B WELCOME TO 2017!

Today our incoming cohort of Year 9 students were welcomed by Principal Mr Lewis, DP in charge of Year 9 Mrs van Etten, and Deans Mr van Beurden and Ms Pattison at a special assembly in the theatre. Students were then directed to their home room classes where they spent the day getting to know each other and orienting themselves around the College with the help of the Prefects assigned to their classes.

We also welcomed back our Year 13 students, and are looking forward to seeing our Year 10s, 11s and 12s at their assemblies tomorrow, as well as our Year 9s at their 9am Powhiri.

JAZZ IN THE DOMAIN Former student and singer/songwriter Arjuna de Simas-Oakes entertained the Anniversary Weekend crowds at the Domain on Sunday afternoon as part of the Auckland Council's Music in the Parks programme. Arjuna was the opening act for jazz professor group DOG, and was joined by Avcol students Joshua Parker and Cullen Erson in performing a selection of original songs.

WHOLE SCHOOL ATHLETICS DAY THURSDAY 9TH FEBRUARY The Avondale College Athletics day is a great day on the school calendar and offers all students a chance to participate. It also doubles as the first part of the Avondale College Athletics Championships. Athletes who throw or jump past the set standard will qualify for the Championship Athletics Day to be held on 23 February, Mt Smart Stadium, Penrose.

All students need to bring a packed lunch, water bottle and sunscreen. Junior students can come to school wearing their PE gear; Years 11 and 12 should wear PE uniform or black and white athletics gear.

Should the day be postponed due to weather, an announcement will be posted on our school website www.avcol.school.nz.

The Avondale College Performing Arts Academy will be starting on Monday 13 Feb (Week 3, Day 1) for students who successfully auditioned and have been accepted into the Academy programme. The initial session starts in the theatre at 7:45am. Students are required to provide a written note for all absences, even after the school has been notified by phone.
