C.I.E. FEES DUE 4PM FRI 30 JUNE Many sports have a challenge shield or cup - at senior level the most famous would have to be the Ranfurly Shield. In secondary schoolboy hockey it's the Bartholomew Cup - and its new home is a very proud Avondale College!

Over past four years the trophy has been won by top-tier hockey teams: Westlake Boys (three times), Hamilton Boys High School (twice), St Paul's Collegiate, Kingsway School, Kristin College, and end of last year, Mt Albert Grammar School.

However, after Avondale's 1st XI beat MAGS 1-0 in a tight match on 3rd May 2017, the trophy has now come to us!

This is an exciting victory following on from our boys' successful campaign last year which saw them win the Olympic Stick Tournament in 2016.

The next challenge game will be against Auckland Grammar School next week on Wednesday 5 July - come and support our boys on Avondale's turf at 5pm!

All fees for Cambridge International Due this Friday by Examinations must be paid in 4pm full by 4pm Friday 30 June.

Avondale College is obliged to confirm all candidate entries to Britain and to make payment soon after this date.

This means that we are unable to enter students who have not paid by 30 June.

Payment should be made by internet banking, or via the parent payment portal through Family Connection, or at the College office between 8.00am and 4.00pm.

SHOW CAMP The lead cast of Avondale College's show for 2017, Rock of Ages (School Edition), were introduced to the songs and script of the Tony Award-nominated Broadway musical at last week's three day Show Camp. With plenty of eighties hits from bands like Night Ranger, REO Speedwagon, Pat Benatar, Twisted Sister and many others, it was a fun bonding experience for the students and staff involved!

The hard work now begins as the cast and crew now work towards show week which runs from 18-23 September.

DEON WINS WORLD POOL CHAMPIONSHIPS

HIGH TEA Year 9 Food Technology students have been hard at work in recent weeks planning and creating the perfect high tea.

The unit of work has culminated with each class putting on a delicious high tea in which assorted small cakes, baked goods and savouries have been served to invited guests.

Food Technology teacher Miss Wood said the students have really enjoyed working on the project. "It's been fantastic seeing each and every student thrive during this task and taking pride in their work. They should be very proud of having conducted themselves in such a professional and mature manner!"

Congratulations to Deon Rawlings (Year 12) who has achieved fantastic results in the 2017 Junior VNEA Team World Championships held in Pennsylvania in mid-June.

In the singles, Deon placed 1st in the Speed Pool Under 18s. Furthermore, as part of team OB Cues Southern Stars (with teammates Jojo Coleman and Geffrina Harwood), the trio placed 1st in the world competition.

This is the second year running that Deon has made his mark in international competition. Last year he took out the title for the Minor Male (under 14) 8 Ball Singles Championship, as well as Scotch Doubles Championship with his brother Jared.

About 300 juniors from across the world take part in the VNEA World Pool Junior Championships and competition is tough.

Team manager Jason Robottom, says the Americans especially have a very high standard of play but the New Zealand team demonstrated that they are truly “world-class�.

SPORTS REPORT Sports Report - Week 8: 19-25 June

The 2nd XI Girls narrowly lost to Waitakere College 1-0, and the Junior Girls suffered a 4-0 loss against Baradene College on Wednesday 21st June.

On Saturday 24th June the 1st XI Boys had a great 2-1 win over Kelston Boys. They are now placed top of the table, midway through the season. The 2nd XI Boys had a fantastic 4-3 win over Mt Roskill and the 3rd XI Boys lost 8-1 to Henderson High School.

Badminton

Basketball

The Premier Girls showed great tenacity and determination in their game against Rangitoto College on Friday night. Rangitoto got out to a 26-3 lead at the first quarter buzzer but the second quarter saw us defend a lot better and make a few more baskets, with Tikenati Raion (Siggy) securing numerous steals. The score was 38-12 with two minutes on the clock, but the quarter ended with a run by Rangitoto as our depleted side tired. The half time score was 48-13. In the second half our girls’ confidence picked up and we played with a lot more aggression defensively and regularly troubled the Rangitoto team.

However, as the quarter ended our intensity dropped off, allowing easy baskets. The final score was 82-32 to Rangitoto College. Player of the Day was awarded to Tikenati Raion (Siggy) who was a constant threat on defence and set much of our transition offence. Special mention goes to another Year 9 student: Daphne Edwards, who has taken to heart the lessons from our Sports Academy, driving into space lay ups and drawing shooting fouls.

The Premier Boys played Western Springs College on Friday 23 June, winning by an astonishing 20 point margin: 100-80. A huge crowd turned out to support the boys who are proving each week they are hungry to reach the top of the Senior A Competition in the hopes of getting into the Premier Grade. It was a fantastic result and all the boys should be proud of their efforts as they show determination and perseverance week in, week out.

