Over four hundred Avondale College students sang and danced their hearts out at Polyfest last week. With thirteen different cultural groups performing, we were the largest contributor of groups across the Diversity and Cultural stages. We were also well represented in the speech competitions on the cultural stages, and three of our students were awarded prizes for their speeches. In all, over 9000 secondary students took to the stage over the four day event, and more than 90,000 people attended. A huge thank you to all our wonderful students, staff, parents, family members, ex-students and tutors who came together to create the superb performances that showcased such pride in culture and in the College. PROGRESS REPORT EVENING TUESDAY 11 APRIL 4.30 - 7.30PM HELD IN THE ATRIUM Progress reports for all students will be posted shortly. There is an evening planned for parents to meet with teachers to discuss this report. This will be held in the Atrium on Tuesday 11 April between 4:30pm and 7:30pm and is intended for parents only. Please note that online bookings of interview times will be open from Monday 27 March through our Family Connection site. From Monday 10 April appointments will be filled in manually by students who should see their subject teachers with the appointment form posted out with the report.

Creativity is flowing in the soft materials classrooms at lunchtime as several students prepare their original garments for the Eye on Nature Wearable Art competition. The fashion show is to be held at the Botanic Gardens on the free family day on Saturday 1 April this year, where entrants will model garments created to specifically relate to New Zealand gardens. In addition to the wearable arts competition, the organisers are also running cooking and art competitions as part of this fun environmental education event. Congratulations to alumnus Ethan Sorrell, who is currently studying on a scholarship to Cambridge University, England. Ethan has won a prestigious 'Cambridge Blue' for high jump, and is also captaining the Gonville & Caius Football team...

COMMERCE MARKET DAY Year 11 Business Studies students took the opportunity to put their theory into practice with a Market Day held in D Block at lunchtime today. Given the task of preparing cold food products for sale, the two classes of students have worked in small business teams with allocated roles including CEO, finance and production. Market research had been undertaken to gauge demand for their products, and a business risk was taken in covering the costs of developing their products in the lead up to today's Market Day. "The teams have been working hard to make this a successful day for themselves and their customers," said Business Studies' teacher Jeff Thomson. Their hard work and planning certainly paid off, with a variety of cold food products being sold to an appreciative customer base of Avondale students!
FAMILY CONNECTION The Avondale Family Connection allows families to have direct access, through the internet, to a wide range of information about their child’s academic performance, attendance, activities, events, trips, parent/teacher interview appointments and teacher only days. The information provided includes: Class allocations, timetables, class teachers, NCEA and Cambridge results, attendance data, detention records and assessment reports. CENTRAL WESTERN ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Athletics Central Western Zone Championships was held at the Trusts Stadium Arena on Tuesday 28 February. Avondale had a great number of students competing and the results of students who placed in the top three for each event are below. Avondale have 13 athletes who have qualified for the Greater Athletics Championships which were held this week on Tuesday 21 March. Results from the Central Western Zone Championships are as follows: Junior Girls 200m Dash Heat 4th Faith Faumui - 28.74
The 1st XI Boys beat Mt Roskill Grammar on Saturday 18 March. Avondale scored an impressive 247 all out (in the 48th over). The batting was led by Lathira Fonseka who scored 64 and Liam Robertson with 74. Avondale then bowled Mt Roskill out for 74 runs. Leading the way was Jay Patel who took 4 wickets for 26 runs. Included in those 4 wickets was an outstanding hat-trick. Thareeq Saldhan also took 2 for 10. The 2nd XI Boys lost to Saint Kentigern College’s 5XI. We batted first and scored 96 runs all out. Luke Howsam top scored with 18 runs. Luke Howsam also claimed 2 wickets along with Dylan Cardno. This was a great effort overall! After being 20/4 down the boys came back and put on a competitive total which was defended well with some tight bowling from Luke, Dylan and Luke Gray.

The Senior Boys played two games on Wednesday. They won against Green Bay Junior A 9-3 and beat Westlake Boys 7-2. Our Senior Girls Played Takapuna Grammar and won 7-2.
WATERPOLO
The Senior Boys were beaten by Green Bay 12-4 on Friday 17 March and played King’s College on Sunday 19 March, losing 11-6.

The Swimming Central Western Zone was held on Monday 13 March at West Wave Aquatic Centre. Avondale had 23 swimmers competing. Avondale College competed in the Auckland Secondary Schools Ultimate Championships on Sunday 19 March. The girls won 4 out of 6 of their round robin games. Unfortunately they had a very close loss to Takapuna 1 which would have had them play for 1st and 2nd. The entered their final match tired and half the team had cramps but they managed to pull through and take the match 5-4 to place third overall. The boys entered their final game in 4th place, playing for 3rd and 4th against Auckland Grammar, who they had lost to earlier in the day. They managed to come back from being 3 points down and win the match to place third overall as well.
COLLEGE SPORT AUCKLAND ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS
Two junior Avondale College students brought home three gold medals from the Auckland Athletics Championships held yesterday at Mt Smart Stadium. Joanna Poland (Year 9) once again led the field in her distance races, winning gold in both the Junior Girls' 800m and 1500m, and Faith Faumui (Year 10) won first place in the Junior Girls Long Jump with a jump of 4.89m.

Athletics - three firsts in one week for Joanna Poland Joanna Poland has had quite a week! The Year 9 athlete has won three firsts in distance events over the last four days: in the 3000m for her grade at the Auckland Junior Athletics Champs in the weekend (where she set an Auckland record), and in the Junior Girls 800m and 1500m at yesterday's Greater Auckland Secondary Schools' Athletics Championships. Congratulations, Joanna!
TAUREWA CAMP 2017 Year 13, Year 12 and Year 10 students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp. We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure. Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to tell their parents early that their camps are coming up this year.
