Avondale’s very top scholars were honoured at a special Scholars' Assembly on Monday, in celebration of their outstanding achievements in last year’s New Zealand Scholarship and Cambridge Examinations. New Zealand Scholarship examinations are the most challenging of examinations for secondary school students in their final year of schooling. Candidates are expected to demonstrate high-level critical thinking, abstraction and generalisation, and to integrate, synthesise and apply knowledge, skills, understanding and ideas to complex situations. Twenty four Scholarships were awarded to twenty Avondale College students this year, including one Outstanding Scholarship awarded to Natasha van Etten in Dance. Rokaya Islam (NCEA Dux in 2016) was awarded three Scholarships (in Biology, Chemistry and English) and two students won two: Jingyuan Huan (Design and Design & Visual Communications); and Lenna Kunisawa (Japanese and Statistics). Notably, three students were awarded a scholarship while still in Year 12: Anataia van Leeuwen (Geography), Danielle Twentyman (Dance) and Spring Han (Physics). Also acknowledged were the three students who topped New Zealand in four Cambridge exams, as well as the teachers and families who have supported all of these outstanding students in achieving such high success. For a full list of names see page 2.

WHANAU BBQ
Photos by Freya Pearce and Ashleigh McNaught
It has been quite a week for our top athletes! The Avondale College Championships were held at Mt Smart last Thursday, with a large contingent of hopefuls lining up to pit themselves against the best athletes at Avondale College. From this event the top students were selected for the Western /Central Zone competition held at the Trusts Stadium yesterday.
Families, students, staff and Board of Trustees members made the most of the end-of-summer sunshine at our Whanau BBQ held outside the whare on Wednesday evening. It was a great chance to catch up, connect, and enjoy a meal together as the year gets underway. Many thanks to all who came along - we look forward to seeing you again!

CRICKET
The 1st XI Boys scored 255/5 vs Liston College. Kevin Gattu, the captain, led the way with a very impressive 145 (off 135 balls and included 17 fours) while Liam Robertson contributed a very solid 43. The team then bowled Liston out for 87 with Vatsal Gajjar taking 3 wickets for 12 runs while Lithira Fonseka, Kennedy Nikolaison and Jay Patel all took two wickets apiece. The 2nd XI Boys lost to Auckland Grammar on Saturday. Auckland Grammar scored 235/2 and Avondale 133/4. Year 10 boys beat Northcote College. Year 9 boys scored 113/8 against Mt Albert Grammar, who won the match scoring 153 for just one wicket.
TOUCH
Our Senior Mixed Team had two losses this week against Howick College 8-2 and Mangere College 5-2. The Senior Girls team played Lynfield, losing in the final minutes of the game after Lynfield scored two tries, taking the final score to a 3-1 win to Lynfield. Great playmaking skills were shown by Myah Shirley-Skipps and Channah Wilson (who scored a try from an intercept running the length of the field in the second half ).
VOLLEYBALL
Senior Boys had two games this week where they lost to Mt Albert (2-0) and won against Marcellin College (2-0). Senior Girls A had two losses this week against Mt Roskill and Epsom Girls. The Senior A girls played their most competitive round of games last week against Epsom Girls and Mt Roskill, putting up a fight each game as they scrambled for every ball on defense and put the pressure on during attack. This week saw the team put together everything they have learnt in training into the games and the communication factor definitely played an important part in the overall game play and culture of the team. There is now just one more week of zone games before the three day Auckland Championship Tournament. The Senior Girls B had two games where they played against Henderson high and lost 2-0 then played Green Bay and lost the final set by one point. They all played extremely well and as a team.
TENNIS
The Senior Girls played against Auckland Grammar and won 5/4 games.
WATERPOLO
The Senior Boys’ team kicked started their season on Friday 24 February against Sacred Heart, losing the match 7-12. They redeemed themselves at their second game on Sunday 26 February, beating Saint Kentigern College 12-4 and showing great tenacity throughout.

ALUMNI NEWS HARVARD SCHOLARSHIP FOR MEILI HAN Congratulations to former student (and Avondale College Dux in 2008) Meili Han, who has been awarded the Frank Knox Memorial Fellowship to Harvard Business School. Meili completed her BCom (First Class Honours) in Finance and Economics at Auckland University, and is now working towards her Masters of Business Administration at Harvard. As part of her MBA Meili will study a wide range of business leadership practices. One area of particular interest is international business.