Under 15 A Boys won 30-24 over Waitakere College on Wednesday 21st June.

Under 15 B Boys suffered a 35-20 loss against Middle School West on Wednesday 21st June.

The Under 17 B Boys had a great team performance this week against Mt Albert Grammar, resulting in another big win. Standout players were Samuel Koerniadi who, as usual, was the team’s defensive Man of the Match – Samuel is always a strong defender, who puts in the work the whole time he’s on the court. Also, Francis Intic proved to be a headache for the MAGs defence and offence, applying pressure on and off the ball and scoring effortlessly against a strong Mt Albert Grammar defence. The final score was 48-22 to Avondale.

The Year 9 A Boys played extremely well on Saturday 25th June, however narrowly lost 2-0 to Westlake Boys.

Hockey

The 1st XI Boys narrowly lost 2-1 to Rangitoto College on Wednesday 21st June.

The 1st XI Girls suffered an 8-2 loss against Rangitoto College on Thursday 22nd June. Goal scorers were Jayla Fletcher and Claudia Goodison. Captain Ruby Coombes led by example, dribbling the ball past defenders straight through the middle, giving our wingers the opportunity to get into position to attack. We were able to hold out Rangitoto in the first half where they scored only three of the eight goals. Dropping our structure a little, we let a couple goals in before regaining momentum again.

This week the Under 15 Boys were up against Macleans College, who are a team not to be under-estimated, currently placed in the middle of the league. Played on neutral territory at the Mt Roskill turf, the match began at a fast pace with possession changing hands multiple times. Our defenders, Rohan Sharma and Dipan Patel, worked tirelessly to keep the opposition out of our circle, and a tense first half ended at 0-0. Ten minutes into the second half, Hersh Patel took off at lightening pace, smashing a solid hit from the edge of the circle to the right of the keeper, sneaking through just shy of the upright for a great goal to put us 1-0 in front. The game continued to be hard fought by both teams. Shivang Patel made the attack look simple with his natural flair; however, the goal remained out of reach. More solid defence from our mid-fielders dropping back, assisted in frustrating the opposition’s attack. As time was running out, we were given a PC opportunity that was controlled and struck fiercely by Liam Law-Telea.

The ball lifted just a little too much, smashing past the goalie and into the net only millimetres above the back-board: no goal. A close game and a very rewarding 1-0 win as the boys are now enjoying playing better as a team. A top four placing is now guaranteed as we head to the final qualifying round next week.

The Under 17 Girls had an impressive 56-16 win over Green Bay High School on Thursday 22nd June. Outstanding for Avondale were Maryanne Moataane and Lavinia Latu. And a special mention of Chelsey Whiu who had her best game of the season and Grace Nweke who again was a massive presence at both ends of the court.

Cross Country

Congratulations to Joanna Poland who came fourth in the Year 9 Junior Girls New Zealand Secondary Schools' Cross Country Championships in Christchurch. A fantastic effort!

Football

The 1st XI Girls had a great 2-0 win over Waiuku College on Wednesday 21st June.

Lacrosse

On Thursday 22nd June, Avondale Black lost 24-5 against Mt Albert B and Avondale White suffered a 10-3 loss to Mt Albert C.

The Under 14 Rugby team had a top-of-the-table clash against Tamaki College on a wet Saturday morning. An excellent first half resulted in a 17-5 half time lead, with tries from full-back Casey Wills and a double from second-five Ben Hickman. Tamaki came back strongly in the second half and scored a converted try on the last play of the game to take the win 19-17. Despite the heartbreaking loss there were many solid periods of play to build upon as the boys look to set themselves up for play-off rugby next term.

Year 10 White vs HHS lost 13-14 Player of the Day was awarded to Lauolive Roma and special mention to Cassidy Malone.

Year 10 Black vs Massey 10B lost 20-6 Player of the Day was awarded to Faith Faumui.

Year 9 Black vs Rutherford won 18-16 Player of the Day was awarded to Monique Compain.

Year 9 White vs HHS won 14-10 Player of the Day was awarded to Nancy Tuituu.

Rugby League

The 1st XIII suffered a 24-10 loss against Western Springs College.

The Under 15 Boys drew 18-18 with Sir Edmund Hillary Collegiate. The boys all showed great tenacity and never gave up.

