Thursday's whole school Athletics Day was a brilliant event, with school-wide participation in a range of athletic events. Adding to the fun of the day were the Year 13 students who ran, jumped, hopped and skipped through their events while wearing costumes. The more serious athletes who emerged from the day will go on to compete in the Avondale College Championships Athletics Day to be held at Mt Smart on Thursday 23 February. PERFORMING ARTS ACADEMY OFF TO A GREAT START On Monday 13th February 99 students in Year 9 and 10 met in the theatre to begin their year in the 2017 Performing Arts Academy. The Performing Arts Academy fosters the talent and skill of our junior students who are passionate about their learning in dance, drama, and music. Throughout the year, students undertake five lessons a fortnight (at 7:45am) to develop technical and performance skills in their chosen art form. Look out for their performances this year!

We are running our annual Netsafe Parents Evening on 1 March. Come along to find out how to help your children be responsible digital citizens and keep themselves safe online.

The Avondale College Swimming Carnival is taking place on Tuesday 21 February from 9.30am-2.30pm at West Wave Pool in Henderson.

The cost for the day is $5, payable at the Sports Office to Ms Whiu, (along with the signed permission slip). These should have been submitted by now.

Buses will transport participants to the pool from Avondale College at 8.30am. Boys and girls will race in separate events, with championship races being run by age group and non-championship races by year level.

Parents are more than welcome to join us for the day.

SPORTS REPORT

ATHLETICS DAY

Monday 6th February-Sunday 12th February

The senior Term 1 2017 summer sport season began with our boys’ cricket teams over the weekend and volleyball boys and girls mid-week Thursday.

With many other summer sports on offer this term, don’t forget to sign up at the Sports Office. We are looking forward to a fun filled season in sport!!

CRICKET The 1st XI Boys played Macleans College 1st XI. Macleans scored 184/10, Avondale scored 90/10. The 2nd XI Boys played Sacred Heart. Sacred Heart scored 171/9 whilst Avondale scored 101/10. The Year 10 boys got the year off to a great start with a win against Lynfield College, Avondale scored 55/2 whilst Lynfield scored 52/10. The team was admirably led by Lobsang Sherpa who marshalled his players with authority and set a great tone on the field. The aim was to restrict Lynfield to fewer than 100 runs and in the event this proved easily achievable. The opposition were all out for 52, thanks to some serious pace from Ethan Reinecke who took three wickets, and some unplayable spin from Lobsang. Set a comfortable target, Avondale went about their business with confidence and made 55 during the seventh over. Ethan was top scorer with 13 runs. Year 9 Boys lost against Saint Kentigern College. Avondale scored 182/10, St Kents scored 240 all out in 4 overs.

VOLLEYBALL The Senior Boys played two games where they lost to Kelston Boys (20) and won against Waitakere College (2-0). The Senior A Girls had two losses this week losing both games in two sets against Auckland Girls Grammar and Rutherford. Both games were close with sets (25-20, 2517 - Rutherford) (25-18, 25-23 Auckland Girls). The Senior B Girls had a loss against Massey with many new faces and great involvement with international students getting amongst it.

MUSIC GROUPS

MUSIC LESSONS Students at Avondale College are fortunate to have the opportunity to receive tuition in a wide range of instruments, free of charge.

Lessons are held in groups of two to four students, and are available in flute, clarinet, saxophone, oboe, bassoon, trumpet, trombone, French horn, tuba, violin, viola, cello, double bass, popular and jazz guitar, classical guitar, bass guitar, drums, percussion, vocals (singing) and keyboard. There are also a limited number of individual lessons available on piano and students who have already learnt piano may apply for jazz piano.

The teachers are paid by the Ministry of Education, and Avondale College provides sheet music without charge. Avondale College has a number of instruments available for hire at less than commercial rates, but once these are all in use students must hire or buy their own instrument.

To find out more, students should fill out the orange form (available from the Music Department) and deliver the signed form to Mr Stenbo at the Music Department. Once lessons are full, students will have to go on waiting lists.

MUSIC CO-CURRICULAR GROUPS Rehearsals for co-curricular music groups start in Week 3. Students who already play in a music group, or who would like to join one should check out the rehearsal times listed in the Music Department.

Groups include: Symphony Orchestra, String Ensemble, Taikaka Orchestra (all-comers band), Big Band, Jazz Combos, Soul Band, Choir, Vocal Ensemble, Rock Bands.

HEALTH CLINIC

Nurse Heather Playle, Physiotherapist Karen Alderson, Nurse Hannah Normington and Administrator Donna Devlin The Avondale College Health Clinic is staffed by two nurses, a physiotherapist and an administrator. It is located in the Transverse Corridor, opposite the library.

We welcome information from parents about your child's health, even if you are not requesting specific support from our school. The College asks for medical information when you enrol your child, and it is important to let us know if your child's health care needs change, or if a new health condition develops.

Information about allergies, medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes and other health care related issues (including prior conditions such as medical procedures in the last 12 months) should be provided to the school by parents. Please email the nurses (nurses@avcol.school.nz), or phone the Avondale College clinic (09) 820 1718 or (021) 847 949. This will greatly assist our school in planning how best to support your child's health and wellbeing.

Please also remember to notify staff in the school office of any changes to your contact details, or those of the person nominated as an emergency contact.

PHYSIO

We also have a physio in the Health Clinic who is available to students between Monday to Friday 9am-2pm. If your child needs treatment they can make appointments in the Health Clinic waiting room. There is no charge for injury covered by ACC (ACC forms can be completed at the school Health Clinic if not already seen by a doctor). Our Physio can also treat private or non-ACC injuries as well, but there is a charge for this.

Our Physio is also happy to do sports strapping before games, with a $2 charge to cover the cost of tape.

COLLEGE SHOP VACANCY VACANCY: COLLEGE SHOP MANAGER (30 hours per week, term time only) We require a confident, highly motivated and proactive person to manage our College Shop and be responsible for all uniform and stationery sales within the school. Working 30 hours a week, term time only, this is a key role in which you will use your initiative, be highly flexible and organised to effectively manage tasks and deadlines.

TAUREWA CAMP 2017 Year 13, Year 12 and Year 10 students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp.

We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure.

Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to tell their parents early that their camps are coming up this year TERM 1
