HEART OF GOLD From Tuesday to Friday last week, students and staff were given the opportunity to anonymously post a HEART of Gold card in recognition of acts of HEART shown schoolwide. This was an initiative that began in 2016 and is directly linked with our Bullying Free Avondale Week activities. Thousands of cards were written to teachers, students, support staff, the property team, librarians, coaches and managers in recognition of the qualities of HEART shown both in and out of the classroom. Those writing the cards had to identify which HEART value was shown by the recipient and give a short comment to back up their choice. Cards were distributed on Tuesday morning this week, putting smiles on many faces schoolwide as we head into the second half of Term 2.

BRIDGE BUILDING Around sixty Year 9 and 10 students put their practical mathematical skills to the test on Friday as they took up the challenge of building a weight-bearing bridge using only skewers, glue and tape! The day was run by the Mathematics department, in preparation for the Auckland-wide bridge building competition later in the year. Teachers-in-charge, Ms Zhou and Mr Daniel said the teams worked hard to take up the challenge, and that they all showed creativity, thoughtfulness and cooperation. The bridges are due to be tested this week, with the winners having the opportunity to go through to the next stage of the competition.

SPORTS REPORT Week 5 Sports Report 29th-4th June
No sports were scheduled from Friday 2nd - Sunday 4th due to Queen’s Birthday Weekend
Badminton
The Senior A Boys had a 5-0 win against Liston College and the Senior B Boys won 3-2 against Waitakere College on Monday 29th May. The Senior A Girls won 5-0 over St Dominics and Senior B Girls lost 5-0 against ACG College on Monday 29th May.
Basketball
The Premier Boys had an outstanding 109-99 win over Northcote College on Monday 29th May. The U15 Girls narrowly lost to Mt Albert Grammar 18-13 on Thursday 1st June. Outstanding players for Avondale were Tikenati Raion and Angel-Aliska Taulapapa Sopoaga.
Football
The 1st XI Girls had two scheduled games this week. On Monday 29th May they had a great 3-1 win over Howick College and on Wednesday 31st they beat Marist College 3-1. The girls showed a lot of HEART values and great enthusiasm.
Netball
Premier 1 lost 33-27 against Green Bay High. Premier 2 lost 35-18 against Lynfield College. Senior Girls Black won 28-20 against Waitakere College. Senior Girls White lost 23-17 against Rutherford College. Senior Girls Gold narrowly lost 18-17 against Western Springs College. Senior Girls Silver won 29-12 against Henderson High. Senior Girls Grey lost 31-13 against Massey High.
Lacrosse
Avondale B team suffered a 17-7 loss to Mt Albert Grammar on Thursday 1st June.
Rugby League
The 1st XIII had a fantastic 22-18 win over Mt Albert Grammar on Monday 29th May. They then played a tough game against St Paul’s College two days later and suffered a 74-0 loss. To their credit, the boys all showed tenacity and never gave up. The U15 Boys had a fantastic 42-10 win over Manurewa High School on Wednesday 31st May.
The Junior Girls suffered a narrow 2-1 loss to Baradene College on Wednesday 31st May.
Hockey
On Monday 29th May the U15 Boys played Auckland Boys Grammar. Only three minutes in, a foot in the circle gave us our first penalty corner, which Liam Law-Telea converted with a strong hit. After some good defensive work, we found ourselves back down the opposing end with Shivang Patel executing a handy field goal after some good pressure and skills in the circle. Only fifteen minutes gone and we had an impressive 2-0 lead. Some great speed, dribbling and accurate passing was displayed on a number of occasions by Lex Revell-Lewis in the middle. A quick and well-executed field goal by Auckland Grammar late in the first half made it 2-1 at half time. The second half was frustrating for the team as the opposition were awarded a number of penalty corners. Up to four were saved by our hard working defenders, Rohan Patel, Dipan Patel and Rohan Sharma. Mid-fielder Fynn Shaw was solid and handy with his positional versatility. Finally, Grammar’s shots from corners made good to level the score with a hard fought draw at 2-2. The 1st XI Boys suffered a 7-0 loss to Auckland Boys Grammar on Wednesday 31st May. The 1st XI Girls had a great 1-0 win over Mt Albert Grammar on Thursday 1st June.

Squash
Both the Senior B Boys and Senior B Girls continued their excellent form this week in their games against Mt Albert Grammar. The Senior B Boys won 4-0 and The Senior B Girls also won all four matches on Wednesday 31st May.
Underwater Hockey
The Senior Open team played two games on Tuesday 30th May and suffered a 7-0 loss to Manurewa and a 9-0 loss to Glendowie.

TAUREWA CAMP 2017 Year 13, Year 12 and Year 10 students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp. We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure. Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to tell their parents early that their camps are coming up this year.
