TAURANGA JAZZ FESTIVAL
Multiple Awards for our Jazz students Term 1 concluded with the much-anticipated Tauranga Jazz Festival held at the Baycourt Theatre over Easter. Despite a delayed start due to Cyclone Cook, our Big Band and two Jazz Combos performed superbly, winning a gold award (Avondale Jazz Combo) and two silver awards (Big Band and Blue Note Combo). Particular congratulations go to Kiara Fernandes who won the award for the best vocalist, and to James Poss who won the award for the best guitarist. These are astonishing achievements given the calibre of the students performing at this national event, and we warmly congratulate James, Kiara, and teacher-in-charge Mr Robinson for achieving such outstanding success. The trip to Tauranga also included a four hour gig at the Tauranga Farmers’ Market on Saturday morning – the sixth year that we have performed here. The chairs put out in front of our stage were full all morning as market goers enjoyed listening to jazz in the sunshine.
BIANCA OFF TO INTERNATIONAL BIOLOGY OLYMPIAD Year 13 student Bianca Craill is on her way to the University of Warwick (England) in July, after being selected for the New Zealand team to compete at the International Biology Olympiad. With only four places available in the team, the nationwide competition was fierce and the selection process rigorous. Over the past eight months, Bianca successfully completed on-line tutorial assignments and multiple rounds of examinations culminating in her being chosen for the annual New Zealand International Biology Olympiad (NZIBO) selection and training camp. During the nine day programme, which hosted academics from Waikato, Otago, Massey and Auckland Universities, Bianca outranked her peers in both practical and theoretical tests to place amongst the top four biology students in the country. Bianca's selection to the New Zealand team highlights once again the superb success Avondale College students have achieved in this competition - she is the third Avcol biologist to represent her country in this international competition in the past four years.

SCHOOL SHOW: ROCK OF AGES Avondale College is excited to announce the school show for 2017 will be Rock of Ages 101 - The High School Edition. This is a fun rock musical with lots of amazing 80s rock ballads and we look forward to it being really enjoyable for all. Auditions will be held for Years 11-13, on Thursday 4 May. Years 9 -10 auditions will be announced next week. Students who are interested in auditioning need to sign up with Ms Newlands in the Drama Department.

ANZAC DAY On ANZAC day the Head Prefects of Avondale College and staff were invited to march with the RSA veterans, members and families to the service held at the memorial site in Avondale. Head Boy Ezrah Kapeteni and Head Girl Sophie Carter-Peters were asked to speak to the hundreds of people gathered there and offer their perspective on this special day. They represented the College with Ezrah Kapeteni, Carmel Sepuloni and pride and the crowd appreciated their Sophie Carter-Peters comments. “For younger generations, it is sometimes difficult to understand why it is with gratitude that we should remember, but we have enjoyed the benefits of the peace and easy existence, which was purchased at the cost of many lives. Few of us have ever had to risk everything ourselves, or chance our loved ones to the dangers of war.” – Ezrah Kapeteni “ANZAC Day is important because it humanises the past. It gives us a chance to stop and see these heroes as they were and are. People, teenagers, sons and daughters. People like you and me. These soldiers and nurses and leaders we commemorate on this day are a living, breathing part of us. They are the foundation on which we stand. INTERMEDIATE ICT INTENSIVE PROGRAMME Fifty four participants from five of our neighbouring intermediate schools took up the invitation to take part in a special two day digital immersion programme during the first week of the holidays. Organised by Mr Paul McClean, Director of Avondale's Innovation Programme, the students rose superbly to the ten-hour challenge in which they were engaged with a digital literacy programme that was individually tailored to each participant's prior knowledge and learning styles. By the end of the two day programme, 51 industry-level certifications were gained! 9 x industry certifications in Microsoft Word (Five students had never used full functionality MSWord previously!) 37 x IC3 Spark qualifications 5 x IC3 qualifications, including one student who obtained the full IC3 Digital Literacy qualification This was a superb result from a highly motivated group of ten and elevenyear-olds. Well done to all who took part!

BOYS 1ST XI FOOTBALL PLAYOFF A 6-0 win last night has taken us into the Senior A1 division for the coming season, starting with an away trip at Kings on Saturday. After a performance like the one yesterday, it is often hard to single out individual players for praise, because as a unit, they all performed excellently. TAUREWA CAMP 2017 Year 13, Year 12 and Year 10 students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp. We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure. Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to tell their parents early that their camps are coming up this year. HOW DO I PAY? • Fees are paid to Avondale College and must be paid, in full by 4:00pm, 18 August, 2017. If you do not meet this deadline then fees must be paid directly to NZQA. For details see www.nzqa.govt.nz. Fees received after 1 December will incur a $50 late charge, payable directly to NZQA. • Paying your fees will enable your results to be recorded on your Record of Achievement and to receive any certificates.
CAN I GET HELP TO PAY? If you are a Domestic Student you can apply for Financial Assistance if your family cannot afford to pay your fees. To get this help your parents or caregivers must meet one of the following conditions: • be receiving a Work and Income or StudyLink benefit or have a Community Services Card . • have joint family income that qualifies for a Community Services Card. • have two or more children entered as candidates with NZQA fees more than $200. If approved, the fees would be $20 per student or $30 per family.
HOW DO I GET HELP TO PAY?
To get financial assistance you have to fill in a Financial Assistance form and give it to your school. You can get this form from your school or the NZQA website at: www.nzqa.govt.nz/financialassistance.
