ENVIRONMENTAL COUNCIL CLEANS UP AT PIHA A keen group of environmentalists met at North Piha on Saturday morning to spend time combing the beach and dunes for rubbish. Led by Mrs Lamb, Mr Stephens and Ms Visser, the group collected a huge pile of debris, including rope, socks and other clothing, jandals, plastic bags and 15 bottles of beer (one full!). The clean up event starts off the Environmental Council's campaign to raise awareness at Avondale College around our rubbish and where it ends up if not disposed of properly. Tuesday's Homeroom lesson addressed the issue of litter in school and in Week 10 the students will be holding lunchtime events to highlight the use of plastics in our every day lives. This will be followed up next term with a visit from Hayden Smith (local New Zealander of the Year 2016) who trawls the Hauraki Gulf for rubbish every day.

JUNIOR DEBATING The topic of whether cats should be banned really got the fur flying yesterday, as two teams of Avondale's junior debaters hotly argued both points of views in their Western Zone debate competition. Putting their personal viewpoints aside, both teams enthusiastically debated the moot: "That this house would ban cats." The teams worked hard to develop their arguments and thought well on their feet to discredit the points of view presented by their opposition. Avondale 1 (affirming the moot) won against St Dominics 2, while Avondale 2 (negating) lost to Rutherford 3. Congratulations to Nimit Parekh and Grace Elijas who were judged 'best speaker' for each of their debates. Team 1: Grace Elijas, Yi Ting Cheng (Vivienne) and Zoe BelaunzaranConsejo. Team 2: Alfred Wang, Nimit Parekh and Shreya Sriram.

SPORTS REPORT Sports Report 20th-26th March
CRICKET
The 1st XI Boys played against Rangitoto College on Saturday 26th March in one of two semi-final matches of the Senior A Grade. Rangitoto lost the toss so they batted first. This was a good call, with Avondale bowling them out for 130 runs. The pick of the bowlers was Thareeq Saldhan who took 4 wickets for just 16 runs. Avondale then batted and also scored 130 runs, resulting in a drawn game. Avondale was led again by Liam Robertson with 46 runs (this is the second game in a row where Liam has been the game’s highest scorer). As this was a semi-final the players moved to a ‘bowl off’, whereby 5 bowlers had one ball to hit the far wickets. Unfortunately, Avondale lost this 2-1 so will now play on April 1st in the playoff for 3rd & 4th. The Year 10 Boys won against Auckland Grammar on Saturday 25th March, scoring 161/4 after 20 overs. Lobsang Sherpa scored 63 (not out) and Auckland Grammar scored 107 all out in 19.2 overs. Nazif Qurbankiel and Kishan Patel got 3 wickets. The Year 9 Boys played extremely well against King’s College on Saturday 25th March. Avondale scored 131/8 and Kings scored 99 runs all out.

TAG FOOTBALL
The North/Central Western Zone Tag Championships was held at Moire Park, Massey on Wednesday 22nd March. It was a brilliant day, with Avondale coming away with some outstanding results. The Senior Girls made it to the top of their pool after beating Lynfield College 11-0 and Orewa College 14-0. They then went on to win their quarter final against Auckland Girls Grammar 4-0 and beat Mt Roskill College in the semi-final 8-3. The girls played extremely well and won the final against Glenfield College 4-1. This team will now progress further to the Auckland Secondary Schools Championships on Friday 7 April at Cornwall Park, Greenlane. The Senior Boys won their first two games against Whangaparaoa College 5-4 and Green Bay 11-3. They then lost to Massey High School 7-5 and were narrowly beaten by Lynfield College 6-5. They then went on to beat Waitakere College and lost against Massey High 11-2 to finish 6th overall for the tournament.
TENNIS
The Senior Girls played Kings College on Saturday 25th March and won 7-2. With only four players the Senior Boys played Kelston Boys on Saturday 25th March and produced a great win 6-3.
WATERPOLO
The Senior Boys won their semi-final 6-3 against Macleans College on Sunday 26th March. The team played an excellent defensive game, with notable effort from the team’s goalie Finn Stoneman.
