YEAR 11 Kiahan Simons-Tipau There's no doubt about it: Avondale's got talent! Wednesday's final of the annual Talent Quest was a night to remember with instrumentalists, vocalists and dancers coming together to create a diverse and hugely entertaining evening. Returning to the Avondale College stage this year as a judge was musician (and alumnus) Thomas Stoneman (aka Thomston). He was joined on the judging panel by vocalist, song writer and producer Cherie Mathieson, and choreographer Eloise Gantuangco. The night concluded with the much-anticipated items from the staff and prefects. ESPORT Avondale College's Esports team made headlines in Tuesday's Western Leader and on stuff.co.nz this week, following the commencement of a new, knockout series for the inaugural National High School Esports League. Avondale College has an unbeaten 5-0 record going into their next match against Mt Roskill Grammar School and for the five man team, "it is all about teamwork." "You need to be mentally fit for this game and you need to develop strategy so the concept of teamwork is very important," says Avondale team captain, Sean Yu. SPORTS REPORT Football
Avondale College 1st XI vs Kings College Football: 6-2 Win The Boys 1st XI Football Team began their season on Saturday in the A1 division with an away match at Kings College. The first half saw the boys concede a goal in the 43rd minute to trail at half time 1-0 with a very well taken header. Despite the boys dominating the first half, they were unable to break the Kings’ defence. At half time the players discussed what they would do to win this match. A stirring speech from Daniel Fitzgerald at the half and advice from Coach van Beurden motivated the boys and within the first five minutes of the second half the boys were level 1-1 with a goal from Joao Abreu. With the scores now equalised, the boys lifted and began to dominate Kings. It was quickly 2-1 to Avondale again with a second goal from Joao Abreu. From the Kings kick off the boys then let the Kings players past their strong defence, bringing the score to 2-2. What a second half! Regrouping the boys knew that Kings were tiring. Justice Michael was then brought on as a substitute and his strong runs down the right hand side of the pitch could not be stopped. Justice set up Joao for his 3rd goal of the match giving him a hat trick. Later in the half Justice would score a back heel himself, giving Avondale a 4-2 lead with 20 minutes to go. It was at this point that the flood gates opened, with Avondale’s 5th goal coming from again Joao Abreu, his tally for this match would be four goals. Then with five minutes to go Aidan Carey , who performed well in the midfield, dribbled past a number of Kings Players to then be fouled in the penalty box. A penalty was given by the referee and Tobias Holthuis-Spann stepped up to take it. Tobias calmly slotted the ball past the King’s keeper to give Avondale a commanding lead of 6-2. The boys showed true tenacity and endeavour to start their season off with a win and players and parents can be proud of the work from these boys in their first A1 match of the season. This result puts the boys in 1st place, a position the boys will want to remain in all season. Next up: Takapuna Grammar this Saturday 13 May, Field 1 at Avondale College, kick off at 12pm.
boys defended as if their lives depended on it! Fitness was key and it showed on the pitch, with the boys contesting the ball at all times. Hersh Patel scored an outstanding goal midway through the second half which looked more like a powerful cover drive from a cricket bat! The ball slammed into the backboard to make it 2-0. Avondale kept the opposition goal-less to the end.
Rugby
The first game of the 1st XV season was against Botany Downs College. This year the Avondale 1st XV team includes a large number of new players from Years 11-12 with a small number of Year 13’s and only three players in the starting line-up from 2016. However, while this young team brings a lack of experience to the field, they make-up for any shortfall in enthusiasm and HEART values. In contrast to the Avondale team, the Botany team included a large number of experienced players from the previous season with some weighing in at 120-130kg. After a rousing haka from the Botany team, the boys started the game strong and left Botany under no illusion they were here to play. Strength and experience came through clearly from Botany and they ran in four tries, a conversion and a penalty. The Avondale team regrouped at half time and after rousing words from the coaches, went into the second half with their heads held high. It was a game of two halves and the Avondale team fought back strongly with #14 Aiden Tuilaepa scoring a try in the corner. While the final score was 25-5 to Botany, there were some promising signs going into the season. Best Defence Player was awarded to Dylan Wood and Player of the Day Jacob Anitelea.
Basketball
Premier Boys Basketball team had a great win beating Massey by 30 points in their first game of the season.
The Boys 1st XI Football Team
Hockey
The U15 Hockey boys had a great game, winning 2-0 against St Kentigern College. About ten minutes into the game Shravan Patel dribbled right around the defenders along the baseline and shot a very difficult goal at a tight angle to put Avondale on the scoreboard. This team has good depth so subbing was used extensively to maintain fitness in the second half. Most of the game was spent on the attack, although our goalie, Ritesh Hanmanthu, made two great saves from two breakaways that were against the run of play. The 4

TAUREWA CAMP 2017 Year 13, Year 12 and Year 10 students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp. We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure. Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to tell their parents early that their camps are coming up this year. HOW DO I PAY? • Fees are paid to Avondale College and must be paid, in full by 4:00pm, 18 August, 2017. If you do not meet this deadline then fees must be paid directly to NZQA. Fees received after 1 December will incur a $50 late charge, payable directly to NZQA. • Paying your fees will enable your results to be recorded on your Record of Achievement and to receive any certificates.
CAN I GET HELP TO PAY? If you are a Domestic Student you can apply for Financial Assistance if your family cannot afford to pay your fees. To get this help your parents or caregivers must meet one of the following conditions: • be receiving a Work and Income or StudyLink benefit or have a Community Services Card . • have joint family income that qualifies for a Community Services Card. • have two or more children entered as candidates with NZQA fees more than $200. If approved, the fees would be $20 per student or $30 per family.