Rugby Union

With a number of players missing due to injuries and illness, the depleted Avondale 1st XV faced a confident Mt Roskill side, who were sitting third in the table. The conditions were appalling and the Mt Roskill field did not cope well, turning into a mud bath for the majority of the match. The Avondale side came out strongly, showing great attacking and defence play from kick-off. Our team adjusted well to the testing conditions, played smart and held their own in the scrum against a very heavy opposition forward pack. Nathan Matiavi scored the first try for Avondale and we went into half-time with a score of 7-5 to the opposition. The second half brought more rain and wind and it was difficult to differentiate the teams from their jerseys due to the mud. Branden Lee scored Avondale’s second try and this was converted by Jacob Anitelea. Nearing full-time, the Avondale team stepped up the attack but it wasn’t quite enough before the final whistle was blown. The side is going from strength to strength and is showing great HEART values mid-season. Final score 17-12 to Mt Roskill. Player of the Day was Branden Lee. The 2nd XV Boys suffered a 7-0 loss to Onehunga High School on Saturday 24th June.

The Under 15 Boys lost 22-8 against Tamaki College. Despite dominating possession and territory for most of the match, Avondale went down to a well drilled Tamaki side. Slippery conditions and pressure forced us to make many mistakes in the wrong end of the field and Tamaki took their opportunities. A highlight was an excellent team try finished in the corner by Samson Mafileo. Player of the day was Corey Wood who turned in a superb all round performance.

The 6th Grade restricted team lost 80-0 against Kings College. Player of the Day was awarded to Oliver Harrison.

Squash

The Senior A Boys lost 7-6 against Macleans on Friday 23rd June. Luke Gray won comfortably and Karl Heinemann won his tie also.

Underwater Hockey

Senior Open played two games on Tuesday 20th June and suffered an 8-1 loss to Howick College and a 6-0 loss to Glendowie College.

B

Squash

The Squash Team Championships was held on Tuesday 20th June to Wednesday 21st June. Avondale had Senior Boys and Senior Girls teams competing at Unitec Mt Albert.

HEART values were fully on display - great atawhai and respect was shown to the opposition; honesty if a point was incorrectly awarded for them, and tenacity and endeavour kept the teams going all day.

The girls lost their opening encounter 5-0 to a strong Takapuna side, and then lost 4-1 in a closely fought match (much closer than the scoreline suggests) against Elim. However, despite these disappointments, they bounced back for a fantastic 3-2 win against Orewa in their final game of the day - they were constantly improving as the day wore on. Based on results, the girls were drawn to play Orewa in the play offs for fifth and sixth.

The girls played with great spirit and in their final matches Angela Zhong lost 3-0, Ally Tang won 3-1, Adelia Roesli lost 0-3, Shereen Lee lost 0-3 and Shirley Chen won 3-2. This meant that overall they lost their play-off narrowly 2-3 and placed 6th overall. The girls have learnt a lot from this tournament and shown great team carmarderie and some promising ability.

The boys had a comfortable 4-1 win in their first match, and then faced a tough opponent in Macleans Senior. After Vatsal Gajjar played admirably and won his tie, Bhavik Patel lost and then top seed, Year 9 Brandon Adonis lost an epic tussle - probably the match of the day - 12-10 in the deciding set (each set is to 11 by two clear) so that Avondale were 2-1 down. Despite illness, Luke Gray put on a brave performance to win his tie and level the match up at 2-2. It fell to Lewis Rose to win the critical final tie. Lewis put on a sublime performance under pressure to win and secure an overall 3-2 victorious result. The boys topped their pool and went on to face Saint Kentigern in the semi-finals.

A dramatic semi against Saint Kents ended with Vatsal Gajjar coming from a set down against a higher graded player to win 9-11, 11-5, 11-8, 11-3 to seal an overall 3-2 victory. So, in their final the boys all of the boys were virtually all up against players graded higher than them. On paper, it should have been a comfortable win for Orewa. However, Luke Gray completed a fine personal tournament with a 12-10, 11-2, 11-4 win. He secured a 100% tournament record and shows great promise for the future.

Lewis Rose produced a very mature performance to win 11-4, 11-6, 11-8. Bhavik Patel produced some of his best squash, but lost 3-11, 5-11, 8-11 and Brandon Adonis had a very high-quality, fluctuating encounter where he ended up on the wrong side of a 3-11, 10-12, 11-5, 8-11 scoreline. It was a match that really could have gone either way and was a great experience which will put him in good stead for the future. This left the scoreline at 2-2 and once again it rested on Vatsal Gajjar. Vatsal dug deep, but unfortunately couldn't quite repeat his heroics in the semi-finals, this time succumbing to a 5-11, 11-7, 3-11, 9-11 loss. It was an incredibly tight match with really small margins.

The boys narrowly lost 2-3 and settled for a fine silver medal.

This was no less than their dedication deserved - they were all in school at 7am, as they often are, practising for their finals matches.

TAUREWA CAMP 2017 Year 13, Year 12 and Year 10 students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp.

We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure.
