Watermelon Man. It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening, and we look forward to seeing more from these talented performers at their showcase at the end of the year.

STAGE CHALLENGE Months of creativity, hard work, planning and rehearsals are about to come to fruition this week as the student-led Stage Challenge cast get set to take to the stage on Thursday evening to compete in the RAW division (no set, just cast and props) of the SMOKEFREE Stage Challenge in the Aotea Centre. Led by Year 13 senior dance students Danielle Twentyman and Lauren Catley, this year the group have taken the story of Aladdin and his magic lamp to make a commentary on modern society's fascination with the universal and sometimes destructive themes of love, wealth and power. Teacher in charge of Stage Challenge, Ms Medland, says the group have been working hard to pull all elements of their performance together. "The whole cast and crew have been rehearsing weekly over the last 3-4 months to design a concept and create the story, learn the choreography, make all the props and the costumes and bring together a powerful and very relevant performance. I'm grateful to Mr Smith, to our lovely, dedicated Stage Challenge student leaders and their team of senior student helpers and to the whole cast and crew for the dedication they have shown to prepare this performance for the competition. Bring on the show!"

SPORTS REPORT Week 9: 26 June - 2 July
On Saturday 1 July the 1st XI Boys lost 4-2 to King’s College’s 1st XI. Unfortunately, the 2nd XI Boys suffered their second defeat for the season, falling short in a very strong and competitive game against Kings’ 2nd XI, losing 1-0.
Badminton
Junior Boys vs Rutherford College won 5-0. Senior Girls vs ACG won 4-1. Junior Girls vs St Dominic’s lost 3-2.
The 3rd XI Boys lost to Rutherford College 4-0. The Year 10 A Boys lost 2-0 to Liston College.
Basketball
On Friday 30 June the Premier boys showed plenty of HEART values in a very tough game against St Peter’s College. Unfortunately, the final result was a one point loss, 93-92, to St Peter’s. The Premier Girls went down 69-53 to Orewa College on Friday 26 June. The girls then played Auckland Girls Grammar on Friday 30 June and suffered a 124-6 loss. The Under 15 A Boys went down 40-13 to Mt Albert Grammar School on Wednesday 28 June.
The Year 9 A Boys lost 1-0 to Auckland Boys’ Grammar. Good contributions were made by Captain Ben Hall, goalkeeper Aiden Wachter and a great first game was had by Mesbah M Essa Ah.
Hockey
The 1st XI Boys played Saint Kentigern College on Wednesday 28 June. We were down 5-0 at half time, however the boys played extremely well, with some great build up on attacks. The final score was 9-1 to Saint Kentigern College.
It was a tough game for the U17B team this week, who went down to a strong St Paul’s side 36-22. Standout players were Francis Intic (who under pressure is always able to keep a cool head and run the floor), and Diaz McArthur (who brings a lot of experience and leadership to the side). Special mention to our Assistant Coach this season, Tauhir Toyer, for lending his knowledge and experience to the team and for helping out at every game he attended. On Thursday 29 June the Under 15 Girls suffered a 31-16 loss to Onehunga High School and the Under 17 Girls lost 48-37 against Auckland Girls.
Football
On Wednesday 28 June the 1st XI Girls narrowly lost 2-1 against Macleans College and the Junior Girls suffered a 4-1 loss against Rangitoto College.
The Under 15 Boys played St Peter’s College on Monday 26 June. Right from the start our forwards exploded with a goal in the first minute of the game from Shivang Patel, leaving the opposition spectators stunned. Ten minutes later Lex Revell-Lewis was handy in the circle, feeding Liam Law-Telea with a lovely push. Liam then took our second goal with a strong hit from the edge of the circle. Our boys relished the action as they were able to play a more freeflowing game, maintaining most of the possession with a 2-0 lead. We were reminded to never rest on our laurels when St Peter’s scored against the run of play, catching our defenders too far up, making it 2-1. Shoma Hirota was busy in mid-field and combining with Shivang Patel, deflected a lightning pass at knee height into the goal for a 3-1 lead at half time. Continuing the pressure after a confident team-talk, we were soon up 4-1 with a strong and determined hit off the pads that put Hersh Patel off balance, rolling like a gymnast on the turf and back to his feet; his powerful hit smashing the backboard. Shivang Patel had the game of his life with two more beautifully executed goals, one taken in a delicate pirouette to confuse the defenders, the other with exceptional control and a simple push. The game ended with a 6-1 win, taking us as 2nd place-holders into the top four playoffs. In fine company, we look forward to upcoming battles with Kings, Saint Kentigern and Mt Albert Grammar School for the title of Auckland U15 Boys Champions.

On Thursday 29 June, the Lacrosse B team lost 13-5 to Pinehurst College and the Lacrosse C team lost 15-2 against Glendowie College.

Rugby League
On Wednesday 28 June the 1st XIII went down 42-14 to Westlake Boys. The boys showed great HEART values and are improving every week as a team. The Under 15 Boys had a convincing 44-12 win over Aorere College.
Rugby Union
The start of the next round of pool games was a fruitful one for the 1st XV. A home game against Mangere College brought a good supporter turnout and they weren’t disappointed. Unlike the match the previous week, our school field could withstand the wet weather conditions and this resulted in good running rugby from the team. Two missed penalties from Avondale saw Mangere College up 5-0 at halftime. A rousing speech from the coaches saw the boys lift their heads and go into the second half with a different attitude and plenty of HEART. A try from Jacob Anitelea and conversion from Jack Borham lifted the energy levels and put us in front 7-5. Towards the end of the second half Avondale got a penalty close to the posts and rather than take the points they took the risk and went for the try. The risk paid off with Jacob Tuala-Dawson crossing for our second try. The final score was 12-5 to Avondale. Players of the Day were Jack Borham and Zac Mauga. The 2nd XV lost 21-0 to Botany Downs College on Saturday 1 July. The 6th grade team suffered an 80-5 loss to St Peter’s College. Oliver Harrison was again awarded man of the match. The Under 15 Boys had their first win of the season against Kelston Boy's High School. In difficult conditions, Avondale kept their discipline and kicked two penalty goals in the first half to go up 6-0. Barely touching the ball in the second half, the boys defended the line with tenacity and repelled Kelston multiple times. Tyler Loomes was unlucky not to score under the posts in the final minutes but the boys held strong and won 6-0. Player of the Day was shared by the team as their defensive effort was the best performance of the season. The Under 14 Boys matched up against the undefeated One Tree Hill College. An early try from Nathaniel Roma was quickly followed by Steve Setefano crashing over from close range. Mark Tuvao also crossed over, resulting in a well-earned 19-0 half time lead. Casey Wills scored a great try early in the second half, set up well by debutant Lech Ulberg Lo-Tam. One Tree Hill came back strongly with two converted tries to close the lead. A long distance, run away try from Nathaniel Roma finished the game off, resulting in a 31-14 victory.
Squash
On Friday 30 June the Premier Boys narrowly lost 10-8 to St Peter’s College. The Open A Boys lost 12-0 to Auckland Grammar School on Friday 30 June and the Open B Boys had a fantastic 3-1 win over Rutherford College. The Open B Girls drew 2-2 with Western Springs College on Monday 26th June.

TAUREWA CAMP 2017 Year 13, Year 12 and Year 10 students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp. We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure. Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to tell their parents early that their camps are coming up this year. SENIOR MENTORING GROUP Our senior Maori Mentoring Group had their final session in the Whare this week. The after school sessions were run by Jason Tutara from AUT University and focused on developing tertiary awareness and personal confidence. With much positive feedback received from the students involved, we look forward to the sessions resuming in Term 3.
