Avondale College's Prefects were introduced to the College at Monday's assemblies, where they were presented with their official badges. Following the announcement of the Head Prefects and Deputies, the school was addressed by our new Head Boy Ezra Kapeteni and Head Girl Sophie Carter-Peters. For the full list of prefects see page 5.

OUR STUDENTS MAKE THE NEWS TV3 sent reporter Tom McCrae to Avondale on Monday to canvas the views of some of our senior students as to whether they thought the voting age should be dropped to 16. The item appeared that night on Newshub, with our students articulating a variety of viewpoints on the issue.

CAMP CASTAWAY A HIT FOR OUTDOOR ED The leadership skills of 38 of our Year 12 and 13 Outdoor Education students were brought to the fore last week as they led an amazing Camp Castaway for our neighbouring school, Avondale Intermediate.

One hundred and twenty students from Years 7 and 8 took part in the pirate themed camp, which was held at Shakespear Regional Park. Led by Director of Outdoor Education, Mr Hemera, our Year 13 students planned a host of fun activities including raft building, snorkelling, problem solving, team building and more.

The Year 12 students were the group leaders, and did a superb job in looking after their younger ‘buddies’ as they encouraged them and supported them through their activities.

“I was just so proud of them,” said Mr Hemera. “They worked so hard!”

He hopes this will be the first of many such camps in the future.

SPORTS REPORT 27th Feb- 5th March

CRICKET

The 1st XI played against Botany and had a good win. We lost the toss, which proved a very good result with Botany batting first and being bowled out for 152. Lathira Fonseka took 4 wickets for 11 runs and Kevin Gattu took 3 wickets for 19 runs. We then got the required runs with 23 overs to spare and for the loss of only 2 wickets. Lathira ended up not out on 61 and Liam Robertson unbeaten on 29. Final result: Botany 152/10, Avondale 153/2.

The 2nd XI Boys lost to Lynfield on Saturday. Lynfield scored 216/5 and Avondale 153/2.

TOUCH

The mixed touch team played a couple of close games against Kaipara College and Manurewa College.

Unfortunately we lost both contests 7-5 and 8-7. The team is improving every game, gaining a greater understanding of the rules and strategies of the game.

Stand out performers from last night’s games were Christiana Ikinepule with her solid defence, Cheala Masae with some outstanding finishing, Cole Brown's wheels in a full field intercept try and the leadership of Matthias Ikinofo.

The Senior Girls Played Green Bay and lost 6-1.

SOFTBALL

Senior Girls lost to Massey 11-1.

VOLLEYBALL

The Senior Boys played against Auckland Grammar and lost 2-0.

The Senior Girls A Team played two games. They beat Mt Albert 2-0 and lost to Lynfield 2-1. The girls have enhanced their understanding of the game and are implementing rotation and strategic offensive moves to win points. Stand out performers were Maria Ofati in the middle position and Tapu Sautia whose serving accuracy won 9 straight points.

The Senior Girls B Team played two games against St Dominic’s A and B team. They beat St Dominic’s B 2-0 and lost to St Dominic’s A Team 2-0. This is a developing team which has successfully picked up a win in their final round of games last week. Captain Vila-Rose Feala has been reliable in games and has set a great leadership example for the young and international players in the team.

Having completed the Avondale College Championships on Thursday 23 February, the top students were selected for the Central/ West Zone Championships at the Trusts Arena which were held on Tuesday 28 February. Despite scorching heat, our athletes did extremely well to take out a number of top placings in a variety of events.

TENNIS

Senior boys played Waitakere and won 5-4. It was a very close contest as they had some good players - scores were almost all tie breaks for each match, but fortunately we came away with a win! Leo Cekus (Captain) was outstanding; he played against the more experienced Waitakere number 1. He was composed and fought for every ball and won 6-4.

The Senior Girls played Kings and won 6-3.

Congratulations to three Avondale College students who brought home medals from the Auckland Athletics Track & Field Champs held at Mt Smart over Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Joanna Poland (Year 9) won two golds: for 800m and 1500m, Lex Revell-Lewis (Year 9) won silver for the 400m, and Year 12 student Dylan Jenkinson won gold in the 800m - a great result!

WATERPOLO

The Senior Boys drew 6-all with Auckland Grammar on Sunday.

First quarter result was 5-2 to Grammar. Avondale fought hard in the second and third quarter, bringing the score to 5-3, then in the fourth quarter Grammar scored one more goal. However, Avondale were determined to keep up and scored the final goal in the last minute, bringing the final result to 6-all. Goals were scored by Adam Milne (5) and Coel Phillips (1). Our goalie Kennedy Nikolaison did an awesome job saving many goals.

ULTIMATE FRISBEE

Our Senior Boys won both their games. They beat Northcote 7-2 and Westlake 9-2.

Senior girls beat Takapuna Grammar 7-1 and won against Green Bay High School.

There were some very excited cricketers at the College on Wednesday when Mr N Smith, using his South African connections, brought star test bowler Vernon Philander into Avondale College. He spent time talking cricket to the boys and signing their cricket equipment. He accepted an Avondale cap from Mr Smith and went away with thanks from our captain Kevin Gattu, as we wished him good luck (but not too much luck!) in the upcoming series with the Black Caps.

TAUREWA CAMP 2017 Year 13, Year 12 and Year 10 students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp.

We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure.
